Title: How popular are anime based games??
Post by: security16 on March 14, 2012, 12:52:12 am
Anime is how i kinda ended up being into all the japanese gaming and i was wondering how often you see anime games apart from the dragonball games going around. I've only seen Tekkaman blade for the superfamicom twice and bought it both times but the first one got lost in the mail  :o  :'( I've also been lusting after some of the sailor moon games too but i rarely see them but these days i rarely look!

What anime series games do you guys like??

Dragonball Z Super Butouden2. Still loving this fighter. It was one of the first jp. SNES roms i played.
I have the first Sailor Moon beat em up as PAL Version. It feels like the slowest beat em up i ever played, even for 50Hz^^ It's not a terrible game, but there are way better ones out there.
The Gundam "Federation VS anything" games on PS2 are pretty good. Levels can look a bit boring, but the MS are still more detailed than most in DW Gundam. They even have the original VAs and Federation VS Zeon introduced me to great songs like Ai Senshi and Meguriai^^
While I'm at it... the Blue Destiny series on Saturn plays fine and Battle Assault2 on PSX is a cool 1on1 Fighter.
And before I forget it, Magic Knight Rayearth for Saturn. This is how an Anime  ARPG should look and play like

There are tons of great anime-based games, here are a few of my personal choices.

Famicom: Ninja Hattori Kun, Hi No Tori, Musashi No Ken, Samurai Pizza Cats, Doraemon, Mitsume Ga Tooru, Macross
Dreamcast: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Game Boy: Sailor Moon R, Crayon Shin Chan (all 4 of them)
3DO: Sailor Moon (The fighting game, not sure it's full title), Yu Yu Hakusho
PS1: Tokyo Mew Mew, Tatsunoko Fight
PS2: Hokuto No Ken
360: Hokuto No Ken: Ken's Rage
Wii: Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom

Probably forgetting a lot, but those are just a few off the top of my head. I feel quite lucky and honored that many of my favorite animuz have worthy vidya gaem adaptations.

There were four hokuto no ken for the famicom alone, crayon shin-chan several games, doreamon was on all the nintendo consoles (several games), magic knight rayearth several games, Ranma ½ several games (mainly SFC), Yu Yu Hakusho several games (mainly SFC), Captain Tsubasa several games (mainly FC), Marmalade Boy two games (GB & SFC), Goldfish Warning! (GB & SFC) , Mobile Suit Gundam (too many to mention), Slam Dunk (SFC, GB..), 3×3 Eyes (FC), Heisei Tensai Bakabon (FC), Astroboy (FC & SFC)...

Most of them are of good quality, sometimes really good. Some have Japanese language though, and sport games are usually dated. The fighting games for SFC (Ranma, Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho) are of different quality. At least one of the DBZ games is considered really good. I think they kept on improving the games with every new game in the series. It's quite interesting to see Dragon Ball make it so strong on its own as a video game franchise. Not to mention the the Gundam games, I actually think the Gundam series have some of the best games overall for both FC, SFC and Game Boy.

This is, IMO, where the Japanese and American mentality showed itself. When the Americans made Simpsons games, quality certainly wasn't important. In order to make a good franchise-based game, they need to outsource it to a Japanese developer, such as Konami who made Turtles or Capcom who made Duck Tales.... The Americans would slip Turtles into obliviation by increasingly bad movies instead...

On the other hand I don't know what people see in the Sailor Moon games. They are like 15$ loose on eBay, but I don't think they are worth it based on gameplay.... they are of medium quality at best...

Not meaning to draw attention, but actually it's "anime-based games"  The games are based, or founded on anime.  Not the other way around.

I would count the Street Fighter Zero/Alpha series in this, as the anime was their direct inspiration for the project.  Though SFII was the inspiration for the anime...

The Dragon Ball games are usually crap yet people buy them in hope of being something "awesome", as for others, Naruto is quite popular but not sure it's too much.

One Piece is basically a Japan-exclusive, barely ever gets an international release. :(

A lot of my favourite japanese games use anime style graphics but the only game I play that's based off of an anime is....astro boy omega factor?  I was into both gaming and anime before I was old enough to even realize they both came from a different country...and also both came from the same country.

*edit*

oh yeah I also play jojos bizarre adventure.

There's a nice Rayearth RPG for the Super Famicom.
And the Sailor Moon games aren't bad either.

Wii's also got Crayon Shin-chan, and for older Nintendo consoles, Doraemon, Dr. Slump and lots of other anime games that never got a release outside Japan. :-(

They are super popular and Id say like 50% of all games for every Japanese system is based off of an anime. Heres some franchises that have games on NES, Famicom, and SFC/SNES: Cyborg 009, Doraemon, Urusei Yatsura, Shin Chan, Umihara Kawase, Tekkaman Blade, Yattaman, Ushio to Tora, Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Tarzan Jungle no Ouja, Samurai Pizza Cats, Ossu Karate-Bu, Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Saint Seiya, Hello Kitty, Dr. Slump, Dragon Quest (although this was a game first, then the Anime came along with the release of part 3), Batsu & Terry, Every version of Gundam ever created........plus 100s more.

It's either:
- Kureyon Shin-chan (Japanese title)
- Crayon Shin-chan (International Title 1)
- Shin-chan (International Title 2)

Just "Shin Chan" doesn't relate much to Shin-chan, and the C isn't in capital letter. Ya' probably know that.
