Title: Best FDS game?
Post by: Protoman on May 10, 2013, 11:31:06 am
What would you say is the best game for the Famicom Disk System? Excluding those that were on Famicom also, like Super Mario Bros 1, Castlevania, etc. I think it is Ai Senshi Nicol.

Knight Move, maybe?  Good puzzle game with great music.

OK I'm excluding games that also were on cartridge for NES as well (like Zelda II). Ai Senshi Nicol is a good candidate. The music is so great. Super Mario Bros 2 is also good.

Excluding those that weren't exclusive is what I did too. The other candidates I think could be Almana no Kiseki, Egger Land(the other one) and maybe Otocky? I haven't played those actually but they look pretty good at least.

I actually really like All Night Nippon and SMB2J.  Tempted to say Castlevania 2 with all the fixes and tweaks, but I haven't played that yet.  However, that and other FDS exclusives like Doki Doki Panic did come out on NES in various forms so it makes them less exclusives I suppose.  I think I'd stick with SMB2J.

Not discounting ports. etc. then it's Akumajou Dracula all the way for me.

Oh I forgot about Eggerland! That's definitely another candidate. But you mean the rare one (Eggerland Departure to Creation)?

Another candidate: Famicom Tantei Kurabu (both games pretty much). These are very different genres though so it's very hard to decide on a best one.

If I had to choose I'd probably go with SMB2.

I'm also fond of Namida no Soukoban Special, though.

The only true FDS exclusive (not released on FC or NES) I've played is Super Mario 2J, and I've got a US reproduction cart of that.

Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa is a lot of fun. It was an FDS exclusive for about 5 years until it was re-released on FC (which is what I've got).

For something more obscure, which technically complies with the rules offered by the OP, I also enjoy Dr. Chaos. It was only available on FDS and NES. It was actually one of my first 10 NES games, and I've continuously had a copy for more than 20 years.

Why is SMB2J the only true FDS exclusive?  What separates that from say, Almana no Kiseki or Dababa?

It's the only one he has played.

I actually agree that it's Ai Senshi Nicol, and since I have a twin famicom coming in the mail, I just might order it on ebay.

I haven't played a ton of different FDS games, but my favorites are
Vs. Excitebike
and
Arumana no Kiseki

I don't get the deal with Arumana no Kiseki.  Nice music but the core mechanic seems so flawed.  I guess it's a true NES game :)

Basically I played an loved a ton of Bionic Commando, so the core mechanic doesn't seem so flawed to me at all.
It's not as well done, obviouly but it still reminds me of Bionic Commando, and I still thought it was fun.

I forgot to mention Otocky, which is probably even better than the others in it's own way, since it's has alot more to set it apart from other games on the system.
