Title: anyone collecting japanese game boy games?
Post by: fredJ on March 13, 2012, 05:54:39 am
I now have 465 games, of which 245 complete games.

The total number of jap game boy games, in my document, is 772 games.. There are probably a few I have missed. This only includes the original games , which are usually grey. No black carts, mainly because I find the text "Color" on the side to be ugly... and because they are often RPGs.

I think I will not focus so much on collecting them from now on... start to feel that I have enough.

Wow, that sounds like an awesome collection!

I collect a few, but mainly just the JP edition ones I really like as duplicates.

I'm after a reasonably priced loose Ninja Ryukenden actually.  Boxed go for a fair bit, but if a good opportunity came up...

The only Japanese Gameboy games I own are Zoids Densetsu and R-Type II. I hope to eventually buy more though.

I once had it loose, but at the time I thought my boxed Scandinavian edition should be enough.

Yes certain boxed games are quite expensive. I only have three boxed Rockman World games myself. Not that they are super expensive but I prefer to buy in lots so I can at least get my money back....

Some of them I like mainly for the artwork, such as Wizardry , Heiankyo Alien or Mercenary Force. There really is a lot of great artwork on the boxes... I could mention 50 others...

I got a JP Mercenary Force in a lot and really loved the artwork...
I was so pleasantly surprised when I played it for the first time - reminded me of Guwange!

I just bought the EU version today so that I can play through it in English.  The art is nonsensically ridiculous in comparison.

side note - do you know anyone that re-flashes gameboy games?
I'm getting a new flashcart but I'd like to patch a few JP games to their English versions...

Have my eyes on "For the Frog the Bell tolls", but if there is a rom for other rpgs such as Magic knight rayearth that would be sweet.

I just own JPN cart only versions of Super Mario Land, Parodius, SaGa 2, and the GB Color game Owarai Yowiko no Game Michi: Oyaji Sagashite 3 Choume, which I got in a lot and tried to play a little of (It does have a few fun mini-games). Is it based on an anime or something?

The only jpn gameboy game I own is Pokemon Green. If I find any other games for crazy cheap I may pick them up, but most games I want are cheap enough for North American copies.

I have quite a few, a lot of great GB games are Japan only. Among my favorites that I own are Shin Chan 4, Sailor Moon R, and Magical Taruruuto Kun.

I have about 55 games so far, cart only. There are alot of cool games released in japan that never hit the states. Even if they did, the artwork on the JP carts is SOOOOOOOOOOO much better IMHO.

I have the Tekkaman Blade GB game but just the cart i've kinda wondered what came in the box with it. I have the SNES Tekkaman blade game in the box with it's bits and bobs and i love it !!

I just inherited a crate of Famicom, SF, and Japanese Game Boy games for the guy I bought my systems from.  I was just about to fire up the Game Boy when I saw this thread.  I was never a big fan of the US version, but I thought I would give this one a go.  I may end up parting with it, but thought I should try it first.

The great thing about gameboys is they were never region locked so you could play the japanese games in ones that were sold outside japan! I have them ranging from the old brick type to my sexy metallic red DS lite and a few months back i scored a GB advance for $10 with a game though the battery cover is missing. I'd love to get a few more japanese games for them all and i'm curious if you can trade pokemon from the japanese games to the english games.
Title: Re: anyone collecting japanese game boy games?
Post by: Drakon on March 14, 2012, 08:32:37 pm
GB systems are stripped down and including region protection would only add more to the size of the system / carts as well as use a little more battery power.

doesn't seem to work

QuoteTrades between Pokémon games in different languages are possible in this generation; however, a Japanese game cannot connect with a non-Japanese game. The latter will always result in corruption if attempted. This is due to the fact that the games cannot automatically translate the Pokémon data from Japanese to a different language or vice versa, since there is not enough room on either cartridge for all of the text, namely kana and the Latin alphabet http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Red_and_Blue_Versions

Glad I got that answered myself, with all the pokemon games I sell...

