That's really a weird coincidence.
I usually don't drink beer, but today I felt like it and you make a thread about it. :crazy:
I just had 2 cans of Yebisu and 2 cans of Asahi (500ml each). (I'd prefer German beer, but I drink what I can get here.)
I think I drank it a bit too fast, because I'm feeling the effects already. I hope my typing isn't affected too much. (I'll check back tomorrow. :D )

'Black Butte' porter; One of my favourite locals. It has a froth-y, almost stout-like texture and a deep, burnt cocoa character to it. I miss being able to have a Caffrey's though, and I could surely go for a pint of Hen's Tooth right about now... I can find the draught-style cans (better than bottles) from time-to-time, but there's none to be had on draught locally/ :bomb:

Ha, I had my first full beer a couple of weeks ago. It was a Corona, and it was kinda gross. I've always taken a sip or something and never liked anything I've tried.

I really see it more as an entire drink category. Like water, soda, juice, milk, tea. There's also beer. (and wine, and liquor). I didn't really drink much of anything alcoholic until I was 28, so I'm not drinking just to get buzzed. I'm just bored of always ordering a Coke or unsweetened iced tea when I go out :P

On Monday night, I had my first drink out at a friend's fire. UV blue mixed with lemonade. Two jars of it and I was good to go (already high though, so that's probably a factor). You call it a pussy drink, I call it tasty. :P

I am drinking a bottle of 7-11 Cabernet Sauvignon. This is actually supposed to be one of my "off days" for drinking (try to drink only on the weekends and on Thursdays, my off day, through the week) but was just feeling a bit frustrated tonight and needed a drink.
Before that, my last beer was a microbrew's dunkel. Before that I had some Belgians, and some German weizen beer and a hoppy "Czech-styled Pilsner" from another microbew. Made my own brews for about 2 years or so, and just love to drink finely-crafted beer. Usually don't drink to a terribly drunk point anymore, tipsy at best is usually my max by now. Just a sign of getting older I guess.

Where is that beer from?
I remember drinking Polish beer all the time while in Germany. My one German friend's parents lived in Cotbus, near the Polish border, and he would always cross over and bring back some beer for us when he went to visit his folks.
Now I am drinking 7-11 beer, titled "The Beer". Cheap, but not very tasty. Trying to scale back financially at the end of the month, hehe.

Why don't they send those Japanese beers to Taiwan? We just get the shitty Japanese beers here, piss water is how I like to think of them, same with the local Taiwan brews, Korean brews, and Chinese brews. Right now the best thing I have access to at the convenience store is Becks, which isn't saying much, since they are quite low on my list of German beers.

I've never really liked beer too bitter for me. I'm not much of a drinker these days because I have issues with my liver and it's associates.I also don't like the taste of most booze anyway so it's something I don't often indulge in

I used to like lagers a lot, but by now, so many of them just taste flavorless to me. I would love to try my old favorite German lagers again, fresh and on tap in Germany, to see if my opinion of them would have changed by now or not.
Last beer I drank was a local Taiwanese beer. It really doesn't do much for me, but neither do the more expensive imported beers readily available here, so why not go local? I remember visiting that brewery when I first arrived in Taiwan, and I got a special tour, after the production manager had found out that I brew my own beer as a hobby. He asked what I thought of the Taiwanese beer made from his company, and I was a bit more honest than I should have been, oops! :-[

I like Radler too...I first had that in Germany. Fun fact: It is named for the word Rad, or wheel, basically as a bicycler's drink so that they could drink and ride. Hehe. At least that's what my German friends had always told me.

What's that for? I already drink pretty fast sometimes, but I've heard of some people taking a whole glass of beer in one shot. Drinking that fast you can't possibly enjoy it that much can you (unless it's nomihoudai and you want value for your money)?

