Title: Game addiction affected my vision!!
Post by: Krystalward on July 31, 2017, 03:04:54 am
Hey!! I have been addicted to games since my childhood and I think this has affected my vision. I'm short sighted and I have been using glasses and contact lens for years. I'm fed up of using them.
One of my friends suggested undergoing lasik eye surgery from a clinic in Toronto. I'm just 21 years old and I wonder if it's safe to undergo this procedure at this age. My mom said a healthy diet plan can improve my vision problem. I don't know how effective will be that. I had been eating healthy food for the past few years and I did not see any changes. I need to wear glasses whenever I play games. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable. Any here had difficulty in playing games with glasses?

This is really common, any I wouldn't be so quick to blame it on games (but it can definitely be a factor).

Please go to a specialist optician's for advice - but you should be totally fine to get the surgery at that age.

For years I had 20/20 vision until around 24, but have recently been considering the same sort of procedure.

I've played video games since I was 3, and still have perfect vision. I believe some people are just genetically predestined for fading vision while others aren't.

That's more a fact than a belief - at least when it comes to genetics.  But you can also speed that process up or slow it down depending on lifestyle, and other things will outright fully cause eyesight issues.

I had glasses since I was 10, and can't do almost anything without them because of their strength. Maybe I played too much games, I don't know (it certainly wasn't because I studied too much). I never seriously considered laser surgery or even contact lenses, although I would admit some things would be easier without glasses. I take them off when sparring in karate but other than that, I wear them even during practice. It's surprisingly hard to hear what people say if you can't see their body language, so I need them to even be able to tell what the instructor says.

I have a friend that recently did laser surgery, they say it's very safe to do nowdays. You have to do some test to see so you are not one of those few that shouldn't do surgery for whatever reason. And when you are in the clear you should be able to do it with very little risk.

At first your sight will become worse until your eyes heals from the operation, and you will have to wear sunglasses because of increased light sensitivity during that time.

Of course my friend did the operation in Sweden, so I can't say if all this exactly applies to your country.

I find this topic very peculiar, because though I grew up playing video games, I didn't own a laptop (or portable console), which are nearer to your eyes than watching TV or playing video games. And eventually I needed glasses.

While my younger brother grew up with a computer, laptop, GBA, DS, phone, whatever. Perfect vision. He sits around all day and programs or watches livestreams.

Anyway, I spend so much time outside now, that all I wear are prescription sun glasses. But I've been using an old pair because the prescription is weaker on that than my newer pairs (which give me a headache if I wear them too long). <-- that's another thing. My vision changed over time so now every year the optometrist recommends waiting another year before I get Lasik.

It's not fair. :-\

I've had glasses since I was eight weeks old. I do wonder if spending my whole life in front of screens (first Game Boy at 3) destroyed any chance of me eventually having a less powerful prescription naturally.

I wanted to get some kind of corrective surgery as well (I'm 22) and have been visiting with specialists. Every case is different obviously, so you just need to talk to a specialist yourself. But from the information I've received, if you're nearsighted and your prescription has been stable for a few years at your age, you are probably fine to get LASIK if glasses and contacts bother you. Your dietary habits don't have a large effect on your vision. Some foods possess vitamins that can keep your eyes healthy, but they will not make your vision better.

I wish I were as lucky as you to be nearsighted, because, in this day and age, it is very easy to correct with current technology. However, I am farsighted with an astigmatism in both eyes, so LASIK becomes significantly more complicated. In nearsighted patients, all they do is shave down your cornea to make it even on the surface to correct its distortion. Super quick. In farsighted patients, they have to steepen the cornea by shaving off WAY more of it (very hard to do without risking future eye damage) or replace the lens behind your cornea, which is medically frowned upon at our age because our natural lenses are still perfectly healthy unless you have some other medical condition like glaucoma.

tldr; If you can afford it, schedule a consultation and they'll probably tell you to do it!
