Title: Famicom Dojo
Post by: satoshi_matrix on September 20, 2007, 07:50:08 pm
In case you guys haven't seen it already, there's a very cool Famicom podcast called Famicom Dojo.

Famicom Dojo is an Internet Television show co-produced by Powet.TV and 4colorrebellion.com. It provides a historical take on everyone's favorite system providing facts and comedy on many of the nuances of the Famicom that most of us are all-too-fermillier with, such as buying Disk Games that actually have something unexpected and often undesired on it to the channel 98 RF tuner for US televisions.

Personally I find the series extremely well done. It provides history on little known info as well as a general Famicom 101. So why not check it out and see what you think yourself?

Episode 1: Overview of the 1983 Famicom and the Famicom Disk System

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW0rirNy-qA&mode=related&search=

Episode 2: The Famicom Disk System's Problems and the Nintendo Entertainment System's solutions

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wYu-hUFhR8&mode=related&search=

Episode 3: Viewer response, Grandpappy's (slighty distorted) history of the real Nintendo Entertainment System.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDMJMSolnuI&mode=user&search=

hope you guys enjoy

Thanks, guys!

The other dude in those videos is Sensei, who has been seen around these boards once or twice (I think).

We're gearing up to (finally!) round off the season here.  I hope you will enjoy it.

Anyone have any feedback, comments, or recommendations?  I'm going to be doing up a new mailbag section soon, and have a few good questions already, but more are always welcome!

Episode 5 (http://powet.tv/2008/11/26/famicom-dojo-microphone-roundup/) is live, and it's all about the Famicom microphone.

There's even a nod to Famicom World in the show notes, since I think the thread linked from there is where Vinnk got his list of games for the video.

It all gets a bit confusing with the dojo specials thrown in on Youtube. I'm probably being a bit dense but couldn't you actually number them as episodes? Would help for searching as I cant find episode 4 and I only just managed to stumble on 5  ???
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo

A fine point, and one of the reasons I think the Famicom Dojo website (http://www.famicomdojo.tv) is so useful: http://www.famicomdojo.tv/season.php?id=1&detail=episodes#episodes

I can certainly update the youtube titles of actual episode with their numbering.  I believe we are going to keep the specials outside of the normal flow, however, since their format and subject matter usually vary from the main show (hence "special").

Anyway..

I and my friend sean have just (as of yesterday) finally finished the first season of our show "Famicom Dojo"  the season finale can be viewed here:

Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: SeanOrange on January 07, 2009, 12:54:21 pm
Thanks everyone, for your great support!

We're starting a new Q&A segment called Famicom Denshimail which, along with the specials, should carry us over into the new season.  We will be pulling questions from many sources -- our existing video comments, YouTube communications, and previous emails, and perhaps even questions we come across on message boards (with full credit, of course), but if you want to ask us a question directly you can email us at denshimail@famicomdojo.tv. :D

Season 1 might have been a bit longer than a year, but we got a lot more done than we set out to do.  In addition to the six regular episodes, we had our three-part TGS coverage (http://www.famicomdojo.tv/season.php?id=1&detail=specials#specials) (which not enough people have seen, so feel free to watch it!).  2008 also saw the start of our video netcast, for which we've done all-new (albeit shorter) videos.  We hope to consolidate these efforts starting with Denshimail this year, and continuing with the upcoming Season 2.

Right now we're working on getting the website fully functional.  Please check it out if you haven't already [ http://www.famicomdojo.tv ].  All of our videos are available there in various formats, although absolutely everything is available via the netcast.  Very soon we will add more cool features, including sweet signature images and even a store to help spread the Famicom love and show to others that you are a student of the Dojo.

In the mean time, please contribute by asking us questions, and let all your friends know about the show!  Subscribe to the podcast!  If you really like it, I would like to urge you to write a review on iTunes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=282442598).

We have some plans to actually.  I have some FDS pirate disks and an interview lined up with a guy who used to make them.

