Eh... I guess the original SMB. I haven't played enough SMB2j to judge it.
I played SMB so much and I prefer a challenge so I would say SMB2. Then again I can't say I don't like SMB so I say both. Mario Bros is a classic but it can't compete with SMB.
Classic Super Mario Bros.
SMB and SMB2j are my favortie
But I like MB too.
I like the original the best.
Then SMB USA, then SMB2

I second this
The first one has a special place in my heart. But i think Super Mario gets my vote. They were all great games in there own way.
Honestly Super Mario USA is my favorite Mario game on Famicom. I like the original SMB, but back in the day I grew accustomed to many of the additions in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Game Boy Color, so I prefer that version of it.
I like all of the legit Famicom/NES Super Mario Bros. games. I've played the crap out of the NES trilogy, so I've recently been more into the obscure.
I've got an SMB2J repro, which I picked up a couple of years ago but haven't played a ton of. It's definitely interesting to get my ass kicked in a Mario game again. And speaking of ass-kicking, I've also got the pretty tough SMB3 hack Mario Adventure, and that's very well done from what little I've played of it. I do have one gripe with the game: I don't why they had to screw with Mario's fireball-throwing physics. If I want to off enemies with straight shots, I'll play Mega Man.
I've also got a repro/hack of Super Mario Bros. Special, and that's a really enjoyable game. The game was originally developed by Hudson, which gives it quite a leg up on most of the very amateurish SMB level hacks. It even feels like a Mario/Adventure Island hybrid, which is really neat.
I also have the Mario Bros Arcade game, of course. I get the urge to play it every so often, but I've never been hugely into it. I think the physics are less enjoyable than those of the SMB series. I've been tempted to buy the PAL NES re-release of the game, which I've seen had not just enhanced graphics and restored cut-scenes, but also supposedly has the SMB-style physics.
I prefer "All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros."
IDK...
Super Mario Bros. is pretty classic and I've played it many times before.
I've never played Super Mario Bros. 2 due to lack of having a Famicom Disk System. But it looks fun.
Mario Bros. is fun but the other two games completely blow it out of the water, in quality and entertainment.
Super Mario USA is the best Mario game on the system in my opinion, but it isn't on the list.
Although I like all 3 games. I'd have to say out of the three, I like Super Mario Bros. 1 the most.
Mario Bros. is an okay game. It is an arcade game....great for killing time, but after blowing a few quarters (or spending 10 - 15 minutes), I quickly lose interest and am ready for something else.
With Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2 (J version), there is something interesting going on, for me. I love Super Mario Bros. And I used to think that I loved the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, that is, until I actually took off the training wheels (i.e. Super Mario All Stars remake) and got myself a Famicom port copy of the game. I quickly gave the game a go, here and there, but just could not get into it so much. My biggest problem is that because I know SMB like the back of my hand, I *feel* as though I should know SMB2J the same way...and then I do...well until I whip myself into a pit or a goomba, and have to start from square one. That game is challenging, but mentally I feel as though it shouldn't be (due to my relationship with the original SMB), and hence my problem. I have played (and almost mastered) BAttletoads, and while challenging, it doesn't feel like it should be easy, mentally.
How about "All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros." "Vs. Super Mario Bros." or "Return of Mario Bros." ?
