Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on September 11, 2006, 03:10:56 AM
Which pirate list? The 16-bit? And if so, weren't Aladdin and Lion King 8-bit PAL NES games? I know Lion King was for sure.

Also, I'm sure Sonic the Hedgehog was pirated. I saw the label, cart, and some screenshots on Korean eBay a while back. Just about lost myself when I saw it.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on September 11, 2006, 03:48:48 AM
If you actually read it, you'll not that there's a list of hard-to-come-by pirates and in the following two sentences it explains that they are 16-bit games made 8-bit for play on the Famicom. So, yes we have a 16-bit pirate list and yes we are Famicom World.

If Aladdin and Lion King are 16-bit, let me know. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until someone so generously provides us with a pic of one and some info so it can go on the actual Pirated page.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on September 11, 2006, 04:00:29 AM
Perhaps those should go on the official games lists since they are so different?

Damn awesome. I'll add them tonight.

EDIT: You'll have to see how I did. Unfortunately, many of these unlicensed games go by two to three names. I used the names directly from the list above and put an AKA on some of them. I had trouble with the two games that were released separately by Hacker International and Sachen, putting two separate entries for them even though they're the same game.

If you want to add more pirate originals, this site (http://www12.plala.or.jp/ftobira/1patimono%20.htm) has tons of them.  Not all of the games are originals because some are hacks.  Don't ask me to translate because I don't understand the language  :-X

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on October 16, 2006, 12:07:50 AM
Damn you, jbholio. I just wasted about 2 hours on that website. It's amazing for all the hacks and ports it's got. Plus it's got a nice section on some of the more rare games, including several Bandai gold carts (mostly Dragon Balls) and a Rockman 4 gold cart. They also have a pick of what a Famicom controller test cart looks like. :)

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on November 08, 2006, 09:01:27 PM
Haha. I've never been in the Minus World before because I've alway tried to duck. Good to know that's false info I've been hearing all these years. I'll be excited to test it out without the ducking...maybe I should have smarted up and tried it without ducking before Jedi turned on the lightbulb for me.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread

I don't remember if what I've read said to duck or not, but what you do is jump & then move while in midair.  I like to get on the very edge of the pipe & move in midair earlier & get that extra momentum.</billnye>

11/10/06 -- bunch of new updates. I'm pretty sure FW is the first site to have screenshots from the prize gold disks. They're within the Holy Grail Shrine. Also, check out vealchop's cool animated image link on the right-hand side of the FW homepage. Other updates include two new entries on the Oddities page.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread

About that SMB Minus World trick; apparently in the European version you have to duck.  I have a PAL 3 in 1 & couldn't do the trick.  Then I tried it ducking, & when you hit the wall you kind of bounce before falling.  That's when you stop ducking & you somehow go through the wall.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on December 26, 2006, 03:54:47 PM
That SMB trick is complicated. So, with the Famicom version (cart/disk?), the info on the site is correct?

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: Jedi QuestMaster on December 26, 2006, 05:15:52 PM
Yes, the Famicom/Disk versions work the same as the US.

When was the European version released? It seems like Nintendo unsuccessfully tried fixing it so it wouldn't work.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on January 01, 2007, 04:32:52 PM

You might want to mention in your converter article that the symmetrical vs asymmetrical pin difference is only true for the games on the list.  There are other nes games with asymmetrical pins...  :)  A picture even just ansi art would be helpful:

XXXX  XXXX  XXXX
XXXX  XXXX  XXXX
  XX       XX       XX

XXXX  XXXX  XXXX
XXXX  XXXX  XXXX

:)  Thanks for so many cool updates!  :)

Looks like I'm the only one who sent in stuff in this update...first time ever. :P

That's largely true, but I put up a pirate of my own, and then (forgot to mention it), that ad scan for the Soft Carry cases that featherpluck sent our way.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: Doc on February 17, 2007, 05:06:22 PM
You should put in Microsoft Word, a reminder of what you put up, because I'm not going to know what sections you updated and what sections you didn't. That's why I check the pirate section monthly, because I'll never know which are new and which aren't... :-\

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on February 17, 2007, 05:13:09 PM
Yeah, I should keep a checklist. I'm always adding things here and there, like pics to an article or a "blurb" -- the new word I use for a review-in-progress. The first "blurb" is for Barcode World, and the only link to it is from the carts list. I didn't mention that one either, but it's been up for a while.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on February 26, 2007, 09:23:48 PM
You could. The only thing I noticed about the larger graphic is that it's a bit dark and, because of that, less noticeable than the one we had before. I don't know if that's a good thing. Maybe it should jump out, but maybe if it jumps out, it'd be to distracting.

I put up a quick info piece about the special DK 2 in 1 cart by Sharp: HERE (http://www.famicomworld.com/Blurbs/Donkey_Kong_Two_in_One.htm).

Don't forget that the carts and disks lists not only have info on those pages, but also link to MORE INFO if you click a green button (as opposed to a red one). I need to explain that on the lists pages.

Your pics actually turned out to be pretty good. I was able to work with them without a problem. But the more straight and flat the cart and screenshots are, the better. :) Maybe as important is lighting. The pics shouldn't be too dark or too bright. I was able to adjust some of the darker ones to make them brighter.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: manuel on June 21, 2007, 06:37:34 AM
Their site says "no emulation"...
That's sad, because it's quite limiting the competition. I mean, not really many people have that cart.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: kite200 on June 21, 2007, 04:56:40 PM
but with emus you cant confirm if the person used cheats or not, i think thats why they are doing that. but yeah, its gay

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: manuel on June 21, 2007, 05:19:32 PM
I know that's a problem.
But still it isn't a real competition with only some people participating.

The repro guy must make some more! Some 100 more. ;)

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: JC on June 21, 2007, 11:10:36 PM
Yeah, kite's right. If we could figure out a way to do emulation without the two problems associated with it, then we would. Problem One is that most ROMs, if not all, don't have the proper internal timer for emulation to be fair; and Problem Two is that some peeps will cheat using Photoshop, which is much harder to detect in emulated images as opposed to digital camera pics.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: UglyJoe on June 22, 2007, 10:33:14 AM

Why not photoshop, output your display to a TV, and then snap a picture?

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread

I wanted to say the same as UglyJoe.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: MaxXimus on May 30, 2008, 04:30:33 PM
When organising the lists by filtering out all games but pirates and such, there were 2 instances of Pandamar. I didn't bother to check if there were 2 instances without filters, but it's worth a check anyways.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: UglyJoe on May 30, 2008, 04:43:10 PM
Pandamar is listed as a Pirate cart and also as a Hack of SMB.  So, one link is for the Pirate and the other is for SMB (which mentions Pandamar as a Hack).

It probably shouldn't be listed as a Pirate.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: MaxXimus on May 30, 2008, 04:47:25 PM
Ahh. That makes sence. It still seems to be a little weird though, as you stated. Maybe it should be removed as a pirate? Is it even available as a deticated cart, or is it only found on multis?

Just FYI...I've gone through most of the site and corrected broken links, missing images, etc. I like to check in with FW's linked websites every once in a while. There were a few sites that have gone down since I last checked, so I've updated that page to remove their links. I was especially sad to see Argentina's 8-bit site mostly gone. The message from that site: "We're fucking sorry. We're closed for now." :D Maybe they'll be back up sometime.

Hey!  The font just changed, and the checkerboard background changed a little, too...and the images all got a little blurrier.

Mine used to have a slightly different font, and the background wasn't segmented.  I kind of like the new font, but the background is weird this way.

We'll be changing servers in the next couple of days.  The forum will experience a short period of downtime (about 15 minutes) sometime during the move.  I'll let you all know when the move has been made.

Okay, seriously this time, we'll be changing servers tonight or tomorrow.  There will likely be a short period of forum downtime (hopefully less than 15 minutes).  I'll post here when the move has been completed.

All in good time, famiac. Thanks for catching that the new site was up. UglyJoe and I were wondering how long it would take for someone to notice.

If anyone finds any bugs, let us know here and we'll get them fixed. UglyJoe worked hard to make sure everything's running smoothly and I think he's accomplished that.

Doc decided to step down as co-webmaster as he has been largely inactive for so long.  He'll still be around, though, so there's no need for goodbye's.  He also asked for little to no fanfare regarding his decision, so please don't make a big deal out of it.

Lookin' great!

Small spelling error on your Handy Famieight page.

Quote
It seems most, if not all, Famicom games work with the Handy FamiEight. The image quality is a bit blurry though. Also, the simple fact that the GBA screen is not as large as the original Famicomís (FC 256◊240 vs. GBA 240◊160) means that the image is squashed to fit. This makes reading test and viewing small sprites near impossible and can distort some sprites, which should be expected. It doesnít really effect gameplay, just something of which to be aware.

Because BMP files are huge and uncompressed.  Use a PNG instead (or a JPG if it's not pixel art).

I don't have the newest technology, and still in 2009 do my computing with an 800x600 screen. With your new homepage, which is otherwise awesome, It cuts off a little. I have tried IE, Firefox, and Opera. Any possible way you guys could like, look into this?

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: UglyJoe on November 02, 2009, 11:58:17 PM
It was designed for 1024x768 or greater, so we're aware that it cuts off at 800x600.  There's not much I can do about it.  Even if I made the left column shrink at lower resolutions, any images that are in the column would not shrink along with it (and would end up overlapping the right column).

I'll look into fixing the nav bar, since I wasn't aware that it got pushed off the left side of the screen like that.  If your browser supports zooming, you could zoom out a few levels (although, running at 800x600, I'm assuming you're hard-of-sight, which makes this a non-option for you).

 :-\

update: the nav bar should display properly now in all browsers at 800x600.

update2: it may be more feasible than I previously thought.  I'll let you know in a couple of days if I can come up with something.

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: PatMan33 on November 10, 2009, 12:20:37 PM
Just a commentary...

This section of the site (http://famicomworld.com/fw/) that explains the history and whatnot of Famicom World is very close to being a little too self-serving and tacky. I dunno, it's just kind of weird to see a bunch of people talking about themselves and what they did, in that manner. Not many people outside of that specific group would really care or even know what you're talking about so why dedicate so much space (I know it really isn't that much space) to something that you can explain more meaningfully in a single paragraph?

The detailed history and your personal tales are something you could put on the forum for interested parties to peruse at their leisure. Your front end should be reserved for something more professional-sounding. Do a quick blurb about the founder, give your mission statement, extend a welcome to anyone that wishes to join, and leave it at that. What you have now almost seems to smack in the face of all of the effort you guys have gone through to make the site more legitimate.

FamicomJL/Doc wrote that a long time ago, it's just been a little updated here and there. Don't know how I feel about it, but because he always wanted it on the site, I left it in place (yes, it was on the former site too.). No doubt it could use some work.

Hey guys, what happened to the Famicom AV mod? It was located here: http://famicomworld.com/Workshop/AV_Mod.htm But now it is gone.

I assume it was just lost in the moving to the new site(looks nice btw!) or did you decide that you didn't want it anymore?

I'm not very active here(never even posted on the boards) but that page has a small place in my heart and I would love to see it back :-)

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: masaruh on November 10, 2009, 07:28:11 PM
I'll probably use the info in it for a mod soon. I could take some new pictures of the process if I'm successful and give them to you if you would like? If my memories serve me right those old pics were a bit... fuzzy and small(hardly unviewable though) :-)

If you would like of course, otherwise I'll keep my eyes open for your improvements on it.

I knew a girl in grade school who was sitting in class one day when her arm started itching like crazy. She was scratching it, then she started screaming and screaming, and everybody looked at her and saw that there were dozens if not hundreds of baby spiders coming out of her freaking arm. I kid you not. Apparently some spiders lay their eggs under skin.

Terrifying.

Yeah, they went and banned pretty much every website that's even remotely affiliated with video games.  I can still read the forums via the RSS feed, but I can't post or moderate.

Join their mailing list. New proxies roll in irregularly.  Used to be a new proxy site made every day, but they've slowed down.

Yeah, using a proxy at work would be a good way to earn a pink slip.

We've added a Feedback forum under the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.  This takes the place of the old Feedback thread.  Each user now gets their own feedback thread in the Feedback forum.  The link to a member's feedback thread (or a link to create one if the user has no feedback) can be found in their profile.

Nice idea, must have been lots of work though. At least now it's easier to figure out someone's feedback.

Didn't there used to be a favicon for FW? I don't see one anymore.

There always has been a favicon.  I just added more code to make it (hopefully) standards compliant, so try it again.

It's still missing in Firefox. I closed Firefox and tried a hard refresh, but it's still missing. The favicon DOES show up fine in Chrome and IE, just not Firefox.

It could be because I'm using an older version of FF. I'd update it, but there are some add-ons that I use that aren't compatible with the new version yet.

You could try starting Firefox in safe mode, which disables all your extensions, and see if one of them is possibly causing the problem.  Do favicons work on other sites?

Also could try this:
Quote
Type about:config in the address bar and do a search for "icons". Change "browser.chrome.favicons" and "browser.chrome.site_icons" to true/

As I'm sure you'll notice, I've added another board titled: Technical & Repair Assistance.  Since the old "Technical & Repair Assistance" thread has grown unruly, a new board has been created to handle technical and repair questions.  Basically, anything that would have gone into the old uber-thread should now go in this board.

With any luck, a few choice answers to common questions can get stickied so that the technical members of the board don't have to spend their time answering the same things over and over again.  Speaking of which, I'd like to thank the aforementioned members for being so generous with their time and responding to technical questions.

A new site article has been posted: Famicom FM (http://famicomworld.com/workshop/articles/famicom-fm/)

Some of you might remember this from one of 133MHz's forum posts (http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=4410.msg72207).  I thought it was an interesting thread and decided to convert it into a site article (with his permission).  This is something I'm considering doing with some other threads, so if there are any interesting threads on the forum that you think could make a good site article, please let me know.

Ha nice, I haven't seen this one before, I'll probably use this to make fun of someone - with this "famicom FM station" :D
Great idea to put it on the main page! (By the way - very nicely done pictures for the article!)

I am a bit confused about HL article:
-never got any music glitch.
-no buggy sprites.
-what's so buggy about this game?
-Aren't the controlls allright?

It's like you are comparing this game to SMB3...

Looks like we have another Week of Garfield issue (http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=123.0).

But doesn't Uninvited have the actual game? Otherwise, how would you have gotten those screenshots? ::)

Title: Re: Site Updates Thread
Post by: NintendoKing on November 28, 2011, 02:32:26 AM
I do have the actual game on cartridge, there are two versions of HL:
One with a level select, repaired audio and such but my copy is presumably a earlier build as it has a slightly different title screen then most copies on cart(the one pictured in the review) and is much more messy looking programwise but still quite fun.

Edit- I also just bought a copy of the level select version of HL from Jordanloko the other day, hopefully it arrives soon so I can compare the two.

I'm spending 2012 scanning and uploading my entire Famicom collection to FW, with a focus on my pirates since it's hardest to find pics of those online. Here are the first 17:

Boogerman (http://famicomworld.com/game/125/)

nice reviews!
Boogerman (http://famicomworld.com/game/125/)
Harry's Legend (http://famicomworld.com/game/438/)
i have these 2 carts. And "Boogerman" features 16-bit Sega quality (of cource, Sega Mega Drive!), so why did you compare it with snes version but not smd?

also, i can make some more pictures, if you need.

by the way, do you know that there are to different versions of boogerman? one comes from "Super Game", another from "Rex Soft" and called "Boogerman II"

I got an email from Dreamhost today stating:

Quote
Your site will be migrated into our newest data center (located in the US - East Region, in Ashburn, Virginia) within about a week starting from November 29th. During the move you should not experience ANY interruption in service with one exception! If you have third party DNS (your domain does not point to our nameservers) or other services that connect to your domain via the IP address, you will need to update those outside records to match ours.

I'm not using a third party DNS and I'm almost positive that I don't have the site's IP address hardcoded anywhere.  However, Dreamhost has a knack for messing up things like this, so expect some outages next week.

JoeStar alerted me to this NA thread:
