Title: Famicom comic (1985) scanned
Post by: xan_racketboy_fan on September 16, 2011, 03:27:35 pm
Hi everyone,

Not sure who would be interested, but I've scanned and uploaded the comic (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=W7C2U82M) (single PDF file) that came with my Famicom. Was this originally bundled with the console at release? Either way, I'd like to share it with you guys. Would anyone be interested in translating it - I'd love to re-upload an English version. Enjoy  8)

Edit: 08/22/2021 - it's been nearly 10 years since this post first opened up, and I've been away for a very long time! Just wanted to put everyone's hardwork in this post in the spoiler (post #83). Thanks again everyone, I hope you're all well and good during these gnarly times.

That'd be great if you could, I'd love to understand what was going on  ;D Seems like a cute way of discussing the Safety Precautions of Famicom.

Very nice indeed!
I also thought about translating famicom manuals as good as I can but I don't have so much time right now.

You guys are welcomed! Just color me jealous - I wish I understood what was going on, lol. Maybe you guys could break up the pages and lessen the load, of course this would mean different interpretations but at least us English speakers would get the just of it :)

I should really be doing something else but this was more fun heh. This is the script for the first 8 pages in English.

I did this to the best of my ability and I can't compare with Manuel who is living in Japan also I'm not a native English speaker. Maybe a native English speaker should look at it. Also maybe there is someone who can insert it in the PDF file.

I try to the best of my ability to translate every aspect of every sentence
so that as little as possible will be lost in translation. Please bear with me.

SFX = Sound Effect

This is Family Computerâ„¢!!

-Family Computer Compilation-

------Front page------
----------1----------

SFX: Riririririiiing (School bell)

Boy: Yaay finiished for today!

Boy: Kyouko chan, come to my place so we can play famicom! This time I will win for sure!

Kyouko: Manabu kun have tried so many times but never win! You are so careless.

TN: I'm not familiar with a certain phrase here so this might be inaccurate.

Manabu: Bah!

Kyouko: But didn't your mother get angry with you?

TN: I'm not sure about this line.

TN: Manabu is a real boys name but it allso means learning. He has a manly way of talking.
Kyouko is a common girls name and she has a girly way of talking. I try to preserve this in english as much as possible.

----------1----------
----------2----------

Manabu: No problem! We can decide on a time now. So since we have made a promise it's ok!.

SFX: Thump thump (heartbeat)

----------2----------
----------3----------

SFX: Toko toko toko (footsteps, I don't know what it is in english sorry)

Kyouko: Wh- What is it you?

Kyouko: But oh is he cute.

Manabu: What is it chap!?

Tail Boy: Oh no don't mind me.

----------3----------
----------4----------

Manabu: OK see you later then.

Kyouko: Yes, I'll come.

SFX: Look look (looking around for something)

Manabu: Hey don't follow me around!

Tail Boy: No worry!

Manabu: What a strange guy.

----------4----------
----------5----------

Manabu: I'm home!

Tail Boy: I'm home!

Manabu: What the!?

Mother: Welcome hoome!

Tail Boy: I'm Konkichi! Sorry to disturb!

SFX: Bow

Mother: Oh my welcome.

TN: Manabus mother should have a feminine way of talking.

----------5----------
----------6----------

Konkichi: Let's have fun together!

Konkichi: Cut off from the TV!

Konkichi: Let me try a bit!

TN: Konkichi has a manly way of talking of course and obviously acts a little strange.

----------6----------
----------7----------

SFX: Piko (pressing a button, I don't really know what piko means sorry)

SFX: Daaaze! (dumbfounded)

Konkichi: What is this? What an easy game.

----------7----------
----------8----------

Kyouko: Sorry to disturb!

SFX: THUMP! (sudden heartbeat)

SFX: Meromero (drunk with love. I can't think of an english equivalent. Maybe "lovesick" would fit)

Kyouko: Oh my did you also come?

Manabu: This guy is great!

SFX: Kochi kochi (I'm not sure but I think "shake shake" would probably fit here)

Kyouko: What is so great? He is just messing up, Isn't he?

Manabu: Eh?

Mario: Eeeeh?

Mother: Only for one hour, ok.

Edit: Changed a few things that I didn't like.

If we can get a nice, full translation, then I wouldn't mind 'shopping in the text.  I did it for the Disk Fax Comic (http://famicomworld.com/workshop/articles/the-holy-grails/holy-grails-an-introduction/) (and I know the diagonal text looks weird, but I was just matching how the original was styled).

NP, it is both fun and worthwhile I think. Nice to see that so many people wants to help. Now if we could just get a native English speaker to look into the translated sentences and make them more idiomatic with the help of my translators notes. I already want to change a lot of them that sounds weird.

I have no time to continue on this this week though, except maybe in the weekend...

Good job using more idiomatic expressions punkpolitical! I see you even re-sized the speachbubbles!

I would like to comment on a few things:

Page 3
Kyouko asks Konkichi what he wants and calls him "anata" which is a little more polite way of saying you (even though saying you is not really polite) than what Manabu calls him. Maybe kid is not quite right here. Also she doesn't say "who are you" but more like "what is it?". For Manabu "kid" is fine though.

Page 4
Small typo "their" instead of "there"

Gyorogyoro I think is supposed to be the "sound" of looking (around) rather than just a swishing sound of turning of the head, but I don't know what to translate it to... I guess my "look look" sounds weird?

Page 7
Konkichi actually says something like "What is this? What an easy game." or "What is this? Such an easy game.".

Page 8
Kyouko actually says "ojamashimasu" which is a greeting always said when going in to someones home. It should be the same as what Konkichi said on page 5 which you slickly turned into "Sorry to intrude" (much better than my original translation). By this the reader understands that she just entered the house.

Meromero (メロメロ) is still untranslated. It means that he is becoming feeble because of love (when he heard Kyoukos voice, and the knowledge that she is coming). It's an onomatopoeic expression that I don't think exists in English so we have no choice but to use an expression with the same meaning much like a sound effect. I suggest "Lovesick" but maybe it sounds weird?

Mario doesn't really say "ow" here but "areee" (アレー) just like Manabu's shorter "are?" (アレ?). It means something like what? or eh? (Why is this happening?). The thing is that Mario says the same thing as Manabu but more intensive as he is actually the victim, which makes the whole thing comical. That is the feeling I get at least and what I was trying to put into it.

Post by: punkpolitical on October 02, 2011, 12:32:24 pm
Fix some of the things. ;D ;D ;D

Page 8

Meromero (メロメロ) is still untranslated. I did not translate this because it looks like ( XOXO ) which stands for hugs and kisses in English.
I thought the hugs and kisses would show that he likes the girl and is nervous. I think i will take it out and put in a proper characters for XOXO.

Great job, punkpolitical - if this ever gets completed, let me know and I'll add it to the first post!

Also love the image has been "cleaned up" - looks HDfied  :bub:
Title: Re: Famicom comic (1985) scanned
Post by: P on October 02, 2011, 04:03:32 pm
Heh it certainly looks like XOXO, a bit square rings though. It's short and kind of related but I think it's a bit different. Maybe jelly or something (like in turning into jelly if there is such an expression in English)? Wow this one is really hard to translate!

Just one more thing about Mario's "are" again, the ー character is a long vowel mark which lengthens the vowel before it much like ː in IPA (phonetic script). So Mario actually says "areee" (long E) unlike Manabu who doesn't have a long vowel mark in his bubble so it is just "are" for him. So it should rather be a more drawn-out "Eeeeh!?" (same pronunciation just a longer vowel) for Mario.

I might as well post the two more pages that I have translated. This time I used spoiler tags to make my posts a bit shorter:
Spoiler

----------9----------

Konkichi: This is good, what is it called?

SFX: Munch munch (eating)

Kyouko: You don't know this kind of cookie?

Konkichi: ... Cookie!?

Konkichi: And this is?

SFX: Chuu (sucking, I don't know the English sound effect sorry)

SFX: GAAAH! (screaming)

SFX: Twitch twitch

Manabu: What!? The juice knocked him out!

----------9----------
---------10----------

Kyouko: Oh my! The Famicom got all wet.

Konkichi: Aah! That sure surprised me!

Konkichi: I'm weak against water you know.

Konkichi: Aaaaah!! This is really bad!

Konkichi: Kyouko chan wait a bit! I'll remove the water.

SFX: Lit! (Light up)

TN: Light up, this is another hard one...

SFX: Sparkle sparkle

Wow that was fast! As for lit, what about using a sound effect that people recognize and that is normally used for turning on a lamp? That way we don't have to invent something new and people will hopefully instantly understand.

"Melting" is another suggestion for meromero (again if there is such an expression in English that is used for this situation).

Two more pages translated! I must stress that all my translations are provisional. I expect them to be changed several times before it's complete.

Before I forget I want to make a couple of corrections. On page 1 Kyouko should say: "Manabu kun you have tried so many times but you never win! You are so careless." (or alternately put Manabu kun after never win if it sounds better) I forgot "you" here.

Spoiler

---------11----------

Kyouko: Amazing! What was that now?

Konkichi: Psychokinesis!

Manabu: It was just a little wet, why did you panic like that?

Konkichi: What? You don't know?

Manabu: About what?

Konkichi: I guess it can't be helped then.

---------11----------
---------12----------

Manabu: The Famicom is weak against water you see. Inside the main unit there are LSIs and
from these goes many connector traces.

Electricity flows here and if the water reaches this, I'm afraid it will short circuit you see.

Manabu: Get it?

Kyouko: Uh-huh, I know that electricity is bad with water.

Manabu: By the way Konkichi, What is an LSI?

Konkichi: Whaa, so you don't know about LSI either.

TN: He says Heee (pronounced as E in "get" not like in "seek") instead of "Whaa" I have no
idea what you would say in English though. It's what you say when you find out something intresting.

SFX: Hihi (laughing) (Is it spelled "Heehee" maybe?)

Kyouko: That is impossible for us to know. It's something that isn't taught at school.

To be continued......

Edit: Removed confusing corrections (thanks Manuel).

Yeah that is kind of like the sequel to this. But it looks like that one is mirrored. Another translation is over at http://www.videogameden.com/article.htm?fdsw and it doesn't seem to be mirrored. Both translations keeps the Japanese sound effects and have explaining notes at the bottom. Maybe we should consider doing something similar if we can't solve our current problems.
I would like to see the untranslated version of this FDS Comic.

By the way I hope I can translate a few more pages this weekend, I'll be more careful to not make mistakes like the last one and keep notes of anything I don't fully understand.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions 80sFREAK.

Yeah there is no screw in the middle where he is putting the screwdriver, maybe a mistake from the artist. But I'm sure he is trying to open the Famicom up judging by the situation, and Konkichi even says not to open it no doubt. Also you can see the curved spinning marks near Manabus hand that shows that he is actually turning the screwdriver.

Melting heart sounds fine by me. I'll let punkpolitical decide though.

Update time!! There you go. Four more pages!
I mean to finish what I start, slowly but surely!

Spoiler

Konkichi: These are LSIs called CPU and PPU!
Konkichi: It looks like a centipede but if we compare it to a human it is equivalent to the brain, the most important thing you know!
(TN: I'm not 100% sure about the above line)
Konkichi: The CPU is the brain that gives orders. It performs complicated calculations with fantastic speed, makes Mario and others move and let's music come out.
Konkichi: It's far superior to Manabu!
Konkichi: Next is the PPU!
Konkichi: This thing's job is to project the results of the CPU's calculations on the TV you see.
---------15----------
---------16----------
Kyouko: Hmm, so the PPU's abilities has something to do with the beauty of animations right?
Konkichi: That's right! As one would expect of Kyouko chan!
Manabu: So then what's inside this game cartridge?
Konkichi: Inside the cartridge there are two "memories" (LSIs that store things).
Konkichi: These are also part of the brain but one of them is for instructions and the other one contains pictures.
---------16----------
---------17----------
Konkichi: By inserting the cartridge into the 60-pin connector this way, the two memories will be connected to the main unit's CPU and PPU.
SFX: Kachi!
RF-switch
AC-adapter
Konkichi: This way the CPU is following the instructions from the memories on the cartridge, does calculations of the game and gives various instructions to the PPU, you see.
The pictures of the PPU changes into radio waves with the help of the RF-modulator, passing the RF-switch and are projected on the TV.
(TN: I'm not 100% sure about the above line)
Manabu: I'm getting to understand more and more. So that's why wether it's properly connected or not is very important right?
Konkichi: One shouldn't insert the connector roughly, but insert it quietly and properly.
---------17----------
---------18----------
Manabu: If we illustrate what Konkichi said as if it was a TV studio...
Manabu: You could almost say that the cartridge's instruction memory is the manus, the picture memory is the TV star, the CPU is the director, the PPU is the camera while the RF-modulator is the broadcasting station right?

TV star ---> Cartridge memory <--- manus
TV camera ---> PPU   CPU <--- director
RF-modulator <--- Broadcasting station

Konkichi: Ooh! Manabu is understanding quite allot, aren't you!
Manabu: Ehen!
Kyouko: For such a small thing it contains a surprisingly lot of things, doesn't it!

Oh punkpolitical you're back too! Translating feels allot easier now than when we started this project for about a year ago. Also I have a denshi jisho with a stylus now so I can look up kanji so much faster than with radical look up, or by drawing with a mouse. I figured that if I do at least one page a day we should be finished with this pretty soon.

Allright another two pages:
Spoiler
---------19----------
Manabu: Alright! I challenge you with a game once again!
Manabu: What... Some trash got stuck in here!
Konkichi: What do you think you are doing Manabu!?
Konkichi: What are you gonna do if the connector line gets damaged!?
Manabu: Ah! Is it so? Sorry.
Konkichi: Don't do that! You can't touch it with you finger!
Manabu: Why is that? It won't get damaged if I just used my finger right?
Konkichi: You don't get it Manabu.
Konkichi: Humans have static electricity right!?
---------19----------
---------20----------
Kyouko: I know! When I snap with my skirt my legs stick together!
SFX: Pachi pachi (the snapping sound or whatever it is called)
Konkichi: mmh!
Manabu: What are you thinking about!?
SFX: poka
Konkichi: You see in the computer the changing electricity parts are very small (TN: Not 100% sure about that last line). Even so if a human touch the terminals (TN: AKA "poles"), a large amount of static electricity flows into the computer. If that happens the terminals might burn off!
Kyouko: I see! It's kind of the same as when a hose is connected to a water supply tap and the water is flowing and suddenly the hose is twisted. If a lot of water are flowing then the hose will swell up and become disconnected from the tap.
Konkichi: As expected by Kyouko chan!
---------20----------

That's about half the story! And there're not an awful lot of text heavy pages left now.

Was this originally bundled with the console at release?

No, the original console was the squarebutton Famicom and it did not include the manga. I believe they started issuing this manga with the new roundbutton Famicom in early 1985. There's a new-style label Mario Bros. cartridge in the Famicom's slot on the cover, they use roundbutton controllers and it says 1985 on the back as well.

Yeah that sounds plausible.

OK I figured it was time for another update or it will be too much at once.

One thing about Konkichi. We should consider to spell his name "Conkichi" (like in that other translation) because Con is written in katakana and kichi in kanji and Con is probably the con in famicom (famicon). Also it says con on his cap. Kichi means good fortune BTW. No need to go back and change his name just yet though as there might be more things to change as a final polish. I will however spell his name "Conkichi" from now on.