Japanese GB mono that I own, off the top of my head:

SML2
Mario's Picross 2
Cave Noire
Star Sweep
Card Hero (black cart but works mono)
Tetris DX

I also own 3 SGB2 units and a bazillion USA GB mono games

The JP versions of Konami GB Collection are awesome, because they run on Super Gameboy! I have vol.3.

Super Game Boy > Game Boy Color ;D

Do the EU/NA ones not run?  I think I have about 3 of those black cart JP Konami collections...
Title: Re: anyone collecting japanese game boy games?
Post by: fredJ on March 29, 2012, 07:02:38 am
Yes the EU ones are black.
I have the Japan vol 2 and the games aren't too impressive on the Super Game Boy.  ???
I have vol 1. with Contra on it too, but can't find it at the moment.
The weird thing is that the games on JP and EU/NA are different. For example, the Japan vol. 2 was released in the EU as vol. 3.

But they are all worth getting, IMO. I only have the Japanese vol. 1 & 2 which I actually bought separately, because I couldn't find them in a game lot... and I wanted to play Contra, which I couldn't find either.  :D

As I don't play on them I might sell some of my multicarts.
I also have 3 Nintendo Power JP carts that I found you can reflash, so I'll get to play ZAS and Trip World that way I guess.

Are all the black carts EU versions?  I could've sworn I had a Japanese black cart or two.
Or am I getting mixed up and you simply mean the Konami multicarts are black in Europe?  Oddly, I got those from Japan in a lot
Title: Re: anyone collecting japanese game boy games?
Post by: fredJ on March 29, 2012, 08:17:57 am
Is is possible to reflash the white carts just as any flash other card? That's interesting. I have two of those.

I mean that the Konami Collection carts are black in Europe, released in 2000.
The Japanese Konami Collections were released in 1997 and are not black, not the ones I've seen. They could still have Super Game Boy support though. On Vol. 2, the intro and the game Guttang Guttong is in nice vibrant colors, but the other games are standard dull colors.

Post by: L___E___T on March 29, 2012, 09:47:47 am
Ah ok I get you.  I have a tendency to rad exciting news quickly :)

yes the white carts are reflashable with the right flashign equipment. You will of course, lose whatever data is on there.
I've not trried it myself, but I have a tatty one with some boring games on that I'm happy to erase, that are on other carts.
I'll probably make a new label for it and treat it as an official GB flashcart or something like that.

Heck I could stick a tatty label on and burn a proto or hack on there for uber bucks.  That's a joke of course.

You should get the classics ;)

L_E_T : Please let me know if you manage to flash your GB NP carts. I am reading about the SFC NP carts and doesn't seem anyone has flashed them. Correct me if I'm wrong....
Title: Re: anyone collecting japanese game boy games?
Post by: L___E___T on April 01, 2012, 01:50:39 pm
I need to find all my flasher tools etc but yes I'll definitely let you know.  I've not read that SFC carts can be flashed anywhere though.

Just found this:

"well the idea is to find a kind of home made transfer to flash this beauty. I discovered that the SMARTBOY cartridge transfer could synchronize with GBメモリ running an application called "Flash Manager"."

So, it seems it IS possible, but not something I've gotten round to yet.  I think it's only possibel with some EZ Writer software.  See here:
http://www.gameboycarts.com/2009/10/ez-writer-for-gb%E3%83%A1%E3%83%A2%E3%83%AA-it-would-be-this-first-personal-transfer-for-a-game-boy-memory-cartridge-who-knows/

Bit hard to follow, I don't have the energy right now!

just picked up Noobow, X, and FC Genjin 2, cant wait to try them out! Especially Noobow, I hear its quite a unique title. X is apparently the inspiration for the Star Fox games...