I love trying different beers, and one of my hobbies when vacationing is checking out the local breweries around. With the Asian side of things, most of the mass produced beers suck, but I have still tried most of the ones I could find here, from Thailand, Laos, Korea, Taiwan, China, Japan, etc -- this is my attempt to see if I can find which beers offer the best flavor, for the cheapest price. Even among the crappy beers, some rate higher than others imo.
Over the weekend I was actually at a beer festival, and most of the beers were brought in from breweries around Asia; however, this was a craft beer convention and most of the samples I had were of an excellent quality. I wish the macrobreweries could produce beers of such a high quality.
Also, I am not really a big fan of Molsen. I only had it once or twice, but that was enough for me.

Oh I know Karlovach, and I know radler-style beer. The radler I know is from Germany though, mixed with orange or sprite. Considered a bicyclists's beer, since there was less alcohol. I'd like to try that one Smeg, but I don't think I'll ever find it for sale around these parts.

Yesterday I felt really sick, went to doctor, was put on medicine. So no drinking alcohol for this boy until the medicine is out of my system! Sucks too, since this was a three-day holiday, and the weather is nice, so why did I have to get sick now? :(

IPA...is that one made in Iceland or where? That looks really good...I haven't had a good IPA in about a year or two, so hard to find in Taiwan.
Last beer I had was Bit Burger, a lager from Germany. They started carrying it here in Taiwan for the summer, and this brew really brings back memories, as I had drank it a lot on tap when living in Germany. Now I don't really drink lager anymore (prefer more flavorful, stronger beers), but this really hit the spot after running, and was good for memories too. Gotta stock up on these once I get paid. ;)

Yeah it's made in Iceland. Won an award for the best European IPA in 2012 if I recall correctly :D
Bit Burger is a great lager. They have it from time to time in the shops here.

I actually can easily get a few ciders from Sweden here in Taiwan. I love apple cider in particular, as I come from an apple region in the USA. However, some of the Swedish ciders have been getting a bit too sweet for me as of late...good when I first drank them, but too sweet now. I hope this change doesn't mark some internal body changes as well.

Swedish food and drinks are generally sweeter than in more southern countries. Many foreigners thinks Swedish candy is too sweet anyway. I think it has to do with the fact that it's a northern country (more energy is needed when it's cold). However my friends from Iraq eats some really really sweet pastry that's too sweet for me.

That's quite interesting. I've always liked sweet things, but the last time I had one of the Swedish ciders, it tasted almost syrupy. And that just made me feel like I was going to get diabetes or something, so I stopped drinking it. I forget the brand though.

I drank a pear cider tonight from the UK, not really my favorite though. Also had a South African lager and a kellerbier from Germany, once again forget the names. The Kellerbier was by far the best, but the other two I could take or leave.

I'm currently enjoying a large can of SUNTORY 金麦. As far as beer-ish liquor goes, it's heads and shoulders above the rest. The perfect taste for a night of Donkey Kong 3. :)

We call that water ;) I hate "weak" beers, and they always give me hangovers the day afterwards (and this is true, because these beers are filtered, and so the yeast residue, which can help stop hangovers, is stripped away as well).
I got paid today, so I am browsing websites and thinking of my next gaming purchase, while drinking a Bit Burger. I love this beer, totally takes me back to my Germany days.

The Belgi isn't *technically* beer. It's a "beer flavored liquor", which just means that it was made in such a way as to avoid Japan's harsh taxes on beer.
As far as hopposhu (the beer flavored liquors) drinks go, it's definitely one of the better ones. Pour it in a nice beer glass, serve it at an appropriate temperature and it's pretty good.
I wouldn't say that Japan makes shit beer, but pretty much all of the popular brews are *very* mediocre. And at like 300 yen *per can* it's not really a good value.
Kirin used to have a REALLY good Stout, but when it came back, the formula had changed. Now it's undrinkable. It's like three parts Guinness Extra Stout, one part yesterday's black coffee. :(
Tonight, I'm going with actual beer. Typhoon's comin' and I don't need them to dig my body out of the wreckage surrounded by cheap fake beer. I want 'em to dig me out of the ruins of my apartment, EMPTY Asashi Super Dry can clutched in one hand, Dogbone controller in the other. Yee-haw!

I'm honestly not sure that I would consider Asashi Super Dry as being a good beer. Asashi is actually one of the Japanese brands heavily imported in Japan, and aside from one or two, they all just taste like water to me; however, I am not one to criticize one's personal taste in brews, and am also one that never turns down free beer ;) Whenever I make it to Japan, I want to go Famicom game hunting and maybe tour / visit some of the local breweries. I know, I am so cultured when visiting foreign countries ;D
I just ran out and came back, and am drinking a Bear Beer Strong Lager, which taps in at 7.7% alcohol. By looking at the can, this one was made in Germany but by a subsidiary of the Danish Harboe brewery company. Definitely not my favorite beer by a long shot, but there is a special going on in Taiwan, basically a tall four pack for $1.70 per can, or just shy of $7 total. Considering the other options available and prices, this one offered the best bang for the buck, so that is what I grabbed.
Yay for not working mornings for Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays this July. :)

Someone got a bottle of Hitachino Nest White Ale for my wife since it has an owl on it (http://i.imgur.com/ZLHsrn4l.jpg). She didn't like it very much (tastes too much like beer). I enjoyed it, though (tasted like beer ;D).

For the new year I decided to make the infamous resolution again, of losing weight. Oh, and an upcoming half marathon in March also made me realize that I need to do something about my weight situation, and as such, I greatly reduced my alcohol intake for about a week now. Last night I was out with some friends though, and I had a Sam Adams Winter Lager on tap, before moving to a small local brewery and having one of their own brews, Ghosts in the Graveyard I think it is called. Very yummy stuff.
I think that this year I want to take up homebrewing again, as I am just missing the craft beer scene so much when I am away from the States.

That sounds very interesting, i've never tried Grape Lagers and that's because i didn't seen it in any super-market.. ( btw im sick of those radlers with different flavours.. ugh. )

I haven't ever tried the beer you drank, but I generally like strong beers. I've found a few at about 15% alcohol, but that is incredibly strong for a beer; after about 11 or 12%, you really need to manipulate it to make beer.
I don't really like Budweiser, at least not the American version.

Is the Canadian Budweiser the one from the Czech Republic? If so, you are drinking the original Budweiser beer. :)
I am finishing up an Extra Strong 12% beer by Harboe, a Danish company, before heading to bed. The beer is mediocre at best, but I wanted to relax with a nice buzz and some warmth before drifting off to sleep tonight in my cold apartment. I have made a conscious effort to cut back on my drinking dramatically over the past few weeks (though I started to make a 12 liter batch of apple wine...go figure), but over the weekend I just can't resist the urge to drink a few and relax, clear my mind and also open my artistic side.

Yeah I don't think Czechvar is bad...it is the original Budweiser, and IMO should be the only Budweiser (basically the American company copied the name back during the 1800s, but back then American Budweiser actually tasted fairly good...i.e. like a German / European lager. Only after prohibition did it (and a lot of the other German-American breweries, i.e. Busch, Pabst, etc) begin watered-down and start to taste like swill. I had read a very interesting book on the history of beer in America, and I would have loved to be able to taste some of the macrobrewery beers when produced by the (mostly) German founders during the 1800s.
Right now I am sipping on some fermented apple beverage before heading to bed. The beverage I made / am making myself, and is currently somewhat comparable to Germany's Apfelwein / ebbolwoi, though I hope to make It more into a cider before I am finished.

Let's bump this bad boy to the top. Last beer I drank was a Taiwan Gold Medal beer...not really my favorite, to be honest, but in the rural areas it is hard to find decent beer locally. :(
Last week my girlfriend decided to come and stay the night, and since I didn't have to go into work until late on Friday, we decided to get a bottle of lychee vodka and have a fun night. Things started out fine, we took a few shots, mixed some drinks, and also ate some nice snacks that I had purchased for us earlier. A few hours later though, we nearly finished the bottle of vodka. Then things took a turn for the worse. I don't remember exactly what happened, but I do remember lying on the floor and playing with my cat's one cat toy, batting it around. A little while later my girlfriend had told me that she peed on the tile floor a bit, before heading to the bathroom. :upsetroll: Then I miraculously ended up making instant noodles without burning the apartment down, befor calling it a night and heading to bed. Damn I am still recovering from that night, that is how I know I am getting old.

I have been cutting back even more lately. I am down to 2 beers per sitting and for the first time in my life, I actually don't feel like drinking all the time. I think I'm actually ready to stop getting wasted altogether and just have a few beers every once in a while.
What ever the case, the last beer I had was Czechvar. The taste is really starting to grow on me. It's nice to slowly slip one over an hour or two.

Yeah that's the way to go. A few beers and some good friends is all I need. No hard drinks or anything that gives you nasty hangovers and stuff. Last beer was Norrlands Guld (standard draft beer).

I've found that the more active I am, the less I drink. On the nights that I go running, I usually don't drink at all, and if I do have a beer or two, it is never to the point of getting drunk or wasted.
The night I drank all the vodka with my girlfriend, the night before I had ran 15 k or so. Talk about going from one health extreme to the next.
I recently got a bike and although I don't feel 100% comfortable riding it yet (I haven't rode a bike in 10 years or so, and never in a city environment), I took it out for a test run today, and hope that after my half marathon on Sunday, that the next week there will be some nice weather where I can plan some nice bike rides in the more rural areas. Once again, won't be drinking when doing that stuff, and probably won't have the desire to either.

Yeah they say that addiction comes easily when you are under-stimulated and the best cure against it is to keep yourself occupied by various things. When there is not much interesting things to do it's easier to fall back to drinking again.

Where I sit, in the larger cities you can get a small selection of German beer, but I've come to discover that I much prefer beer on tap. My tastes are also changing with beer, and I much prefer craft beers. But I am curious to see if any of my favorite German beers, from when I was in Germany, are the same as Manuels

I don't actually have any favorite brands, but since I'm from Bavaria I tend to prefer Bavarian (Erdinger, Franziskaner etc.) and Czech brands.
I like "dunkles Weizenbier" (dark wheat beer) and "Bock" type beers.

Bock beer in my opinion is VERY. Strong tasting, bordering on the line of tasting like hard alcohol. You can get a 7% here and it tastes way stronger than a 9.5% Belgian style triple that you can also get here. Not a bad taste, but very strong tasting.
I drank 2 8% FAXE beers last night. I have looked FAXE up on beer review sites and it always gets horrible ratings but I really enjoy it.

You've never tried it before?
I like it, but it is better served slightly chilled, as opposed to cold. Many of the bars / stores sell it refrigerated, and that is too cold...it takes away from the taste and I don't like it that way.
Guinness is not the best beer in that style, but it is quite popular, and available. That is why I drink it. If I had access to others of that type in Taiwan, I would rather purchase microbrewery varieties.

I prefer Tiger to Tsing Tao, I personally think it is a bit more flavorful. None of these are on the top of any of my lists though.
Now I am drinking a Kronenbourg 1664. I wanted to grab some Sam Adams lagers (just found a shop that sells them), but I didn't have time to do so.

Asashi has apparently been making some new line of beers, based off of craft beer styles. Apparently the second installment in this series is Asashi's "Dry Pale Ale". I saw this beer at the convenience store, so I grabbed a few cans and was impressed. The beer was reasonably priced, and quite hoppy and flavorful, compared to the other choices available in these parts. This is about as close to craft beer as I can find here, without searching out some specialty shop, I hope this one stays around and isn't just some summer exclusive, like they usually do with importing beers into Taiwan (basically in the summers the convenience stores import a larger variety of imported beers, but during the spring, fall and winter we are stuck with dregs). This one is a keeper, and I am quite surprised by that. I wonder what other beers in this series will come out.
On another note, TTL (Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor) just released a Honey Lager. I had high expectations for it, since another local restaurant makes a honey craft beer; however, TTL got it wrong and their version sucks. To me, it just tastes like their weak lager with some honey added into it...not particularly good. On another note, I actually (accidently) insulted the guy in charge of the quality control at TTL, about three years ago, but that is a story for a different time ;)

I had a Toña with dinner last night in Nicaragua. Still not a beer guy, but it's dirt cheap here. That said, I gave the other half of it to my friend and ordered a rum and coke instead.

Asahi Black beer is pretty much the only Asahi beer to drink for me. Light brings back bad memories..

In an effort to cut my consumption down even more I decided to give some low alcohol beer a go. I had 2 0.5% beers the other day. Honestly, not too bad, and I even got a little pretend buzz from them haha.

Around 2010 I had somehow contracted C-Diff, and my doctor had originally misdiagnosed it, saying I had Chrohn's Disease or Colitis. He gave me a large list of items not to eat, including the following:
-fried foods

Later I had more tests done, and after the true cause for my problem was revealed, I went through several drugs until I finally got cleared up.
Why am I sharing this? Well, during that time I had decided to give non-alcoholic beer a try, as well as non-alcoholic wine. I personally felt the beer tasted better than the wine. Although not nearly as good or with as much variety as craft beer, for example, the non-alcoholic beer available (I had found lager as well as one other type, I forget) wasn't bad, to everyone's surprise.

Last night I had a few budweisers and a few brewhouse(cheap beer) and got fairly intoxicated for te firs time in a while. It was a good night. The morning however sucked. I had a major headache which is something I haven't got from alcohol in a while. I guess that means I have flushed it from my system.

That's great news though, I think!
In the near future, I think I am going to be drastically cutting back my alcohol intake. I really need to lose some weight before I go to Japan, or I will literally get murdered in my sleep by roommates for snoring loudly. And I know drinking beer is definitely one of the large players stopping me from my weight loss goals.

Got together with some friends and drank some beer and ate something called Hayashi Rice (stew of hashed beef with rice I think) last night. Drank a Swedish Christmas beer which was surprisingly good (called Julsofiero, a Christmas version of Sofiero beer) and then a few cheap beers and some whiskey. Not too much, just the right amount. :)

It was some sort of craft beer. We had a get together and my boyfriend bought a variety pack of craft beers, all of which were good. I think the last one I had from it was this lime flavored thing.

Chill it till it's about to start frosting and then drink fast haha. That's what I would have done back in the day anyway. I did a bit of drinking over the thanksgiving weekend(in Canada). Mostly Budweiser but some other stuff as well. Stella Artois and some other stuff.

Not really my last beer but a story of my last big drinking party in Japan this summer.
We where supposed to go with nomihoudai (all-you-can-drink) but we where waiting for some other friends so we decided to take a few quality drinks first while we were still sober (nomihoudai in Japan is more about quantity). I had some good nihonshu (saké) and imoshouchu (sweet potato liquor) and all was good, our firends showed up and we went with the nomihoudai. Our friends, who were still sober, wasn't happy with the quality of the nomihoudai drinks so they ordered some more expensive drinks and gave me the cheap ones. Also of course since it was nomihoudai I also kept ordering a steady flow of beer to get as much bang for the buck as possible. I think we ended the nomihoudai with some more hard liquor when the time was up. Damn I haven't been that wasted in years, I somehow managed to get back to my hotel before the last train went though.

I've just about given up drinking all hard liquor, and rarely drink wine although I like it. Now I am giving up beer until my brother comes to visit on the 26th of this month, so abstaining from drinking for ten days.
Lately I think my drinking has been a little over the top, and I just want to get away from it. Gonna also try to start jogging again in the evenings.

Oh sake! I'm no expert but I absolutely love sake! I prefer heated sake the most, but some types of sake are better served cold, and in summer cold is probably best. If you don't know which one is best you could try both ways I guess. I've never prepared it myself so I don't really know how to do it, but I think heating is usually around 40° or so but there are several types of heating.

Oh I see, yeah maybe it's better heated. I know many Japanese that don't like nihonshu (as sake is called in Japanese) that much, but some of them say that they like it only together with Japanese cuisine. Personally I love the "ricey taste" of it and can drink it together with about any food though.

I never drank sake heated, but maybe next winter I will try. When I buy it and drink at my apartment, I just drink it room temperature, not bad at all. I think it tastes good, but it doesn't taste nearly as strong as it is, so it can easily catch up on me (in comparison, I usually drink "strong" beers", also room temperature, and with them you can taste the alcohol content in them.

Yeah, Tsingtao isn't the best, but the local stuff I bet was amazing.
I had a few Heinekens and a Grand Kirin JPL. The latter is quite nice, but I only drink one or two of those at a time, then switch to something cheaper if I want to drink more.
The Family Mart near me frustrates me...every summer they have a selection of summer beers, from around the world. Some are mediocre (like Pilsner Urquell), but others are actually fairly nice, like some craft brews from Anchor Brewery in the USA (I have no idea how Anchor compares to other craft brewers in the States, I've been away for too long, but anything craft over here in Taiwan is nice compared to what is usually available, and the pickings are always quite slim for this sort of stuff). So last week or so they had posted on the beer fridge and also the front door they have this sale, buy three of the summer beers, get 20% off. The only problem is that the shop doesn't carry any of those beers...
I talked with the cashier the other day, then she referred me to the boss and I spoke with her, and she said the reason is because there isn't enough space in the fridge. She asked which beers I wanted, and said she would get them in. But so far, no dice, and since Taiwan is such a small island, next day delivery is pretty much expected, so it seems like this just isn't happening.
The thing that makes me the most frustrated though, is the idea of advertising something you aren't even carrying for sale. Last August or September I remember the same sort of bullshit, where a drug store sent out sales fliers and among the stuff was a cream that was supposed to help with eczema and psoriasis. I went to a few of the shops and tried to buy it, but they then said it was only available in the capital city. Again, I was left scratching my head and wondering why stores even bother to put stuff in sales fliers and run specials on products they don't even sell. Maybe it draws more customers into the stores, but in the end, it just pisses me off and makes me want to shop at those stores even less.

That's great news Max - sound like just growing up and Fatherhood to me though, don't be so hard on yourself :)
I rarely drink either, but I like to enjoy a small whiskey on a Friday night every now and then.
So I hardly ever drink beer now, unless I'm watching TV with my Dad.
Had a couple Asahi blacks over the weekend (I suppose it's a Japanese stout) as we had really nice weather here and friends over.

Thanks Luke. Means a lot. :) I also want to be a better role model for my kids. My oldest son (6) only has one kidney, so the lifestyle I used to live with all the alcohol would be dangerous for him. I still smoke pot thpugh. It keeps me level headed. I have cut down on that too but that's going to be a lifelonger I think.
The idea of having a nicely chilled beer on a hot sunny afternoon is extremely appealing though lol...

Yeah good to hear Max. Alcoholism is quite common here unfortunately, and I try to be careful to not get addicted to it.
I also drink much more to enjoy the beer rather than to get drunk nowdays. Oh I love that beer. I toured the (old) brewery quite a few times, I really enjoy their scratch series as well.

Sweet Baby Java. It's like Sweet Baby Jesus, but with espresso beans infused. Good stuff.
I live pretty close to their current brewery. It's a cool place to get a drink (if you can find a parking spot!). I never knew about the old location :P
