Title: light gun assistence for pal famiclone
Post by: Vits on August 14, 2019, 11:54:16 am
Hi everyone, I'm new here at Famicom World.

I have a little situation of mine with a PAL region famiclone known as Subor D30 Game System.
You see, I had a spare ntsc power player super joy 3 light gun laying around so I figured I would use that with the Subor. However, when I used it
it simply did not work, so I was disappointed that I could not zap cowboys on my crt tv set. My question is would a PAL light gun work since the system is
a PAL system (I use an NTSC to PAL converter btw). Lastly would a dendy light gun work? Because the dendy ones are pretty cool looking.

Hi Vits! Welcome to Famicom World!

The light gun is region free so I don't think that was the problem. It's probably broken, bad quality or you used it on a modern TV or something. Clone light guns should work, but they may be of bad quality.

The original Famicom light gun works like a double action revolver. It cocks the hammer when pressing the trigger and finally releases it when pressing it further. When pulling the trigger partly, it's registered as a press, and when the hammer is released it's registered as not pressed. Games actually fires at this pressed-to-not-pressed-transition. The Zapper works the same way although it has no hammer. Instead it has a loud spring sound which is the same as the hammer being released. The trigger is read as not pressed after pressing past the spring sound, and remains so until you completely release the trigger and press it again. Your clone gun must also work this way or it might be awkward to play games with it.

One exception is Space Shadow which rapid fires as soon as the trigger is being pressed, and stops firing when released. It's meant to be played with the Hyper Shot light gun which doesn't have this double action hammer/spring thing. For playing other light gun games with a Hyper Shot (or similarly designed clone) you would have to press the trigger and release it again, and the shot will fire off upon the release. That's why it's probably a bit awkward to play Wild Gunman or Duck Hunt with such a gun.

ah ok I see how the technology works now, and very interesting it is. maybey I will build an nes to Atari port adapter to use my real nes zapper with the Subor, it least the zapper from Nintendo is built better.

Thanks! :)