Yes I saw you got a Noobow. It was a nice find.  :D I don't have it myself, but some day maybe...
I never figured out how X worked (I don't like Star Fox either), and the slow moving FC Genjin (Gb Genjin?) isn't my kind of game, but definitely quality games both.  :D
X is probably one of the rarer GB games published by Nintendo.

Im mainly into Platformers and shooters. Some puzzle games....

Im just getting into the original GB system. Picked up "Burning Paper" today cause the label looked like a cool Rockman-esque platformer, turns out its a not as cool puzzle game.   ::)

puzzle star sweep is an amazing falling-well style game, done very very well, multiple modes, shares a programmer from panel de pon/tetris attack (ryuji kawaki). JP only.
there's a fansite here http://bankbank.net/starsweep

perhaps also try kirby star stacker, it has high production values (it's a nintendo 2nd-party developed game i believe) and is really cheap. not JP or Euro only though.

shooters i always hear people say "zas", think it's JP only. there are some really interesting euro-only platformers, amiga ports and the like. "the fidgetts" published by Jaleco might also have gotten a US release, but it's got euro written all over it.

p.s. i have heard people say good things about burning paper, been meaning to play it

Oh right, I thought you meant Mysterium for some reason.
It's still alright artwork, but Mysterium is much superior...

"Japan or Euro only games"? As in: not released in the US? Or you mean they have to be released in either Europe or Japan?
Most games not released in the US would probably qualify as being obscure, so it would be difficult to call them "must have" titles that few people know about.  I personally think most of my games are must have titles, so I don't know....

I just beat another game: Daiku no Gen-San: Robot Teikoku no Yabou, a game in the "Hammerin Harry" series. It was quite alright.

I only have a few. Around 30 CIB JPN gameboy games. Thought about going all out, but realized most GB games haven't aged well imho. So I decided to only pick up titles that really felt timeless in quality to me. I'd be more likely to go "hardcore" into japanese GBA games because they have a SNES/SFC quality to them.

Well here's the "crown jewel" of my boxed JPN gameboy collection so far:

Incidentally I picked up a loose cart of Noobow today, in a lot that should pay for itself. ( that's what I have to do ..)

What other timeless games do you have?

GBA is superior in many ways... but it doesn't have those simple charming games...

I only buy them in lots, but if you have money ( I don't) then I think you should buy them from me.  :D

Currently I am playing my games. Beat GB Genjin yesterday (boring.. where's the gameplay? )  and today the Japanese version of Maru's Mission, "Oira Jajamaru! Sekai Daibouken". They renamed him Maru for the US and gave it an embarassing game cover.

i was playing gb genjin yesterday! i'm a huge fan of the games on tg-16 (had a tg-16 and bonk1+2 as a kid), but yeah, the gb one doesn't seem as thrilling. it really needs those bright colors.

also, i'm just plain TIRED AS HELL of platformers. i still buy them constantly for GB, but i'm just sick of that perspective. i think that's one of my big criteria for whether i'll try out an unknown game or not: if it's overhead or puzzle-y, i want it, if it's platformer, unless it's gonna be really interesting, forget it.

Japanese Game Boy games are cool! I like how small the boxes are. I only have two as of right now, but I think it'd be cool to get some more Japanese-exclusive games that don't require much reading, as I'm sure there are a lot of them.

I currently own Crayon Shin-Chan 4 and Pokemon Green (both CIB). Shin Chan was a really fun platforming game, and I just recently got back into Green. I've got 5 badges and my entire party is level 40, and I can't read a lick of Japanese. ;D

...My only trouble is that my bag gets full a lot, so I find myself constantly on Bulbapedia looking at the Japanese names of items to see what I need to keep in my bag and what I can store in my PC. It's hard for some items that aren't key items since they're not usually listed in Japanese, so I still don't know what some of the stuff in my bag is...  :-\

That's interesting , people buy those pokemon games from me but I don't know whether they can play them. I can let them know it is possible...
I haven't gotten into RPGs myself, not even Zelda... it takes too long.. I did beat Sword of Hope when I was a kid though, took me forever.

