Title: Let's talk about clone systems with HDMI
Post by: Bebop on July 16, 2017, 06:17:44 pm
What's clone system should you buy?

Hyperkin RetroN 1 HD or Retro-Bit RES+?

I think i go for that one that have best looking picture, and i think the Hyperkin RetroN 1 HD looks way better then Retro-Bit RES+ but is only my personal taste.

Well the Hyperkin also looks fantastic design-wise! So if it has the better picture and sound then it's perfect.

What i got information about is that RetroN HD in ntsc mode plays in 60hz and in pal 50hz and that is what i need, its still little information on RES+

This is a Hamy 8-Bit HD with hdmi but is kinda ugly and it dont play pal only ntsc and no switch for 4:3/16:9

Hyperkin is the clear winner for design, as it's wonderful. I sort of want one for the HD, maybe you could split it into the Classic Edition clone shell, as that would be wicked cool.

Edit- I definitely like it, especially after that review which really made it look quality.

To answer the OP's original question, you should buy none of these, they are garbage.  Instead, save up and get a RetroUSB AVS or Analogue Nt Mini.  Those are the only two HDMI consoles of Nintendo 8-bit hardware worth a damn.
Title: Re: Let's talk about clone systems with HDMI
Post by: L___E___T on July 19, 2017, 02:38:17 am

From watching various reviews I'd also say the AVS is the way to go.  All these other options are a false economy to me, especially the Hyperkin Retron that pretends to play carts.
Title: Re: Let's talk about clone systems with HDMI

AVS is cool because it uses FPGA, so it's accurate in its NES functionality. I also like that they chose to give it the name of the original prototype Nintendo. That was also called the AVS, and the design is similar, right down to the Famicom cartridge port.

Some nitpicking, but it uses FPGA so it could potentially be super accurate (much more than an emulator).
Analogue NT Mini (also FPGA) seems to be much more capable than AVS, and allows ROM loading from SD (supports "over 200 mappers"), but the price tag isn't nice.

Yea sadly the nt mini is super expensive but as they say, you get what your paid for.

I considered the Hyperkin HD, but after seeing a YouTube video on it, I have concluded that it doesn't seem to accurately reproduce the same sound quality as a real NES/Famicom.

I am considering one of those DIY Famicom systems, since it supports VGA and RGB, but I haven't seen anyone really do a good review on it, nor anyone make a shell for it.

I honestly think if you can get one, that a modded Famicom Mini is a really good choice.

Have now order this ;D Super Nintendo/Super Famicom 1:1 Hdmi clone that plays original Snes carts.
Its a switch for NTSC or PAL and you can change the aspect ratio from 4:3/16:9.
From another review they say its works with a Everdrive.

If it can do 4:3 that's a huge plus for me - I'd be interested in finding more out about it, do you have a direct link to buy from?

I really appreciate the link - but it's the same price as a SNES mini, so I passed for now.  Maybe in the future for me, but let us know how it runs!  If it genuinely plays all games, with good picture (i.e. pixels tripled to 720P) then great!

I was surprised how good i felt after o got it, picture looks good(not as god as the snes classic) but good enough for me and the sounds sounds good.

The only bad i think is that its some sort of Input lag in the wireless controller, i am not not sure about it but it felt different when i use the wired controller.
The other thing is that is missing logos and looks naked ;D but i am on to fix that ;D
I am not a pro reviewer but i was really satisfied whit this one.
Next month i am gonna order a Snes2sd and the 8bitdo sn30 and receiver for it ;D
Yea one thing i am gonna order to is this so you dont gonna wear out the micro usb charing port:

How's the picture quality - can you show us some tests?  Also, it says it plays NES, GBC and SEGA games - is that true?  Cart slot looks SNES only...

Thanks for the teardown, brave to take it apart but very nice to see, and very generous of you to take the time!

Lastly - number 5 on the warnings on back of box is pretty chilling right :)

I believe they are talking about the life of the person using the console. Not the console itself. I don't know lol. I know in Canada there are warning to take breaks every 30 minutes or so so as not to damage your eyes or cause arthritis and such...

It does have a separate heat warning about the transformer that seems a bit worrying, but I don't see how this could generate that much heat to be honest.

