Title: Famiclone audio fixes
Post by: Pemdawg on March 17, 2019, 03:11:37 pm
Has anyone looked into fixes for the distorted sound in some recent NES and Fami-clone systems? So far I have seen tutorials for Famulator and early Retro Duo. I've got a 2017 Retro-Bit RES that has the issue, but it seems that it's audio circuit has been simplified from the 2011 era Retro duo.

Here's the Famulator fix: https://m.imgur.com/w77u99G (https://m.imgur.com/w77u99G)

And the Retro Duo mod: https://www.google.com/amp/s/satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2011/07/19/retro-duo-nes-audio-correction-tutorial/amp/ (https://www.google.com/amp/s/satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2011/07/19/retro-duo-nes-audio-correction-tutorial/amp/)

And my RES circuit:

It's probably a bit different for each system. I will take a look at your photos this week and see if I can come up with any ideas. My schematic drawing is what the circuit for my Retrobit system has, and it also has audio problems.

I seem to have made significant headway on my system, and I'll post a schematic update tonight. I added one resistor and removed a ceramic capacitor. I will look at yours tonight as well and make some suggestions. Do you have soldering equipment?

A resistor to ground ahead of the electrolytic capacitor in most circuits seems to be the missing ingredient in toning down the distorted audio output. This single item seems to be consistent across other fixes. I did also remove what was apparently an unnecessary ceramic cap in the chain.

I have a Super Joy III here, but it might be dead. I will certainly give you instructions on what to use and where to solder to. If I can get my Super Joy working, that will help me narrow down possible solutions.

Could you post some examples of the troubles you're having to YouTube?

Is this the same as yours?

Wow, you're actually missing sound channels! That might not be fixable if the chip is damaged... :-\
Has it always been like that?

Yeah I'd recommend replacement. With the gloptop NOAC in those, if you have audio channels flat out missing, they're not coming back. Sorry, mate.

This appears, based on other videos I have seen, to be a shortcoming of some famiclone a.
Unfortunately there no known remedy, as the glitch is part of how the clone chip is made.

Good news, destroyed the Super Joy III and put it out of its misery and bought a new Famiclone which is the FC Compact or RS-35 as it is known as. It costs only £29 at my local Cash Converters, the triangle sound channel, however, doesn't work but it can be easily fixed here: http://forum.pegasus-gry.com/index.php?topic=7014.0 (polish language.) But that won't interrupt gameplay, I hope it works with the Famicom Disk System?
You are in PAL territory. Is your famiclone PAL or NTSC?
