I have some books about Famicom and thought I'd show them to you guys here. :)
I'll start with "Family Computer 1983-1994"
They have it on play-asia.com (http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-32hv-71-lu-77-3-49-en-15-family+computer-84-j-70-ine.html)
It features photographs of all 1252 Famicom games ever produced. Indeed very nice.
(http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/9166/nf007rt0.th.jpg) (http://img239.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nf007rt0.jpg)
It has interviews with famous game creators like Shigeru Miyamoto. Text is in Japanese and English by the way...
(http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8499/nf008uc5.th.jpg) (http://img207.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nf008uc5.jpg)
Some pics show other consoles.
(http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/4162/nf009cy6.th.jpg) (http://img176.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nf009cy6.jpg)
That's really a very nice book. I read in it and look at the photos nearly every day. ;D
What do you think?
That's really cool and would be really handy for getting information for the site. :o I've seen on like that before. Do you know if there are more Famicom history books in English?
This is the only one in English I know... all the others are Japanese only.
I can really recommend that book.
When you click on the play-asia link in my first post, you can order it there.
I still have another book, which features games with screenshots, publisher, release date info and such. I will post that another time.
The above book is the only book with English aswell. I'm currently bidding on one on eBay as we speak (No one leak the URL please..!). It looks just so damn awesome.
There's also a cool Famicom book from 1984 that I'm bidding on, with as up to date as they could get. I'm bidding on it aswell.
DAMN you! It's mine!
As long as it's my computer chair and my hands can reach the keyboard. :D
Haha, good luck bidding.
There are some on ebay for BIN, so you wouldn't have to fight. ;)
Those are expensive and from the U.K., by the time it ships out to my home I'll retire teaching.
Now that you say it... all in the UK.
Then good luck with the auction.
You're teaching? Where? What?
U.S. History for 11th Graders.
If I lose the other auction, I'll be a little annoyed, but I'm hoping Kris reserves one for me next time he finds it.
MUST HAVE BOOK NOW
I think im gonna order that book in the next week.
Hey, manuel. If at any point you want to document any of your Famicom possessions for the FW site, we'd love to have them. You seem to take great pics! I can't wait to get my hands on that book!
Does the book include only general releases or does it feature rarities and weirdness?

I think it includes all.
I've seen that book before but I assumed it would be all Japanese. Now I know it's also in English I defintely want one!
I also thought it was only Japanese and was a bit surprised when it arrived.
It's definitely worth the money. At least for a collector. ;)
Not $31+ though...There's another only Japanese book on their that I'm winning, at least.
I have that book. I paid 40 bucks for it like two years ago. I would snatch this up if you could, there's not that many out there as it was made to go along with an exhibit at a photography museum in Japan at the time. The interviews in there are really great and cover a lot of topics, the back has a bunch of accessories for the famicom but theyre not photographed or labeled as good as the rest of the book. The one on ebay might be missing the blue 2nd dust jacket that came with mine though.
There another book that covers all the games as well thats totally in japanese but has screenshots from the games as well. The cover is designed like a famicom. I think these are easier to find but are a lot more money for some reason.
Yeah, I was wondering on accessory coverage in that book. Thanks on that!
I STILL might bid on it...but I'll only go has high as $35...
If you're interested in Nintendo history, Steven Kent's "Game Over" is a fantastic book that covers the entire history of Nintendo and even touches on some other systems. Chock full of info, here's a link:
http://www.amazon.com/Game-Over-Press-Start-/dp/0966961706/sr=8-1/qid=1156875754/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6792493-2862337?ie=UTF8
Yeah, I've been watching one of those on eBay for awhile. Does it have info on the Famicom?
Yeah it focuses primarily on the company itself which is japanese, but does a great job covering both when the company opened up an american branch. If you're a fan of nintendo/famicom its a MUST read.
Alright, I'll look for it. :)
"Game Over" is surely worth the money. Get it, it's a nice read.
Yesterday I took photos of two other Famicom books I have. I still have to resize those and up them to imageshack. Then I'll post them here. ;D
Alright, looking forward! Are they both Japanese only?
Japanese only. :-\
Later.
Power Up: How Japanese Video Games Changed The World
You can pick that up at Books A Million/B&N or Gamestop.
Alright, now THAT'S the book I'd like to have. :)
Power Up is good. Get it soon.
And here's another Japanese book on Famicom, as promised some posts above. ;D
The title is "Fami Emulator Kanzen (=Perfect) Guide 2004". I bought it back then when I studied at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. I was so happy when I saw that book in the store. It really made my day. :D
(http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/7231/famiemu01up5.th.jpg) (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=famiemu01up5.jpg)(http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/8691/famiemu02mu6.th.jpg) (http://img479.imageshack.us/my.php?image=famiemu02mu6.jpg)
The book comes with a CD. The CD contains some emulators (e.g. VirtuaNES version 0.92, NNNesterJ 0.23, FCE Ultra v0.98.9 and some more), some free roms (no official FC releases of course) and 5 minutes of video footage of the Classic Gaming Expo 2005. I could post the free roms somewhere if some people are interested.
Let's get to the most important part: The games. It contains release info and short reviews of "over 1200" games, they don't specify the exact number and I surely won't count them. ;)
(http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/6574/famiemu03ph9.th.jpg) (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=famiemu03ph9.jpg)(http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/3813/famiemu04ek5.th.jpg) (http://img386.imageshack.us/my.php?image=famiemu04ek5.jpg)
(http://img318.imageshack.us/img318/6406/famiemu05mg2.th.jpg) (http://img318.imageshack.us/my.php?image=famiemu05mg2.jpg)
6 pages to get you an idea on how the book looks. The bigger titles get a whole page, the less important ones get only a few square inches. They all have info like release date, producer and release price.
(http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/6306/famiemu06pc8.th.jpg) (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=famiemu06pc8.jpg)
A short article on Famiclones. Nice read.
(http://img318.imageshack.us/img318/10/famiemu07on4.th.jpg) (http://img318.imageshack.us/my.php?image=famiemu07on4.jpg)
And a special on video game ads (4 pages). That7s nice, too.
Another some pages are dedicated to the Classic Gaming Expo 2003.
The price was a cheap 1200Yen (10$). 8)
So. What do you think about that?
Please stay tuned for yet another one to come soon. ;D
edit: I made a rar file out of the freeroms folder on the CD. It contains some free roms (some of which you might already know) and is 1.16mb.
http://manuel.web.fc2.com/stuff/fcfr.rar
Awesome shots!
However, I get this when I click on that...:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /stuff/fcfr.rar on this server.
That's weird... I tried to download it and there were no problems...
I'll try to put the link on an html file. Perhaps the provider doesn't allow direct linking. ???
http://manuel.web.fc2.com/fcfr.htm
Go there and right-click the link for "save target as...".
Still doesn't work. It says it's "damaged" here...
I have no trouble with the images.

That's VERY weird. I downloaded it and could also extract it.
I checked again now and the file was erased from the server. I don't remember the TOS, but maybe rar files were prohibited there.
Next attempt: megaupload

Hell...I didn't notice your edit, manuel. I can't get that file either. And that new link doesn't seem to go anywhere useful. I don't know if I should click "Marijuana Alernative" or "Watch My Web Cams" -- lol.
EDIT: Found it. But .rar. I hate those...
This time the link works. Thanks. :)
Next book up is "Kyuukyoku Fami" (kyuukyoku meaning "extreme" or "ultimate").
It's similar to the book I showed before.
1246 games are shown with screenshots (3 per game), release info and a short review. All in Japanese only. The book also comes with a CD, which has emulators and some free roms on it.
What's different with this one is that it has a "Fami-Column" every some pages. Those are very interesting and go from Famicom rumours, showing of accessories, explanation of bugs or hidden messages inside game codes. Very nice. Last but not least it has a 8page "Famicom History".
I bought that book last year in August when I was in Japan. It only cost 1300 Yen. ;D And it's worth it.
Some pics so that you know what I talk about.
The cover and the CD inside:

So what do you think? Would those books interest you although they're in Japanese only?
I have more books on videogames in general (not only Famicom). How would you guys be interested in photos of these? If you're not interested I'm not going to take photos in the first place. ;)
But if you would like to see more, I'd be glad to come up with more. Let me know. :)
"explanation of bugs or hidden messages inside game codes"
-man I'm really interested in some of those. Can you translate it?
Can you post up pics of the "Fami-Column" pages?
How bout a link for that CD-Rom too?
Actually, I'd like to see those translations aswell. :)
When I find the time I'll pick some interesting columns and translate them.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UM7T82RO
This is the link to the roms on this CD. The file is a bit over 300kb and it's a zip this time. ;)
edit: Wait a few minutes. I'll try to take a shot of one column with my digicam.
edit2: Took the pics. It's night already and the lighting wasn't perfect, but I could take somehow readable photos of one of the Fami-Columns.
I won't do a word-for-word translation, but give you the gist of it.
"A wondrous message hidden in a game"
The text says that in the code of the game "Ganso Saiyuuki Super Monkey Daibouken" a message from a designer of the game is hidden. You can find it using VirtualNES. You must load the rom, click on Tools>Viwer>Pattern Viewer and there you can find it.
A shot of the screen is there, but they blacked out the designer's name and a bit more "unappropriate wording" (according to text). :P
Here's the translation of the screenshot: (XYZ stands for blacked out parts) Text is in the upper part, yellow on red.
"Designer XYZ, born 1960 in Toyokawa-City in Aichi prefecture, 26 years old. (The game's from '86)
XYZ XYZ ... I want a girl who has sex with me. XYZ, XYZ, I love you! I love you!"
Here's the screenshot and below is the column itsself.
(http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/7045/nazo1pt7.th.jpg) (http://img176.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nazo1pt7.jpg) (http://img419.imageshack.us/img419/3541/nazo2do5.th.jpg) (http://img419.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nazo2do5.jpg)
If anybody wants to know the designer's and/or the girl's name, please send me a screenshot from the actual rom, without blacked out letters. I don't have the Super Monkey ROM, so I can't do it myself. If anybody has, feel free to post.
awesome! I'm gonna see if I can do it tonight. was there anymore hidden messages featured in the book?
I'll look through the book later. :)
""Designer XYZ, born 1960 in Toyokawa-City in Aichi prefecture, 26 years old. (The game's from '86)
XYZ XYZ ... I want a girl who has sex with me. XYZ, XYZ, I love you! I love you!""
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAA, whoa! That's CREEPY...
Oh that's too cool. I'll have to add it to the site!
Glad you like it. ;D
Here's a screen capture I blew up of the hidden message, can anyone read his name?? hahahaha!
Whoa, looks awesome! I see the 1960 and the 26, lol.
Manuel better hurry up and give us a full translation of this!!!
It's so neat. :D
Nakajima Kaoru, who's that? And then something about a pussy with the wanna have sex and he's horny stuff. He really seems to wanna get it on with Chitsu-chan and Kuri-chan.
featherpluckinfilm was faster than me. ;)
Now then, word for word...
"Designer Nakajima Kaoru, born 1960 in Toyokawa-City in Aichi prefecture, 26 years old.
I want to lick a pussy (not cat... ;) ) I want a girl who has sex with me. Chitsu, Kuri, (girls' names) I love you! I love you!"
:P
Well, that's certainly....*ahem* weird...
I've never heard of this in U.S. games, lol.
hahaha! oh man what a creep! Manuel if theres any more of these hidden messages in that book let me know and I'll find em with VirtualNES and post em up here!
That's so funny. I wonder how that was discovered -- by a leak from someone who knew the designer or just some random Japanese gamer with a VirtualNES. So funny. I'll be posting it on FW sometime today, I think.
Give credit to featherpluckin and manuel though. :)
Time to revive that old thread.
There's another fine Famicom book, the "Fami-Complete".
Have a look at the old thread over at nesfiles forums for photos:

I want that book, but still have to find it for cheap. (Yeah, I'm a cheap-ass... ;))
That's a nice hidden message nice way to waste extra data
Do you mean the hidden data stuff some posts above?
Well, that wasn't wasted data... they probably had a surplus of storage, so the design guy put that in. ;D

ahh well at least it was something interesting I bet those girls were hot!! hmm japanese girls ahhh yesss lol anyways hope people find more interesting hidden stuff.
I'm sure there's lots of hidden messages in the roms out there.
It's just a pain in the a** to crawl through the the loads graphics of games.

A little update for the people who remember.
I read that column again and then it came to me. The two "names" Chitsu and Kuri aren't names. :-[
chitsu means "vagina" and kuri is "clitoris" (kuritorisu). Just for the sake of correctness. ::)
Hahaha. :D OMG. I'll have to fix that on the site. What a dirty dude.
I wonder where he is working now...
It sure would be cool to ask him about it in an interview. :D
LOL! That is hilarious! What a pervy dude! :D

Wow, sounds like a ripoff. You can get them from amazon.co.jp for about $12 plus shipping.
Yes, they only cost around 1260Yen each.
Good God! :o
Even Chitsu and Kuri not being "real" names, the designer
treat them like they were! "Chitsu-chan", "Kuri-chan"!
Very cool! :D

I'm a lucky owner of a Fami-complete!
For me it's the
Famicom Bible.
The ultimate Famicom book!
Fami-Complete is indeed awesome, and I'm glad I picked one up, but if you can get the commemorative book from the Metropolitan Museum exhibition that Manuel mentions in the first post on page one then do it ... in my opinion it's a better book (but I love both!)
Oh yeah!
There are two different approaches, also!
Each book representing one of them!
They're complementary for me!
1) Fami-complete is the definitive FC/FCD Catalog.
2) The Metropolitan Museum Book has fascinating
interviews with the men that made history in the
video game scene!
I do agree with you, Joppers!
In terms of substance the Museum book is a killer!
I'm still looking for it!
Whoa, I had never heard of Fami-Complete. Looks awesome.
I have the Metropolitan Museum Book and it's great. The Engrish in the review portions can be hilarious!
The Miyamoto sayings there in the Museum book are great
guidelines to be a good video game developer/designer.
I think that all the guys at the video game producing business
should read that again and again.
If one of you lucky guys that have this book would transcribe
the Miyamoto interview, it would surely make a great article
for the famicomworld.com! ;D
There's a new book out, called "Our beloved Famicom" and I'm discussing with myself whether it's worth the rather steep 1800 Yen or not...

Is there an English translation in it?
I'm quite sure there's not.
