I don't think we've yet compiled a comprehensive list. Open up the Famicom carts list on FW and do a webpage search for "unlicensed" and "pirated" -- you will find some there. Also HERE (http://www.famicomworld.com/Articles/Buying_Pirated_Carts.htm).

Maybe a 'Pirate original' or 'Hong Kong Original' category could help in classifying those games ;).

Well, I think we have three designations: unlicensed, pirated and hacks. So, you can search the list for those. Unlicensed and pirated a pretty much the same thing because we do not include pirates of licensed games on the list. The difference between unlicensed and pirated, then, would be that unlicensed come from a known company, like Hacker, while pirated come from an unknown company or a shady company like Yoko.

So games ported to famicom from other systems like Super Mario Bros 2j( The disk game) and Lion King , Jungle Book , Alladin ( The Nes games), These are considered pirated or unlicenced ?

"Pirated" if they are reproductions of licensed games. "Unlicensed" if they are original, unlicensed games. "Hacks" if they are licensed games or original, unlicensed games that have been tampered with by a third party. Remember that there are a lot of pirated games that seem like they are originals. Most of the fighters, like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Kart Fighter, Power Rangers, etc., are typically just hacks of an original Street Fighter "port."

Ok. We've got out Mario pirate list. Now I want to more general pirate hacks and originals list. I want to eventually list all of the fighters (SF series, MK series, etc.). Let me know what you know.

Do you mean by Originals/Ports: games that were officialy released for other system but were ported to famicom unofficialy without changing the game ?

I think Jungle book is one of these games
Title: Re: List of unlicensed originals and pirate hacks

Originals are anything not lincensed but not made by a major unlicensed company (so, Hackers, Super Pigs, Mimis, Phoenixs, and Sachens won't count) -- or like you said, they can be ported from 16-bit, etc. And there is a Jungle Book, but it's just a hack of DK Country, so it'll go under hacks.

There's a Harry Potter game for the FC, I've seen it in recent multicarts, but I don't really know if it's a hack of another game or a pirate original (though it looks like a pirate original to me).

Forgot about that...yeah, there are two version of Harry Potter. One's a hack of Magic Carpet. The other is an original platformer.

I have a famicom Jungle book pirate game which is exactly the NES game....the game in which you must collect jems..... and not Donkey Kong Country hack

There should probably be a special list for games that were ported from NES but never officially released for the Famicom. :-\

I'm pretty excited about the update to this list; it's looking more and more complete all the time, one of my goals since I primarily collect unlicensed originals and interesting hacks. I still need to add the Sachens and Hwang Shinwei's titles. Got any info, please contribute.

Nope, Cosmocop is a light gun game and Cosmos Cop is a Space Harrier clone.

I'm missing the title screen hack names and original game names for the Pokemons, like Pokemon Blue, Red, Gray, etc. Anyone know those. I think there are four in the color series.

You are missing, Green. Which in my opinion is the very best Pokemon pirate ever.

Its probably the best pirate I currently own, I would take screen shots if you wanted.

I'd like to know the title screen name -- if any -- and the original game name. I wasn't aware of Green, but I think I've tracked down info on the others. I've also seen multicart labels that say "Pokemon Crystal," but I haven't figured out what game that might be.

Pokemon Crystal is what I have; its a multi-cart. It contains Pokemon Green, Pocket Monster, Boxing and Bruce Lee 2.

Which is odd, because the cart is named Pokemon Crystal; yet it has no game called that... possibly a way to cash in on the Gameboy game of the same title?

The Title Screen simply says "Green" and it has a green Clefable pokemon; its a total hacking of the game "Hello Kitty".

They changed all the sprites to resemble pokemon, the editted the items into rare candies and food and also they changed the little icon into a green Clefable.

In Hello Kitty you play as a Frog, so thats why Clefable is Green. The Clefable Sprite looks ripped right from the Gameboy games and colored multi-tones of green.

I would definitely recommend this game,
as it appears they went all out on designing it, until you reach zone 2;
and notice a bunch of Hello Kitty Charactors, appearing out of nowhere.

Lol. But the game is still loads of fun. Clefable also has a neat editted power in the game, he shoots these odd things out of he body that kill enemy pokemon and on later zones enemy hello kitty charactors.

There is an original unlicensed Pokemon RPG for the nes by Mars... it plays much likely the gameboy color ones, but its all in chinese (yes, not japanese, CHINESE). The Cartridge is extremelly hard 2 find, but it's dumped an available at Romhustler.

When i was a kid saw a game named "Super Maria systers". In fact, it was a grafical hack of super mario bros 3, with title screen and main character sprites changed. Does someone know something about this one? is ti dumped yet?

Should we all be mourning the loss of http://www12.plala.or.jp/ftobira/1patimono%20.htm? Is it gone, down or moved? (This is the Japanese site that listed pics and screens of just about every unlicensed original and noteable hack made for the Famicom.)

Here's one I've never seen before -- it's Bubble Bath Babes, only this one's by C&E and it's called Magic Bubble. Of course, there's also Mermaids in Atlantis, which I don't remember there being a Famicom release, and there's Hacker's Soap Panic. All the same game, basically.

It's very exciting to find a new game -- or at least a game I've never seen before, which rarely happens these days.

I kinda expected this game would exist since there are "Bubble" ads in Decathlon in the high jump event.  There also ads for Soccer and Rolltris in other events.  Soccer has to be Ultimate League Soccer but I have no idea what Rolltris is. Not sure it was even released. When you get the game, can you check if there are the nude cutscenes. I think the C&E version of AV Mahjong don't have them.

Unfortunately someone snagged it before I did, so I won't be owning it anytime soon. But at least we know it's out there now. I've never heard of this Rolltris, so that's cool to know about, too.

BTW: Do you know which came first of the four versions or the general order of them?

You're thinking Panda Prince. And jbholio says that's not a hack.

Not Kunio-Kun/Renegade, Target Renegade, which plays like the original Double Dragon, only worse.

I see the difference, and yes this is the game.
Aha, thank you; I was confused.

I have that game on a multicart. It's called King of Rabits. It has poor controls and overall isn't a very good game, but is interesting nonetheless. I got it from M0rtanius awhile back.

Here's his youtube video of it:

The cart also has a DK port and a cool first-person Battle Tank-like game.

Here's a pic of the cart with King of Rabits on it. The cart ID isVT861.

Koko Adventure -- (Super Mario World hack)

So this is a hack of the FC SMW port? Or just an odd way of saying it's a game that tries to be SMW?

It's not a Mario World hack at all; it's the Korean version of Buzz & Waldog (http://forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?t=1266). Which is admittedly... inspired by SMW, but otherwise has nothing to do with that port.

Hrm. I didn't look over the list in any great detail, but I think a lot of games I sell/sold are still not included on the list. Games such as AvP, WoW/Fantasy Star, Resident Evil, etc. Perhaps a scan of the Buy and Sell would help fill any gaps.

There are few Chinese RPGs on the list because there are a ton and no one seems to know them all so we've just listed none.
Title: Re: List of unlicensed originals, ports and hacks

Shouldn't we just start adding as much as we know to the list? As long as they are confirmed as existing, I don't see why not.

I think we need a separate list for Chinese RPGs. If someone wants to get it started, please do. I've got some game names and IDs for it.

Just noticed this game is missing from the list

San Guo Zhi: Chi Bi Zhi Zhan -- Asder Soft/NTDEC

It's a port of Warriors of Fate on Arcade. Some other company also made a port that looked even worse.

We have it on the FW game list as San Guo Zhi: Qun Xiong Zheng Ba. Is that wrong? Or is that a different game?
Title: Re: List of unlicensed originals, ports and hacks

Different game. Both made by the same company though.

that said, Chi Bi Zhi Zhan is actually in the list already, it's just romanised in Cantonese (as Chik Bik Ji Jin: Saam Gwok Ji)

Ah, I see. Why it became known with it's Cantonese reading is beyond me, just complicates things since all games are in their Mandarin readings normally.

It's not a Super Mario World hack either. It's an original title that just tries to be like Mario. There's an English ROM dumped called Buzz & Waldog, proto of an unreleased localization.

I have to wonder who thought it was a "hack" of SMW :P
Title: Re: List of unlicensed originals, ports and hacks

Looking through that list, I've found a few errors which I don't think anyone else has pointed out. Sonic the Hedgehog is a hack of Somari, not the other way around. If you look through the tiles of both ROMs, you'll find some unused graphical tiles from Somari in StH. Family Kid is a hack of it also, which is made obvious by Mario's appearance whenever you complete an act. Lupin the Third isn't an unlicensed game at all, it's a copyright hacked version of Namco's game. As for Magic Jewelry II, there was also a Magic Jewelry that came before it. If I remember correctly, a company called Nice Code (possibly the most misleading name for any company that has ever existed) developed the games that were on those Bensheng 4-in-1 cartridges, apart from Super Fight I. As well as this, Super Game is missing off that list of game developers.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a hack of Somari,
That has never actually been proven.  The pirates may have not used those tiles in Sonic, and then used them later when they made Somari.  I really think the only way we'll ever know is if we asked the developers...which I doubt any of us will ever do.
Title: Re: List of unlicensed originals, ports and hacks
Post by: Cheetahmen on January 04, 2011, 03:16:39 am
Whatever the case, Family Kid definitely is. The title screen is clearly a modified version of Somari's and because Family were lazy, the signposts at the end of each act are unmodified which show Mario's face. Also, I might be wrong but with Sonic the Hedgehog, the only cartridges that I'm aware of that it was released on either call it Sonic 3D Blast 5 or possibly Sonic 5, the latter of which has a 1999 label on it. Somari came out in 1994, two years before Sonic 3D Blast, and I think Sonic the Hedgehog was distributed by NT. Rather odd that they'd put the name Sonic 3D Blast on something that's clearly a ripoff of the first game, but NT's other cartridge labels are pretty odd to say the least. Another thing to suggest that Sonic came afterwards is that certain objects and enemies which were red in the original game (and are in Somari) are blue in Sonic.

BTW, you're also missing Super Contra 6 off that list of hacks. It's a hack of Contra Force in case you don't know.

i can't find anything about that game.
it seems to be an FC port of the 25th anniversary pc game Street Fighter X Rockman?
https://youtu.be/nCGzGT-PqYw
i have no idea what i am looking at tbh...
that boxart looks halfway between legit and those boxed unlicensed street fighter carts, i really can't tell though.
what suprises me the most is that apparently it is "temporarily sold out", so they sold it at that price???
that is just criminal if this turns out to be a homebrew game or something.
