Title: Question about the GC > GBA cable
Post by: Protoman on September 04, 2018, 07:44:27 am
I like to play the Gameboy family of games on a TV. For the originals, I have the Super Gameboy. For the GBC and GBA however, the only option is the Gamecube Player. It's not too hard to get ahold of, but the beloved Gamecube controller is not good for 2D games because of the microscopic and painful D-pad. The obvious alternative choice is the HORI pad that looks like a SNES pad. That's all fine, but what is cheaper is IF connecting a GBA to a Gamecube with a cable also makes it work as a controller for the Gameboy Player. Does it?

Short Answer = yup! :bub:

From Wikipedia:

Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance Cable: By plugging it into a GameCube controller port, a GBA or GBA SP can be used as a substitute for a GameCube controller. Wireless Adapter: the GBP fully supports the use of a Wireless Adapter, and will work with all games compatible with the accessory.

Connection the GB Player to a GBA will just display a Game Boy Player logo on the GBA. The awkward Gamecube controller does not work for GBA, GB/GBC games. There i also a homebrew application called the Game Boy Interface. Definitely recommend it over the Game Boy Player. I don't remember if it supports the GBA link cable last I tried.

Yeah Wikipedia may be a bit unclear but you can not use a GBA as a general controller normally (unless the game, GC or GBA, is programmed to do so). And yeah the GBI (https://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=Game_Boy_Interface) (which is a homebrew replacement for the GBA Player boot disc) do support GBA as a general controller. As it's homebrew you need some kind of homebrew launching solution though.

I think the GC and GBA d-pads are both about the same size. But yeah the controller stick is in the main position making the d-pad a bit awkward. Also I think the face buttons A,B, X and Y are awkwardly positioned to play anything non-GC with (a problem that the Hori pad doesn't fix).

Keep in mind I'm only talking about playing GB/GBC/GBA games via GB Player, not GC games.

Yes I think that was quite clear.

I did some googling and now people say it does work with the original GBA Player boot disc and the official GC-GBA cable. You need a Gamecube controller in another port as well though to access the menu.

So it looks like Wikipedia might not be lying after all! I have to try this if it's really true.