However I am really lacking in knowledge on the pirate carts from china/HK/etc.  I only have one (a tetris) and I will need to collect a lot more information.  If any of you guys think you could help, we would be very happy to give you credit as a resource.

Also, my favorite moment in the show's history is the Twin's hidden use...

The second one is about the Disk System Batteries:

Nice job wearing out the Disk Drive.  :P

I really would like to know more about FAMILY BASIC and the Data Recorder. There's still an option in NES Wrecking Crew to load and save, but obviously no tape drive.

The things I must do for science..  That is our tester drive.  We got it last year and have tested hundreds of games with it and it is still (shockingly) on it's first drive belt.  We really need to do an ep. about replacing those suckers.

Yes, only a few hours left!  For those who have been perusing, but didn't buy, I'd forgotten to drop the shipping price on the website to $3 -- if you went to the PayPal link, you'd still get the lower price.

So, yes, essentially free shipping!

"Loved"?  Why the past tense? We're still going strong!

We have lots of Season 2 already: seven installments of  Denshimail, two specials, and 1.5 episodes!

http://www.famicomdojo.tv/season.php?id=2&detail=episodes#episodes

We also totally have plenty of Season 1 DVDs left.  Help us alleviate that problem!  We started a "Recession Special" to help make it easier on everyone. ;)

Indeed!

Yeah, there was a lot of time between the last two Denshimails (almost as much as the fourth and fifth), but we ALSO had Episode 1 between the two of them!  Somehow I'm worried you missed it!:

http://powet.tv/powetblog/2010/05/13/famicom-dojo-what-nintendont/

But yeah, that's still nearly four months between that and the next Denshimail.

I REALLY had good intentions of not having such enormous gaps this season, but real life frequently gets in the way.  This isn't our primary job, so Vinnk and I both have a 9-5 (or more like 9-9 in Vinnk's case) every day.  Plus, he has a cute little kid now, and I just got married this year.  Busy busy busy!

I'm literally working on Episode 2 as we "speak", though.

Awesome! Congratulations on your marriage and Vinnk's baby! So glad to hear such great news about you guys!

No worries I saw that episode too. But I didn't know that it was released in between the last two Denshimail episodes. Sorry, my bad.

Actually, we had a whole Famicom Dojo marathon with some friends a couple of months ago.

And hey! I really want to buy a Season 1 DVD (yeah I know that I can go to the website and click "buy now" blah blah blah, but just wanted to let you know that I really mean it ;D)

Thanks for the hard work and warm greetings from Chile!

Oooh, sale to Chile!  Hopefully PayPal should do all the fun conversions (we don't have international shipping turned on for Amazon because they charge WAY TOO MUCH).

Nice, thank you for the kind words!  "Marathon" has such a good ring to it!  :)  Although it's not much of a marathon since the six regular episodes of Season 1 are only about an hour long... hahaha.

There's definitely a viewing order to the Season 2 stuff, and it's not entirely obvious.  I think I have a YouTube playlist which has everything in "chronological" order...

Let me find it here...

More link dropping!  I can't believe I forgot to mention that a new episode came out a couple of weeks ago, but I'm sure everyone knew that already.

Just in case:
http://powet.tv/powetblog/2010/11/24/famicom-dojo-season-2-angry-pc-engine-nerd/

We have some cameos from the creators of other retro game shows.  Check out their stuff in the show notes.

I would like to release these more regularly for sure.  I think things have settled down enough for Vinnk and me that this will certainly be the case.  Training Exercise is scheduled for next Wednesday.  I HOPE we get the next episode done in January, but please don't hold me to that!

I have to say that I found that very amusing.  Nice job.  Great editing.

The fact that Mexican Waluigi keeps gum in his fridge fills me with an unending feeling of mirth.  Bordering on giddiness.

Well done, sir.  Sirs.  The lot of you.