Found a good review. Actually many of these clone system since early day of retro duo and similar using TCT chipset or similar and this particular system is basically same thing as many other clone system with HDMI. The review is more or less same thing as this console, only difference might be case design and some minor differences component. But overall here is a good comparsion to real SFC:

The picture quality is the same as the Super Retro Trio Plus, sadly i have no screen capture device but record some video later when have time with my phone.
It dont play NES, GBC and SEGA without any converter cart and actually the multi cart that was included are only NES games and with repeats :(

Regular SNES carts play fine and and people say its works with a SD2SNES.

This system have a working switch for pal/ntsc 50/60hz, it also have a switch for 4:3/16:9.

It seems have problem with the wireless controller because sometimes when i press the button its not registrate and i die in the game :( and the wireless controller have noticeable input lag now when i have play on it more, the problem disappear when i play with the wired controller.

It dont feel its get any warm but number 5 was little bit funny :)

I have not a 16 bit hd gamerz tek as in the video in the post over me but i can not hear that the audio on this are as bad as on the gamerz tek.

The housing/shell feels very well built and i like they put in the cartridge lock function even if its useless function and they could have easily skip that.

I like this clone because its the first time i see a 1:1 copy of the sfc/eu snes.
A region switch so i can play imports and a switch for 4:3/16:9 is great to have.

Personally i am very satisfied with it and are gonna play much on it :redcart: :mario: :pow: :star: :help:...even if i have snes clasic mini  ;D ;D ;D

I suppose for the price point and the fact you play SFC cartridges is very very fair enough to say is an OK system. Not the best, but at same time not the most expensive. I am not having HDMI tv as main play tv, but if compare picture quality to just a few year ago, is vastly improved. I am not "purist" when it come to picture/sound quality though. So for the price being, I would say it looks and seem like a fair system overall!

Even though I now own the high end clones and consoles like Super Nt, Mega Sg, Hi-Def NES and a original 1chip Snes I still like to play around with cheap clones.

In the beginning of this thread we talked about the cheap hdmi Nes clones and I am gonna do a follow up and start with the Nes ones.

Its kind a funny after testing the three clones the ugliest and the cheapest one looking Nes clone have the sharpest picture and have in my opinion best colors is the Hamy 8-bit hd and its the only one of these cheap hdmi clones that can be used with the Everdrive N8 but not without some issues.

*Poor sound(no bass).
*Castlevania 2 and 3 sounds horrendous.
*Some games have some minor sound issues(Batman).
*Some games glitch out and freeze in the middle of gameplay(sometimes).
*No Save State function on ED N8(In game saves works fine with no problem)
*And of course no expansion audio.

Why this clone can be used with the Everdrive N8 and not the other two ones is because the RetroN 1 HD and the RES+ have the duty cycles reversed.

A follow up to the SUPER HD SFC GAME snes clone with hdmi.

Have now bought the NES and GB/GBC extension converter so you can play NES and GB/GBC games through the HDMI on this SNES clone and I must say the picture are surprisingly very very sharp, even sharper than the Nes hdmi clones i have post about earlier.

The GB/GBC converter is similar to the Super Game Boy and instead of a Game Boy hardware inside it is lol the GB Boy Colour hardware(the chinese Gameboy Color backlit clone)
Sadly not in Gameboy's correct aspect ratio but at least in 4:3.
Runs good and sharp and sounds good, no black borders on the top and the bottom.

The NES converter runs only in NTSC even though you have a PAL/NTSC switch on the console itself and it's because in this adapter it has a NES-on-a-chip (NOAC) inside that is NTSC.
Sadly the duty cycles are reversed so the mario coin sound sounds distorted and because reversed duty cycles no NES Everdrive works but the Castlevania 2/3 sound sounds ok.

This converter's works on other SNES systems...but sadly not through the built in AV/Hdmi connection from the console so you need to use external AV cables.
Picture through HDMI or the internal video output only works on this SNES clone and on their Retroad 5+ Plus Snes handheld.

It would be interesting if somebody could figure out why you can use this converter's through the HDMI on this clone and no others and maybe the cartridge could be modded and be used on other HDMI Snes consoles?

There is also a Famicom and a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive converter but i think the sound from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive converter did not sound clear so i skipped that one, maybe i am gonna buy the Famicom converter.
