Title: What's the most you've spent on a game?
Post by: Protoman on June 24, 2016, 08:14:52 PM
Personally I'm not prepared to spend to much on games, my limit has been upped since I got a steady job of course but still not very high.
I also don't chase after CIB games typically so I've been able to keep my costs down.

The most I've spent on a retro game was Youkai Buster: Ruka no Daibouken for Super Famicom(cart only), I paid around 90 US Dollars for it.
I was hesitant but it's rare and no copies would turn up on ebay except for this one with buy-it-now only.
I could see it possible to pay maybe 150$ for a single game if it was Gimmick or something, but that's usually not even nearly enough.

What is the most you've spent on a game? And how could you, so to speak? Did you have money saved up, sitting on a large inheritance, sell a car to afford
it or something?

I believe the most I've spent was $500 on a DKC Competition cart, which I later resold bundled with Star Fox Super Weekend for about the same price as I bought them.

College.

I think mine would be £300 ($500 before the Brexit gutted the exchange rate).  Which is a lot for me.

I bought a Super Street Fighter II X arcade board from a friend, but that also came bundled with some other games.

Totally worth it!  In fact it was a birthday present of sorts from my wife.  Oh, I also bought a brand new Game & Watch for £300 ~ish.

I would definitely like a CIB minty Gimmick! one day, but it's getting a bit hard to justify now, price wise.  I guess they don't depreciate though...

Even though this might not count, but the most I spent on a gaming related items was a Famicom Data Recorder for about US$70. As for software, never spent more than a $40 DS/3DS games. I don't think I would ever spend more than $100, except for just one game....Konami's DoReMiKo with keyboard.

The most I ever spent on one game was $500 for an Asteroids Deluxe machine. ($520 if you count all the new bulbs and a ballast.)  I don't remember where the money came from; I just had a chunk o' change burning a hole in my pocket and happened to find an arcade cabinet in a junk shop.

On a more Famicom-related note, my second place game purchase goes to a CIB copy of Summer Carnival '92 I picked up back in '08 for $475. According to eBay, I haven't seen much of a return on that investment, which is kind of surprising.

I will never spend anywhere near that much on a cartridge ever again. I just couldn't bring myself to do that these days considering how common counterfeits have become, and how good they can be. There was a time when you could buy a copy of Surprise at Dinosaur Peak on eBay and be fairly certain it was real, but that time is long over. The whole retro game market has gotten way too crazy for me. I'm going to stick to $10 Famicom cassettes from now on.  :P

I dropped $550 on my cart of Dinosaur Peak. That was almost 4 years ago, I think.

The most, hmm.  IIRC, around $500 here and there.  Not very often though.

Rare games, of course!  Wouldn't pay that price for commons, lol.  Actually, for those who are wondering, some prototypes easily cost such amounts.

My personal limit for buying individual games is $80, and I don't think I've ever gone over that. I think the most I've spent on a Famicom game was $75 for Mitsume ga Tooru.

$130 on a Punch Out Gold.  Luckily for me I was able to sell some extra stuff I acquired for cheap and free to pay for it.  That's my most prized Famicom possession to date.

$200 for Swordquest: Waterworld for the Atari 2600 back in 1998. I had the money and just wanted to own a rare game! I think I sold it a few months later and got most of my money back.

$110 on an n64 flashcart.

If that doesn't count, I spent $60 on a boxed Taiwanese Super Mario 64.

300 on Gimmick in Box in Japan

There are only a couple games I've spent big money on, but nothing quite like that!

95% of my collection cost 1-5 dollars each at the time of purchase

I did spend several hundred on a brand new copy of MetalStorm - but some Virtual Boy games cost a good chunk more than that even...

I spent a lot on a brand new Game & Watch NIB Octopus.  I mostly collect consoles so that was the most Iíve spent on a single game.

I spent $$$$ on a sealed copy of All Night Nippon Super Mario.

I had gotten burnt out from dealing with (potential) pirate copies so I decided to go all out on a copy that was dual listed on eBay & Yahoo Auctions JP. I saved up, sold a couple other rare games that I wasn't playing, waited for an eBay Bucks sale to get an extra $100 off, and made a deal with the seller. It sits on my shelf while I play a repro instead. I'm proud to own a legit copy now, but embarrassed in regards to how stupid & impulsive I was during my initial hunt.  :-[

Other than dealing with that mess, I threw $550 at a copy of Flintstones Dinosaur Peak a few years back. Got it from Chile, where strangely NA copies are more common than in the US.

About those Flintstones at Dino Peak carts from Chile:  Some were also shipped to Brazil and distributed via Playtronic (IIRC), though with a different back label slapped onto it.

Given the later release of the cart, I think while it did receive low distribution in the USA region, the rest of the stock was just unloaded in South America, making it not nearly as rare as what people initially thought.  It will be interesting to see how many more turn up over the next few years.

For me, the most I spent was about $600, though there are one or two carts I'd be willing to pay $$$$ for.

I believe my most expensive CIB purchase was a minty copy of Gimmick severla years ago on this forum for $650. I still have it thankfully. I have spent upwards of 100 or so on a single game a few times. I really tend to spend a lot less on games these days due to life priorities.  :coin:

The bulk of my high-end spending of 100 per game breaks down to the following:
Various Gamecube demo discs cased.
Game Boy Poko Nyan cart
SNES Burn-in Test Cart
Gamecube Japanese Club Nintendo Zelda Collection
Game Boy Camera Zelda OOT Edition - a few scratches unfortunately though it was $400!
A few others I do not recall right now.

I have spent around 200 or so for various game consoles.
