Is the PAL version of the original Zelda (1) game for the NES somewhat rare or anything? The prices normally are between £15-£25 and I'm fine with these prices if they're the standard reasonable.
I just don't want to overpay for it unnecessarily.
Hopefully someone who knows about this will answer this question as I'm thinking of bidding on one copy of game.
It's definitely not rare but everyone wants it, and NES games are considerably more expensive than Famicom games nowdays. In Sweden it goes for around 50 dollar loose, so those prices seems pretty reasonable to me. Just remember that you can get the Famicom version (cartridge or disk) cheaper.

I really want the PAL Gold Zelda cartridge and even if I were to buy the Famicom it just wouldn't be the same.
I see, then it should be worth it. The non-gold versions are more rare but everyone wants the gold version (I would too if I still had a NES) so it still costs more. Are those prices for loose cart?
That is correct, for the loose Gold cartridges of Zelda they cost between £15+ to £25+.
Super Smash Bros. 64 goes for around the same value and it's only the cartridge.

Wow, I had no idea PAL prices were so crazy on Zelda. The NTSC version of a gold Zelda cart still starts at about $7-8 shipped to US on eBay. I personally have a five-screw gold Zelda CIB.

Yeah, I'm a five-screw variant collector. It's like the video-game equivalent of first-edition book collecting. Since NES games were originally five-screw, and switched to three-screw production in the late '80s, any five-screw version is pretty much assured to be an older pressing. I only need one common five-screw upgrade for my collection (Mighty Bomb Jack).
There's also the four rarer ones that I don't have: Gotcha!, Jaws, Mega Man, and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (There's a few other outrageous ones, but they're for games that I dislike and so have no reason to collect them.) Unfortunately, according to NintendoAge there only seems to be 10-15 known copies of each of those. I'd absolutely love a five-screw Mega Man; it'd probably be the centerpiece of my NES collection. Unfortunately, I don't really have $500 or so to throw at one.
I think they're kinda like the pulse editions of the early famicom games, but without the added visual variation.
There are also some later editions of famicom games that switched to glob tops later in production, I found that interesting as a similar topic.

I do have the 5-screw CastleVania. As far as I know, there isn't a significant difference in value on it.
Most games available in 3- and 5- screws are basically the same price. There are very few variant collectors, and most games available in both variants are fairly common in both variants. If you had a variant collector lined up to buy one, you might get a small premium on a CastleVania or a Zelda. Otherwise, you're typically selling them for the same price.
There's really just the handful of extremely rare ones that are outrageously expensive. I think a Gotcha! five-screw auctioned on NA recently for around $100; the 3-screw is only worth about $2-5, of course.