Why they always buy Green? Green and Red were the twin games in Japan, but they had so many problems that they re-did it into the Blue version in Japan. Blue is the least common of the three.

weird. i know people love the 1st, so i was interested in the 2nd. but makes sense from the box art that it was converted to RPG style i guess.

i generally cant stand RPG (too boring to read the text). i did just buy all 4 FF GB (US) games, there's something interesting about pocket sized RPG.

sword of hope by kemco? i just received that.. i can't figure it out at all !!! seems kuso haha

why can't you figure out sword of hope? you level up, talk to the trees to get clue where treant is, defeat treant, get the key to go east...
I tried to play it recently, but forgot that if you fail stupid fairy questions, you need to go back to your last password because you can't move forward.

I actually have the Japan only Selection I + II, CIB. It's uncommon. I tried to sell it once, it but am now happy I have it.  :D

I really want a CIB Trip World - what am I REALISTICALLY looking at?

Lately I've been playing Gremlins 2, Robocop and Kirby 2 on my Gameboy Light.
Dragon Warrior 1+2 are also great on the GBA and improvements on the Famicom versions for sure (as is DW3), but they're not for everyone...

I need to get a copy of that; I have it on a multicart but on that it crashes after level 1. :'(

I think I have that same multicart!

Absolutely pick it up.  It's very polished and in my opinion is the best version of the game.  It has the full intro song, amazing BGM and SFX and even decent voice samples.  The difficulty is just right, unlike other ports, which seeem either too easy or too hard.  OK that could just be me.

It honestly feels like a modern demake, I like GB games because of the chiptunes and pixel art tricks.
The game design is just MADE for that system and it's the only version where Murphy can jump, which improves and adds to the gameplay actually.

Best of all you can pick it up real cheap on eBay if you want to, or flashcarts as they're relatively cheap.

Spoiler
Trivia - The full intro music (by renowned Jonathan Dunn) was used in this 'memorable' UK ad as well...

Yes it wasn't so expensive a few years ago. And I prefer to wait until it gets cheaper, if it ever does...

Incidentally I picked up a loose cart of Noobow today, in a lot that should pay for itself. ( that's what I have to do ..)

What other timeless games do you have?

GBA is superior in many ways... but it doesn't have those simple charming games...

GB games that I have Japanese CIBs of that I consider "timeless" or just like due to the nostalgia of having them as a kid are (off the top of my head):

All the ninja turtles games, all the castlevanias, both contras, snow brothers, both Demon's blazon/crest games, taro kun, double dragon, bionic commando, both gradius games, parodius, etc.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head. All japanese and complete in box.

You enter data into Nanonote, can create graphs etc... I have it CIB, and also some other utility programs, with which you can print stuff with your printer.

I tried out Robocop 2, and it kind of sucked. Haha.  ;D

Dodgeball was too difficult, lose a match and game over. Not very much fun.
The "olympics" one that starts with 400 meter is quite fun, I just need to practice a bit more. LOL @ sick events.  :D Is probably a fun 2-player game.

a few days ago i had the pleasure of playing a rather nice puzzle/platformer called Megalit

the purpose is to move the blocks down 'one level at a time'. if they fall more than 1 level at a time, they'll break.

i guess it's kind of a cross between daedalian opus and mario. the order in which you make your decisions is important, is this counting as N-Complete? or NP complete? i don't know these math terms properly, i need more information

GREAT music in this game. i played for about 30 minutes, which is a lot for me. then i put it in the shoebox.  :-[

I have counted there are circa 775 grey carts, that's what I care about.

I'm also somehow interested in other monster-collecting RPG games for GBC - Dragon Quest Monsters, Telefang, Bugsite, Card Hero, Space-Net, etc.  I'm also looking for the Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura games.

Okay, but it misses several games, such as "X" (mentioned earlier in this thread) and a few other. I couldn't find Hoshi no Kirby , which would be a weird omission.

I could also not find the Doraemon Study Boy games in it, there are six of those (or five at least), i.e. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Doraemon-no-Study-Boy-3-Gameboy-GB-GBA-JAPAN-IMPORT-JP-/130490754762

I went through every one of the non-color games in that book and wrote it down for my personal list... It took a long time.

get what you can find, a book just went for 75$ on ebay.. that's why I ask people in Japan to buy the literature for me.  ???

you could just buy from me database access of the games I compiled, if you are okay with only the grey carts.  :D For 5$ you will get the names in English and it includes many of the DMG codes...   8)

I suppose I could dump the contents of the CD too but I don't think the CD has much use. Perhaps to get the games in katakana for copy and paste.
funny thing with the cd is that it has links to where you can get the ROMs.
also i could mention there are similar books for famicom and sfc.

Nice GB haul!

I have a boxed and minty Hyperboy too - I think it's great actually, but rather than give it regular use, I want to make a 'proper' Gameboy, Famicom, Super Famicom and VirtualBoy arcade unit in the Summer.  Still not fully decided on what kit to use,  thinking of building it around a Wii, but a PC might be better.  Actually, if anyone has specific suggestions, I could use them.

Spoiler
Try the Hyperboy with a backlit Gameboy - it's great when you disable the light on it (The Hyperboy)!

That would be a cool project. Are you going for a full size arcade cabinet or a tabletop/bartop unit?

I would vote for a PC. It would imho be easier and much, much more flexible as to what it can do. Anyways if you want to play, you can emulate Wii on the PC via the Dolphin emulator.

I can vouch for fcgamer. A while ago I was also set up with a nice lot of gameboy unlicensed games for a great price. They were sold as non working or junk but after some cleaning, mostly all them work without a hitch. I have also bought games sold as new old stock and once again great prices. That doesn't include the freebie games I got a few times throughout basically a year when I bought solely off of him. All in all, one of the most trusted sellers.

I also love Japanese Game Boy stuff - in fact, as I type this I just got done playing Ninja Ryuukenden GB. Here's a shot of my collection, including GBC and GBA.

My favorites = Ninja Ryuukenden GB (of course), both Contras, both Bonks, Sumo Fighter, Super Mario Land 2, Castlevania II, and Wario Land. Oh and Wario Land 4 for GBA too... one of the few games I consider to be nearly perfect.

Japanese GB games are sweet. I'm glad this thread was revived so I could look through everyone's collections. Cool stuff. I love Japanese GB boxes a lot.

That said, I only have two myself. Both complete. I'm a huge fan of both series. I used to be far more into collecting than I am now, but I'm always open to finding new gems.

Wario Land 4 is an absolute masterpiece - I played it from launch when I got one of the first GBAs - had a blast playing that, Megaman Zero, and Astro Boy - I genuinely think the GBA is one of the best platforms to play Nintendo games on out of them all, just a stellar piece of kit and a rewarding one to collect for.

Nice finds Dork - love the Shin Chan games and the series in general :D  and I know what you mean about the JP GB games - generally the Japanese graphic design is leaps and bounds over 95% of what Nintendo of america produced.  That whole 'thing' is why I collect Famicom over NES to be honest.

I don't collect Japanese GB games, but I do collect Taiwanese ones.  I have a collection of around 120 different original (unlicensed) Taiwanese GB games.  To me, a lot of those games are actually of decent --> excellent quality, and there is just a unique flavor that can't be found in games from other regions.

Finally, a fellow Sumo Fighter enthusiast. :D Music for this game was made by Nobuyuki Shioda, the man behind Recca soundtrack.

Personally I like that unified label design which was used by Nintendo, Konami and some others for japanese GB games. It looks so cool when you put some games together. :star:
