Title: Want to know how to dump and write FDS disks?
Post by: JC on August 18, 2008, 09:47:11 pm
Want to know how to dump and write FDS disks?
The top donor gets two free Famicom cartridges

133MHz has said he will teach all of us how to dump and write our own disks, offering a detailed tutorial in simple terms. But he needs our help! He needs an FDS, shipped to Santiago. If we can raise enough money, we can get him what he needs: a 7201 FDS, RAM adaptor, AC adaptor and disks.

This is an awesome project for Famicom World. Though there is information on the web about the FDSLoader and how to write disks, let's face it, few of us understand that crap. So, if we can collect enough money, we can start, as ericj said, "a network of trading & re-writing disks" at FW. 133MHz can provide us with invaluable information.

Here's the breakdown:

Working 7201 FDS = $20
RAM adaptor = $5
AC adaptor = $5
10 disks = $10
Shipping from Japan = $90 (EMS); $71 (SAL); $36 (Surface)

Total = $125 (EMS); $106 (SAL); $71 (Surface)

He needs an FDS with the 7201 chip. But because some of us own FDS's with the 3206 chip, if we want him also to teach us to modify the 3206 for dumping and writing:

Working 3206 FDS = $20
RAM adaptor = $5
AC adaptor = $5
Shipping from Japan (including a working 7201 FDS) = $170 (EMS); $108 (SAL); $50 (Surface)

Total = $230 (EMS); $168 (SAL); $110 (Surface)

While the "goal" is $230, for two disk systems and EMS, we can get two disks sytems and slow shipping for $110. 133MHz will get only what we can afford, so your donation matters. And just to try to get you to give a little more, I'll give two free Famicom cartridges to the highest donor.

AndyArcade, everyone's favorite eBay seller, is helping acquire the goods and will maintain the donations; he starts us off by waiving his commission fee and donating to the cause, together totaling nearly $25.

PM me your donation amount, and PayPal your donations to: [Removed]

Very right.

BTW: Let me know when that newsbox "ad" gets annoying. I'm used to keeping the site clean and uncluttered, so it's already getting on my nerves. It'll be gone once it's served its purpose.

Hey guys.  Alex and I want to help with this project too.  We don't really have funds for donating right now.  But we could help you get all the stuff cheaper.  We are willing to sell you the items at cost and get you a much better shipping price.

We can get you the 2 famicom disk systems, with the Adaptors (RAM and AC) and the 10 disks, shipped via AIR MAIL for a total cost of $150.

If the actual shipping is more than that we will throw in the difference as our further donation.

I hope this can help make your goal more obtainable.

NOTE: We have 8 disk systems in stock right now.  We will need to check the systems to make sure the model numbrs are correct.

Hm, well this is interesting.

Any chance you could tell us which Famicom carts you'd be giving away, JC?  8)

I can't because I don't have them yet. They're coming from Japan this week, I think. I'll have around 75 from you to choose from, and I'm not gonna pull out the good ones, so if I end up with a dupe of a really good game, it'll be available to the highest donor.

But! let's remember that you've got to donate to have a chance!

Are you offering two carts or two disks? I remember you posted about a lot of disks you had purchased and disks seem more appropriate given the reason for the donation.   :)

Post by: JC on August 19, 2008, 12:14:56 pm
Yeah, I got a bunch of disks but I don't think I've got any disk dupes. For now, I'll stick with carts, like my post says. If I run into some loose dupe disks, I'll offer those up, too.

Donate.

I'm really looking forward to getting the FDS' and disks to 133MHz so we can get this knowledge compiled.

I've made a donation to this effort.

If we all contribute at least a few bucks, we can make this happen. Whaddya say?  :)

I made a donation a couple days ago. Ill try to make another one soon. Good luck. Maybe when 133mhz gets the fds.s and figures everything out one of the fds.s could be reauctioned off on the forum to make some money for another project.

Let's keep the donations coming. :)

I plan to let this run for a few more weeks; I'm awaiting my dupe games, and I need to donate!

Q: If I end up donating more than anyone else, do I get two free games?

We're at about $75...just need $25 more to hit the $100 mark, which is the least we need.

I know, I know...you're eagerly waiting to see the lot from which you will pick your two free carts. (should arrive soon)

Cool.. I hope 133 can figure out writing to disk.  It has been very difficult to get FDSLoader to write to disk.  The only way successful way that I have written to disk is by using CopyMaster or Disk Hacker.

Has anyone followed this set of instructions? http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=1575.0 (http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=1575.0)

Gives you instructions on how to make a back up.  Didn't know if it actually worked.  Does say that you use "disk keeper".  Anyone have a copy of the image to put up on this site so other people can use it?  I see 133MHz asked too a while ago but no one ever responded to him.
Title: Re: Want to know how to dump and write FDS disks?
Post by: JC on November 11, 2008, 02:19:51 pm
I've got CopyMaster, but that's it. And I don't have it dumped. I've never seen any writing software ROMs on the 'net. chimyfolkbutter has them, so perhaps he'll share them with us at some point.
Title: Re: Want to know how to dump and write FDS disks?

I just sent JC the Disk Keeper image.  It was a bit%! to get but I am sharing it with all of you.  Good Luck!
Title: Re: Want to know how to dump and write FDS disks?

So once the disk image gets put up here (by the way, where will it be?) how do you write disk keeper on the disk if you don't already have a disk keeper program?

Edit:
I just checked my email and I see I was sent a copy of the program, thanks.  Main question still applies, how to put it on a disk without a copy of the program to begin with?
Title: Re: Want to know how to dump and write FDS disks?
Post by: chimyfolkbutter on November 16, 2008, 04:50:44 pm
That's the dilemma.  You need a copy program written to disk by someone who has one plus an FDS cable plus a DOS machine that runs FDSLoader.  This is a nasty combination that only a few have been able to replicate.  I could write the disk for you but you need to get a PC from the 90s to run FDSLoader.  I am such a pack rat, I had my old PC that worked with FDSLoader.   I lucked out that I had some friends on other boards that copied copymaster for me.  Then I had to make the FDSLoader cable which was tedious but doable.

I don't want to discourage anyone but I want to set the expectations.  It's hard but it is possible.

Title: Re: Want to know how to dump and write FDS disks?

I saw that.  What I am saying is that if one has a FDS, an old computer running DOS (have some old pc's that I can use), has made the cable (looking for instructions right now), a blank disk and a game disk, but doesn't have a disk with disk keeper on it how does one create the disk keeper?

Someone has to write Disk Keeper for you or You get FDSLoader to write it (which I have not seen anyone other than the Developer to get FDSLoader to write a disk)

I guess this is an appropriate place to ask about this.

I was going through my pirate disks with my Game Doctor and ran across another copy program that I haven't seen anyone mention. It's called Disk Raider. The text on the title screen is the same as Disk Keeper, but the background is black and the letters are red. It only works through the Game Doctor, unlike Disk Keeper, but functions the same way and is in English. Anyone heard of it before?

Edit: Pic added. Screen says:

Just found another copy program that works like Disk Keeper, but only through a Game Doctor, called NTSC Master. Here's a screenshot (Sorry for the blurry pic). I'm guessing there are more copy programs like this out there with different names.

Can you tell if they do anything different from one to the next, or are they just title screen hacks of the same program?
Title: Re: Want to know how to dump and write FDS disks?
Post by: ericj on November 08, 2009, 02:25:35 pm
There has to be something different about them because if one of the disks can't copy a game, usually one of the other programs can. The title screen and prompts are worded differently between all of them. I'm guessing they're just hacks of Disk Keeper, but since NTSC Master, Disk Raider, and Copymaster only work with a Game Doctor, I'm not sure. Disk Keeper works fine without a GD and equally well with one, with the resulting copies working fine on a regular FDS.

For some reason, I've noticed that Super Pig games can't be copied with any of them. I'm guessing that they have some kind of protection, since they give a code of ERR.FF when trying to copy with Disk Keeper, and just endlessly try to read the disk with the other copy programs. Weird.

i dump my disk using fdsloadr software using fds-drive cable.

writing my own disk-

i use a modified copy master disk, my turbo game doctor, and a half modded fds drive. if i want to copy disk to disk. first i put in copy master. ask for source. insert game i wanna copy. ask for object (blank) throw in blank. done.

if i wanna copy an image to disk- hook up turbo game doctor, fc, fds, load up copy master. ask for source. eject disk from fds. unplug ram adaptor from back of fds drive. load up fdsloadr software on pc with image i wanna write. press escape. hook up db25 end fom parallel port to ram adaptor end that plugs into back of fds. hold right arrow til command comes all way on screen. press enter. image loads up in ram adaptor/ copy master. ask for object. unhook pc cable from ram adaptor. insert blank disk in fds drive. plug ram adaptor end back into fds drive.   done.

thats how i do it. sure alot of people do it bascally the same way. works good too. can write any image to disk this way.

can dump/write anything for anybody. no charge! just need image/ disk. if no disk would do it for images i dont have.

You probably shouldn't rewrite disks for other people with a half-modded drive. Odds are, they will have trouble reading them. They will work fine in your drive since your drive is the same one that wrote them.

hi all.

is there alot of people who don't know how to dump/ re-write fds disk?

first there are many different ways to dump/re-write fds disk, just depends on what way you like or prefer. i use fdsloadr to dump and re-write my fds disk using my fully moded 7201 drive.sometimes i use other methods though.  i wrote a tutorial in .pdf format for dumping disk using fdsloadr with pictures (just hope it helps ). look for it under famicom disk system. currently writing other tutorials on re-writing disk using turbo game doctor, and one using fdsloadr/7201 drive. will also include a tut on how to write an image to disk using pc-ram adaptor cable (like tototek sells) check out the tut, and let me know if it helped.

maverick

keep eye out for the other tutorials!