I have a question: Is it possible for the for the Sega Genesis/32x to play mono 8-Bit PCM samples at 256khz? The 32x could use the PCM chip at high quality, though not nearly as high quality as some of the voice samples in some of the Genesis/32x games. The Sega CD also outputs PCM through the Sega genesis DAC.

Hahaha, Attack of the Show is following us on Twitter.

That's an electronics question, so I'm not really sure.  It sounds like you'd have to cobble something together to even test it out.

Hmm, I wonder if Ben Heck knows...

I hope I'm not breaking any rules, BUT...

Powet.TV is doing their second annual awards show where we ask viewers to vote for their favorite video from the last year, and "What Nintendon't" is one of the nominees!  If you love Famicom Dojo, please vote for us!

As incentive, they'll be giving away a sweet prize pack randomly (RANDOMLY!) to one lucky voter:
-$25 Amazon.com Gift Card
-Famicom Dojo Season 1 DVD
-Choice of a) Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for Wii, or Borderlands for b) Xbox 360 or c) PS3

So that's pretty rad, but the most important thing you can take from this?  Vote for Famicom Dojo!! :D

Definitely would be interesting if you did a segment on Famicom games that use expansion sound. Each game  has a it's own co-processor in it doubling as a memory mapper, which probably did cost each company a whack-ton of money to produce... and Namcot chose to make a golf game. :upsetroll: (seriously, yes they did.)

Here is a complete reference list of all of the games that use sound expansion chips.

I want to do Season 2 DVDs.  In fact, since it's HD this year, I want to do Season 2 Blu-rays.  But I also don't want to leave out anyone who's not HD-capable, so we were thinking about putting both in the same case.

Problem is, that's pretty expensive -- Blu-ray authoring especially.  And Season 2 isn't done yet, but we've released enough content (or will have by June) to have a Season 2.0 and still have more content than the Season 1 disc.

Given all those factors, and the cost, what really needs to happen is that the Season 1 DVD needs to sell MUCH better than it is currently -- both to help cover the cost of a new disc run, but also to prove that the audience is big enough to warrant another disc release.

So if any of you guys would be interested in mounting some kind of campaign to get that going, I'm sure we could help sponsor Famicom World in return.  Is there anyone here I could talk to about that?

As for games with sound expansion, we did sort of cover that in Season 1 Episode 4, but it had more to do with the Disk System (although we mentioned the cart-based ones), and didn't really cover any games besides Zelda.  I actually own a copy of Akumajou Densetsu now, but not any of the Konami games.

The 3D System special has proven to be pretty successful so far, probably in no small part because of the 3DS.  If we could do something like that again, I think that's the direction we'd like to go.

Come to think of it, I never did buy a season 1 dvd despite intending to. What's the cost with shipping to Canada? I'll pick up a copy to help your noble cause.
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: SeanOrange on March 04, 2011, 02:27:14 am
Shipping to Canada is the same as the US.  Well, it's slightly more expensive (SLIGHTLY), but we don't charge any more.

http://www.famicomdojo.tv/store/fdojos1.php

We sadly don't offer international shipping through Amazon, because they completely control shipping charges, and they charge WAY too much, but all orders from the website OR Amazon just go into our system anyway.  Sort of silly, really.

Anyone who has one (or is getting one), feel free to leave a review with them, though!  The more the better. ;)

Ho, hey, we have a sweet new weekly podcast!
http://famicomdojo.tv/podcast

Videos aren't going away, they're just much more difficult to do and take a lot longer, so we figured we'd find a way to release SOMETHING on a consistent schedule.

Speaking of which, we're working on finishing the second part of our Retro 3D special -- if for no other reason than Xious can get his stuff back! ;)

Part two of the 3D Special? It's not done yet, and I don't like promising things before they're done, but we're shooting for this month.

As for the podcast, episodes 2 AND 3 are up now -- with 4 coming this week!

http://famicomdojo.tv/podcast/3

What does everyone think of the Wii U? We're gonna try to record something for it to be released next week.

They might get longer. We're playing with some ideas of additional content.  We don't do our little chat longer than we are now, unless we switch topics.

I'm glad you guys like it!

Also, feel free to avail yourselves of the promo code for the Season 1 DVD. ;)

I'm not sure if it's a new console or a new controller for the existing Wii. Nintendo just did not tell us anything much about it.

Sean and Vink, please made your podcasts a bit longer. I've already listened to your stuff twice and love what you have to say.
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: SeanOrange on June 08, 2011, 12:09:38 pm
It's a new console too ( just look up the promotional photos), which makes sense: it has to be able to render and output 1080p graphics via HDMI and component cable. It also looks like they created their own HD DVD format for games, but will play Wii titles.

We're working on switching up our episode this Friday with some E3 reactions.

Keep up the great work, guys!  I really enjoyed my Season 1 DVD, and I'll definitely pick up a S2 one when it comes out.

Have you guys thought about doing videos on Japanese exclusive titles?  That'd definitely fall under the theme of Dojo, and there's a lot of material to work with.  I was just really sad when Sean said "there's only so much to talk about" regarding the Famicom.  I mean, you could talk about Famicom Basic with all the accessories, the Famicom Modem, the Motorcycle game with the blow-up bike controller, etc. etc.  One of the reasons the Famicom is so great is there's just so much to collect for it.
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: SeanOrange on June 21, 2011, 06:23:01 am
Thanks!

I should probably clarify that if we'd only ever focused on the Famicom, we'd probably be done by now.  It was important to use to expand our scope before we exhausted particular features.

But then the reality is we never put these out at a pace where we actually would have had to worry about it, so... hahaha.

Hoyl carp, it's been weeks since we came around! Sorry about that.

First, we've had our weekly podcast going since May.  There are 11 episodes now (with #12 on the way this week).

http://famicomdojo.tv/podcast

Here are a few of my favorites to get you started, in case you're not listening already. ;)

http://famicomdojo.tv/podcast/2 - OUTATIME: all about the TellTalle Back to the Future game
http://famicomdojo.tv/podcast/5 - Dreamcast Final Days: After the annoucement of the Wii U, we wonder what a new Sega system might have been like, and reminisce about Sega's swan song
http://famicomdojo.tv/podcast/7 - Video Game Movies: Movies interpretation of video game plots -- the good, the bad, and the ugly!

And, the most recent:

http://famicomdojo.tv/podcast/11 - Movies About Video Games: These ones are ABOUT video games, or just heavily-inspired by them

We ARE still working on videos, and will be undergoing a sea change in how we release them in the coming months.  Our first priority is getting out the second part of our Retro 3D special -- which I'm sure Xious will appreciate! ;)

Part of the reason it's taking so long is because we keep finding out new things as we film.  We thought that the Sega Master System and Mark III couldn't use multiple glasses until I took a closer look at the instructions, which prompted a rewrite.  We also found out more recently (quite by accident) that you can play a bunch of these games in 2D mode, even though this feature isn't publicized very well in the games -- probably to increase sales of the glasses.

So, that's my question to you guys!  We found out how to do 2D in a bunch of these, but we're wondering if any of you know about the others.

Here are the ones we haven't found any information for yet:
Maze Hunter 3-D
Missile Defense 3-D
Blade Eagle 3-D

Despite insistence to the contrary, it's pretty clear now that working on the podcast is cutting into our video-making time.  Are you guys okay with that? Are you enjoying the podcast?  Hopefully with the upcoming changes we'll be able to get a steadier stream of both going so it'll no longer be an issue, but these 12 minute long episodes are going to start becoming the exception rather than the rule.

Hey guys.  I figured I should jump in here.  I had an account here before but I figured I'd start a new one with the Vinnk username.

I just want to thank all of you who listen to our podcast and watch the videos.  You guys rock.  And those of you who leave comments for us, well you guys.. double rock.

To tell you the truth I was a little worried when we started this project because we really want to do the Famicom and the retro Japanese gaming scene justice.  I have always considered the people on this forum to be the experts and diehard fans and the fact that we are getting so much positive feedback from you guys makes me feel really great.

Not to say it can't be improved because it still has a long way to go, but the comments you guys leave and the feedback we get really helps a lot.  ANd thanks for sticking with us when the videos take a long time to come out or have some jokes that fall flat.

As long as you still want them we will keep making shows.  Thank you guys and gals for all your support.  It means a lot.

I love your podcasts so very much, but I wish they were longer. I find myself listening to episodes over again every now and then because you bring up such amazing points. My favorite episode you've done so far has been about region lockouts. Vinnk, you DO know there are plenty of mods (both software and hardware based) that will allow the Wii to be region free right? Buying two Wiis so you can play games from different regions is somewhat silly to me.
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo

Yeah, with a the positive reviews Xenoblade is garnering, Joystiq released a guide for soft-modding your US Wii.
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: Vinnk on August 20, 2011, 05:55:00 pm
Yeah, It must seem a bit weird now but I bought both Wiis at launch and this was before the "Twilight mod" was discovered.  Now there is little reason to own two Wiis except to LEGALLY use the other regions Virtual console and WiiWare stuff.
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: satoshi_matrix on August 20, 2011, 08:34:16 pm
This is Famicom World, where Famicom Multicarts are celebrated as gems. Legality issues aren't all that popular around here. There are excellent modchips for the Wii that are dead simple to install now so there's about as much sense as leaving a Wii stock as there is leaving a PS2 stock. As 1337Mhz says, an unmodded PS2 is like a broken system, and the same applies to the Wii.

Vinnk, do you own a PS3? I love the podcast focus on retro, but I'm just curious your perspective on modern gaming. I love the fact that I can get any PS3 game I want, from Europe, Japan or North America. That fact along with tons of great games makes it my console of choice this gen.

Yeah I have a PS3 and in the Region locking podcast we applauded Sony for making the sensible decision to make it region free.  But now with the Vita probably locked to single stores/regions that might be over now too.   :'(

I can't wait to get a few minutes together to watch this.  I just got to watching the season 1 DVD and it is really well done.  The menu's and such are perfect.  I was suprised to hear that you guys got poor reception on the old man bit, that was the best part!
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: SeanOrange on September 08, 2011, 08:05:57 pm
Poor reception is relative -- it was only our third episode, and it was the first time we heard anything negative at all.  Complaint was less about the old man character so much as we didn't give an actual history of Nintendo as a company.  There was very little useful information in that episode, and was all jokes.  As a result, maybe about half of the comments we got were requests to get back to pure information.  People are still hit or miss on liking our sense of humor, but that'll never change. ;)

So glad you liked it!  We worked really hard on that DVD.  It was part of the reason we had that lull back in the summer of 2009.  Kind of like this summer.

Hmm, I wonder what that means...

I  just listened to your Megaman podcast. I enjoyed it as I do all of your podcasts, but man you guys are weaksauce to have not finished NES Megaman 2! It's arguably even easier than Megaman 3.

Here's a few tips.

1. Face Metal Man first, get his Metal Blade and take out nearly everything else with it. It has 52 units of ammo and uses one unit of ammo per three shorts, which means you can fire a total of 156 of those Metal Blades before depleting your supply. And since random ammo drops are frequent, you are unlikely to ever ever run out.

2. Use Air Man's Air Shooter to instantly destroy the big purple Mechs the Sniper Joes have. Then Metal Blade the Joes.

3. Conserve your energy tanks for the Wily stages. All the Wily stage bosses are very easy to defeat with the proper weapon. Dragon: Quick Boomerangs. Block robots: Metal Blades. Guts Dozer: Quick Boomerangs. Wall Sensors: Crash Bombs Wily's Ship: Metal Blades. Wily Alien: Bubble Lead.