Here you go! Ten more pages:
Spoiler

---------21----------
Manabu: So we can't touch it at all huh?. (TN: I'm not sure about this line at all)
<---------- Unplugging plug
Manabu: But when it's not in use it should be ok right?
Conkichi: No you can't! Even if the plug is out the static electricity in a human is still passed over to it don't you see?
Manabu: Then what do you do when there are trash inside it?
Conkichi: When this happens you can turn it upsidedown or scrape the scrap out with a cotton swab.
Conkichi: Be careful about this as well.
Don't touch the AC-adapter's terminal-------->
Do absolutely not touch the expand connector-------->
---------21----------
---------22----------
Mother: Manabu! Takashi kun is here!
Manabu: Oh no! I going to play soccer today!
SFX: sotto (gently putting the famicom in place)
Conkichi: That Manabu. What is he doing?
---------22----------
---------23----------
Kyouko: It's soccer! Don't you know?
SFX: Waa waa (noise from the kids playing)
Conkichi: Well on my planet we are doing something like this in the sky but...
SFX: Dote! (falling slapstick style. "Thud" probably fits here)
Kyouko: Conkichi kun, are you really an alien?
Conkichi: What's an alien?
Conkichi: I would like to always be with you Kyouko chan but I have to go home now or mama will scold me.
Kyouko: Go home you say? Where is that?
Conkichi: Over there.
SFX: puruun puruun
---------23----------
---------24----------
Conkichi: I like you Kyouko! I will come back!
SFX: Waa waa
SFX: Piko piko
---------24----------
---------25----------
SFX: Piko piko
SFX: Kon kon (knock knock)
Manabu: What if it isn't Conkichi! Where have you been!?
---------25----------
---------26----------
Conkichi: I had the graduation exam and was studying for it.
Conkichi: Kyouko chan isn't here?
Manabu: We kind of had a little fight...
Conkichi: A fight? All right!
Mother: Manabuuu!
Manabu: What is iiit!?
Mother: Oh my! A friend?
Conkichi: Sorry to intrude!
---------26----------
---------27----------
Mother: When did he come here?
Manabu: What are you getting so worked up about?
Conkichi: You as the same as always Manabu.
Conkichi: The Famicom is weak against heat you know.
Manabu: Why?
Conkichi: If the main unit's heat goes up, the electric current on the inside will become really fast. When that happens the main unit's heat will go up even more and because of the heat it soon won't be able to control the current and it will become a big mess.
---------27----------
---------28----------
Manabu: So when the heat goes up, the balance will start to break down? It's the same as marathon!
Conkichi: What's that?
Manabu: You don't know about marathon?
Manabu: During a marathon heat will have great effects on you.
Manabu: If it's hot the marathon runner's temperature will also go up, he will sweat, get thirsty and get exhausted.
For that reason marathon races will be usually be held when the temperature is lower like during the afternoon or evening.
Conkichi: Amazing Manabu! That's correct! You have studied well!
---------28----------
---------29----------
Conkichi: Ah it's Kyouko chan!
Kyouko: Waa! Conkichi kun good to see you again!
Kyouko: We are having a snowball fight at school now.
Kyouko: Conkichi why don't you come and join our team.
Conkichi: What's that?
SFX: kyu (squeeze)
SFX: pecha!
Conkichi: Uheeh!
---------29----------
---------30----------
Boy: Ah this is cold! We should be quitting now.
Boy: Haa haa
Kyouko: Let's go to my place!
---------30----------
[close]

At this rate we should be done pretty soon!

2012-08-28 Edit: The last pages finally translated!!
I was a bit busy so it took a bit longer but here it is:

Spoiler

---------31----------
Manabu: Hey everyone, Conkichi here is amazing!
Manabu: He knows loads of things about Famicom.
Conkichi: When you say Famicom you might think that there's only games to know about. (TN: OK I got real problems with this sentence)
SFX mukka mukka
Boy: Is there other things but games?
Conkichi: Yes from now on there are allot of other things you can do.
Kyouko: What kind of things?
Conkichi: For example Magnetical disks! If you have that you can store memory and it will become possible to rewrite a game.
Conkichi: Another thing, you'll be able to study using the Famicom.
---------31----------
---------32----------
Kids: Heeeh amazing!
Conkichi: The Famicom is needed for that.
Conkichi: So use it with care!
Kid: Yes, got it!
Conkichi: Ah! I must go home!
SFX: Suuu! (a smooth movement)
Conkichi: I'll be back another time!
SFX: Bah! (taking off)
---------32----------
---------33----------
Manabu: Be sure to come back!
Kyouko: Teach us lots of different things!

---------34----------
Conkichi: Well then, let's review this again.

① Don't let it get wet.

Anyone are welcome to help with anything including suggestions, translation help or helping with inserting the final text into the speech bubbles. :bub:

Great! punkpolitical is back again! Ooh this is the most text heavy part, took a while to translate.

Looking at the translation inserted is always kind of embarrassing when I see how much better English I could have used and such. I initially purposely made a very literal translation but I later realized that it's hard for anyone else to know what can be changed so it's up to the translator to use decent English. Thus I took some small liberations in translating the later pages so the English hopefully looks a bit better there.

When it's released it's not perfect but it's better than nothing, people can at least read it and understand everything (assuming everything is correctly translated).

When the first release is ready you can upload it to the Famicom World site as part of the articles or such if you want. LKermel said he could host it too. He added the untranslated version of the Disk comic on his site and is gonna add a PDF version of the translated one. http://www.videogameden.com/article.htm?fdsw

What comic are you talking about? Is it different from the Disk System comic? There's also a very short instructional comic for the blue fax disks on the Famicom World site that Manuel translated. But it's not that one?

Really nice work, guys!

I read over the scanlation and have the following suggestions for corrections:

Title: Re: Famicom comic (1985) scanned
Post by: P on September 29, 2012, 12:24:01 pm
This is gold! Thank you UglyJoe!

Quote from: UglyJoe on September 29, 2012, 09:32:58 am
  • define LSI somewhere (big panel, page 12) (note: "Large-Scale Integration circuit", or similar)

You mean like to keep a small note under the panel? On page 12 LSI is yet to be explained and later it's just said that it's like a brain.

Quote from: UglyJoe on September 29, 2012, 09:32:58 am
  • "You see in the computer the changing electricity parts are very small" (page 20, main panel) (note: I'm not sure what this sentence is trying to say...)

Oh I messed up bad here lol. It should probably be "the electricity that is used" not "electric parts that are changing" so it's saying something like: "the electricity used in the computer is on a very small scale" or less literal: "the computer uses a very small amount of electricity". I translated 電気 (denki) to "electricity parts" instead of "electricity" which was a mistake but I have no idea how I managed to turn "use" into "change".

Quote from: UglyJoe on September 29, 2012, 09:32:58 am
  • "scrape the scrap out" => "scrape the trash out" (page 21, main panel) (note: keep consistent with the word used by Manabu in the prior frame)

I guess I have to explain why it's inconsistent. The word for trash that Manabu use at first is "gomi" but when Conkichi is explaining how to remove it with a cotton swab he uses the word "kizu" which could mean anything from wound or scratch to disgrace according to the dictionary but in this case I think he meant a stain or dirt or something that can be rubbed out with a cotton swap.
So I suggest we keep "trash" as it is and change "scrap" to "stain" and maybe change the sentence slightly: "or scrape stains out with a cotton swab".

Quote from: UglyJoe on September 29, 2012, 09:32:58 am
  • "Conkichi" => "Konkichi" (page 23, panel 3)

Conkichi and Konkichi are both fine by me as long as it's kept consistent on release.

OK but check the FDS comic out on the link I posted and you can maybe see if it's the same that you have seen. The Fax Disk comic I was talking about is here http://famicomworld.com/workshop/articles/the-holy-grails/holy-grails-an-introduction/ but it's a very short strip so I doubt that's the one you mean.
Edit: Nevermind, there is a third part of the Famirii Konpyuuta da!! series where the blue disks are explained.

Yes more or less as a first release. The speech bubble on the back cover might need to be edited as well though. The other stuff on the front and back covers are not important though, I translated them just for completeness sake. Also the last pages still doesn't has page numbers.

Before printing it I have to warn you that it still has tons of mistakes and inconsistencies. When I started this project I had studied Japanese seriously for just a short while. When I translated the Family Basic manual I was more advanced, and finished it much faster even though it was much much bigger.

Probably sometime after 1986, since it mentioned the Disk System.
Title: Re: Famicom comic (1985) scanned
Post by: P on October 07, 2014, 12:57:25 pm
Since the copyright is labelled 85-10-21 it could have been bundled late 1985 as well. It's not strange that it mentions the disk system before it was released, it was planned from the beginning.

I heard that pin 46 in the cartridge slot (the extra audio pin) was initially added to be used by the future disk system (which it also was used for when it was released). Although it was later used by cartridges as well.

Any ideas when it was *stopped* being bundled? It seems there are less comics than one could expect. Maybe I'll have to start writing down when I get a console with the comic.

京都市 東山区 福稲上 高松町60番地 is the address of Nintendo's headquarters. It's read as "Kyoto-shi Higashiyama-ku Fukuinekami Takamatsu-chou 60-banchi".

野崎泰 is probably the author's name, and as I said, I don't know how it is read. It doesn't say anywhere how the name is supposed to be read, so there could be many possibilities.

Wow, 10 years. I wasn't even aware of forums back then! Time flies so fast. Those of you who were here back then (and even further back for those who set the bases for this place to exist) must have very fond memories of this site a decade or more ago. Long live the Famicom and its world! ;D