On the Wall Sensor boss. The Wall Sensor boss is a series of sensors that fire at you in spurts. They can only be destroyed with the Crash Bombs, of which you can only fire nine of them total. Unfortunately, the wall sensors are also protected by Clash-Walls, which can also only be destroyed with the Crash Bombs. This forces you to only destroy the walls absolutely nessesary. In the bottom right corner, a carefully placed Crash Bomb can take out both Crash-Walls at once. If you are playing it on the NES, when the sensors fire at you, press Start rapidly to pause and unpause. Their bullets will pass through you without causing any damage!  Here's a picture taken from my blog of the boss for you to study where you should lay your nine bombs. Liberal use of item 1 allows you to beat this boss with only seven crash bombs.

Oh and Megaman 1 Guts Man's stage. Really? you guys think the lifts are impossible? It's really just a matter of getting down the timing. It's really no different from circle taps in Ouendan. Still, there's a lot of people who share your pain. Here's an amusing music video about how impossible Megaman 1 is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN-YHyDrCdc
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: SeanOrange on September 11, 2011, 08:35:52 am
Wow, overreaction much?

I have indeed FINISHED Mega Man 2; my point was to illustrate just how challenging it was when I was 8.  For instance, the stage with the eye sensors where you NEED to use the crash bomb: it's not so much about getting hit as it is making sure you conserve your ammo and never miss a shot.  Since you NEED the crash bomb to even defeat that boss, any slip-up means you will not be able to defeat the boss, and you're boned from that point forward -- questionable select/start exploit or no. ;)

So, as much as I'm sure other's might appreciate your complete strategic walkthrough there, I'm not the one who needs it. :P

(I guess I can't speak for Vinnk.)
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: satoshi_matrix on September 11, 2011, 12:13:51 pm
Although I consider Megaman 2 to be really easy now, I can see your point and I totally agree.  Megaman 2 was a very difficult game for me as well, going in cold. There's so much you need to learn to be able to beat it from which bosses to beat first to understanding the auto-scrolling section for the Mecha Dragon in Wily Castle 1 to just the simple fact that those spiked weights in Metal Man's stage can't be destroyed.

In many ways, Megaman 9 and 10 are heavily based on 2 right down to the learning curve you must surmount before you can claim victory. While I wouldn't say that 9 or 10 are easy, they certainly aren't as impossible as many make them out to be.

If you want to get an edge playing those games, I recommend the Mayflash NES/SNES to Wii adapter. You can find them online for around $20 USD. The device plugs into a Wiimote and in turn allows you to plug either an NES or SNES controller into it, allowing them to serve as the Wii's Classic Controller. This is different from other adapters that use the Gamecube standard as Megaman 9 and 10 don't allow for use of the GC controller. Maybe it's cheating, but you can grab your favorite NES turbo controller and go at Megaman 9 or 10 playing them as authentically as possible.

Sean/Vinnk, by any chance have you been checking out my top 100 NES/Famicom games list?  I'm only about half done now, but I'm working on what I aim to be the best online list for NES game recommendations It might be a "too much of a good thing" as you guys so colorfully said, but I'd love to hear your feedback if at all possible.

You can find it at my blog at www.satoshimatrix.wordpress.com.

Do either of you guys have any interest in Famiclones? I bet an episode dedicated to both NES and Famiclones would be a real hit, especially since the're so common now that the patients have expired and Famiclones are for all intents and purposes, gateway drugs to the Famicom.

I never personally owned MM2, and to 8 year old me, it was pretty hard.  I owned MM3 and played it all the time so I guess I just got good at it.

Maybe it would be worth the time to go back to it now.  Last time I played it was more than 20 years ago.

Oh yeah. 2 is easily one of the best games on the NES. The Famicom version is slightly more challenging, but it too is fairly easy.

Hey guys. In episode 20 of the podcast you asked what were some games that you would recommend for learning Japanese. Thinking over what games are good for learning Japanese, I agree with you that the Pocket Monsters games are excellent, but the best game I've found to learn basics of Japanese is a DS game called My Japanese Coach.

My Japanese Coach is an interactive "edutainment" game that has ~200 lessons teaching everything from the various writing systems, phrases, common words, even kanji. You do this by playing "mastery" mini games that range from multiple choice and match the cards and wack a mole with words to more complex games like mill in the missing word or compose a response to a question.

There's more than ten thousand words in the game with a handy English-Japanese dictionary and phrasebook. You can practice your calligraphy with the touchscreen interface, and the game even allows you to use the mic to record and compare your pronunciation to the Japanese voice.

It's not a one shot solution for learning Japanese, but for those studying, it will prove helpful. It's even great for those more advanced as when you start the game up for the first time, the game offers a prior knowledge test to determine what lesson to start the player on.

There's a whole bunch of My ____ Coach DS games, but it seems the Japanese one is a lot more difficult to find than the others. Finding it in the wild is exceptionally difficult, at least where I live. You may have to resort to ebay, which it commonly sells for $40+ used.

If you do pick it up, talk about it on the podcast! I'd love to hear your take on it. The nice thing about it is that as soon as you start it up it assesses your prior Japanese knowledge so the lessons will begin with areas you have trouble with. It's absolutely excellent for learning on your own.

Hey Sean, are you going to be heading up to the Midwest Gaming Classic again this March? My name is Matt, and along with JD Hunter, and some great friends from PCFX, are taking over the museum portion of the show this year. My Twin Fami is going to be in the show, along with some other goodies. I'd really like to meet you and introduce my friends to the Famicom Dojo dude. :D

...also, I just ordered your Season 1 DVD the other day. I am really looking forward to watching it!

Sorry if all that sounded real dopey but I was shocked to hear you were from Madison. I have friends that live there although I reside in Indiana. Moving close to Milwaukee would be a dream just to be close to the show each year. We were there  this year as part of the Turbofest crew. If you attended we were the unlucky ones stuck in the hallway right by one of the entrances. IT WAS COLD!

I haven't been since 2009, thanks to 2010 conflicting with PAX East, and 2011 conflicting with my belated honeymoon. Now I'm going to have a baby who will be around a month old at that time, so I don't know if I'm going to make it!  Hmm...

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to attend MGC since 2009 because it always manages to fall on the same weekends as something else -- paradoxically something else farther away.  In 2010 it was the same weekend as the first PAX East.  In 2011, it was MUCH earlier than usual (if I remember correctly), and fell on the same weekend I was taking a belated honeymoon abroad.

This year?  I thought I was free, but we won't be in the area yet again, although this time it's for something far less glamorous.

SOME DAY I will go again!  I thought this year would be the year, but alas it does not appear to be the case.

[UPDATE] Whoops, spoke too soon.  The thing I'm thinking of is the week AFTER, so... I might be free! :D

That was really interesting. I haven't really explored the Data Recorder at all, so it was nice to see it explained. And then promptly disregarded when you pointed out you can hook the keyboard to a computer and save the levels that way for way more convenience and reliability. I would totally get the keyboard and just save and share my creations as MP3 files if there were more people into it, actively sharing what they've made and playing the levels made by others. A cool, anachronistic mix of old tech and new tech.

It also occurred to me that since the keyboard just acts as a pass-through there (no BASIC cart or anything needed), it might be possible to create a simpler, cheaper, smaller replacement pass-through that just has the audio ports.

There are some other peripherals that can be used instead of the keyboard.  The "S.D. Station" comes to mind.

Also, if you use a computer to do this, use a lossless format instead of MP3.

Oh, neat. That's certainly a lot smaller already. Works fine with AV Famicom as well, I suppose.

Kind of tempting. Wish more than just four games supported it, though...

There's a thread about how Arkanoid II saves/loads its custom stages and whether it is compatible with the Data Recorder.  I was able to use an emulator to capture the save data as an audio file, but I can't get it to load the data back in.  I'm not sure if it used audio or if the Arkanoid II controller had some kind of memory built in.  I don't have the cart or the controller, though, so my research has stopped there.
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: SeanOrange on April 30, 2015, 05:01:20 am
Yeah, lossless is probably best, but we did do a lot of experimentation with MP3s, and found that 128 Kbps files kept the necessary fidelity. We do have the raw WAV files as well, just in case.

This Arkanoid thing is fascinating to me. I'll have to look up the controller, etc.

Lode Runner can also save edited levels. But the save menu only appears if the Keyboard is connected so I'm not sure you can use S.D Station and such devices with that particular title. I also suspect Nuts and Milk can save to tape, but I have no idea how.

That's at least six titles that can save to tape (not counting all versions of Family Basic).

Starting to sound intriguing. If anybody can point me towards a loose S.D. Station, I'll grab that and start testing things. I see a few boxed ones on eBay and YAJ, but I don't want the box and the headphones, they'd just take up space and I'd feel compelled to keep them though I have no use them. My CIB collection habits don't extend to hardware, it seems.
Title: Re: Famicom Dojo
Post by: P on May 01, 2015, 03:02:17 am
Yeah I also usually collect loose hardware or only with manual. Hardware doesn't have as much artwork and such as games do, the manuals are often more practical and boring and the boxes take too much space.

Back to topic, note that Lode Runner probably can't save with S.D Station or Ascii sticks. I think it checks for the Keyboard signature and if it doesn't find it, the save menu just won't appear when you press select (the screen will blink though). But who knows? If you do get it and test it, I would be happy to know for sure.

Checked out Lode Runner (It saves to Data Recorder) and Nuts and Milk (it doesn't).  Working on a follow up video right now.  So I have 5 confirmed games I have personally seen working on original hardware:

Wrecking Crew
Mach Rider
Excitebike
Castle Excellent
Lode Runner

And I also saved a Famicom Basic (V1 I think?) test program on the Data Recorder (for a different video).  Sean has V3 and he will try that.

Anything else I might be missing?

Thank you guys for all your feedback.   You rock!  I'll give you guys a shout out.

If you have Arkanoid II and its controller (the one with an expansion port on it so that you can plugin in a second paddle), you could try plugging the keyboard into it and saving data from the level editor.

I suspect it will use the Data Recorder, but I don't have the hardware to test it.  If you load it up in an emulator and try to save a level, it will sit there for a while and then return.  If you hit load, it will wait indefinitely.  So, it's acting very much like a Data Recorder game.  (I actually got it to save to an audio file in the emulator, but it doesn't seem to want to load it).

Yeah emulators have trouble with Lode Runner too. Sorry I promised to test Arkanoid II but I hadn't time to dig up my Famicom yet after a move, I have no paddle though.

Vinnk how do you know Nuts n Milk doesn't work? Do you have the manual for that game?

The most surefire way to know, would be to check for tape recording routines in the ROM, if you know how they are supposed to look like.

I only see one routine in Nuts & Milk with read/writes to $4016 and it's a standard player-1 controller input routine.  I see no attempts to read D1 from $4016 anywhere.

You can tell what version of BASIC you have by going to BASIC mode (it's printed on screen).
If you are going to mention all flavours of Family Basic, you gotta include Playbox Basic as well. It's an older version that Family Basic is based on. Seems very hard to find though. There's also a keyboard for Sharp C1, but I don't know if it has it's own version of BASIC or if it uses Playbox Basic (both are named My Computer Televi).

Quick update.

I really should write here more often but since I last posted we have about 20 newer videos on the channel.  Most of the are smaller, simpler stuff since we both have infant children running around right now.  But I would love to here what you guys think.

The 2 seasons I didn't post about were the:

and our current (ongoing weekly) series,

Spring Dojo 2107: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9Q0B9ucLxweWsAw6hEeIhSZXP2uifLiS

Many of them are a bit experimental.  Some worked, some didn't but again, I would love to here what you guys think.  And suggestions on where we should go from here.

Thanks in advance.
