At first I didn't honestly like the name "Wii U" but after seeing more of Wii U hardware itself my opinion changed about it, the Pro Controller looks to be awesome, the graphics of Wii U that I watched via Nintendo's E3 with 720p HD quality video rip didn't look much better than Xbox 360's or PS3.

But personally, the graphics that Xbox 360 and PS3 have right now are more than what I always wanted so I'm not one to complain, plus New Super Mario Bros U will make great use of the Wii U technology.

You know, the title "New Super Mario Bros U" made me think that the U was going to let the player have his/her own avatar playing on the game the whole time, like Wii & Xbox 360 games allow to do so.

Hm... I want to be excited, but somehow I'm not.  :-[
I guess I'm not so much into home consoles any more.

I have a few consoles connected, but the only one I use regularly is my Twin Famicom.  :mario:

I think the graphics are okay. Heck, I find Wii graphics good!  I'm totally satisfied with anything in this compartment.

I think this is the first Nintendo console I don't see a reason to pick up.  New SMB U looks good, but really I'm ok to miss it if it comes at a $100 cost, let alone $300 cost.

Maybe cool for anyone without a 360 / PS3, but when you can pick up a 360 for under $100, I don't see the allure and my personal view is that they're missing the point with it.  I'm just not excited and let's face it, not a lot of us have hundreds to spare these days...

I'm not really excited, to me it's all about the games, and so far the only stuff that is interesting is New SMB and Pikmin 3, neither of which are system sellers to me.

I think I'm a bit jaded after buying both the 3DS and Vita at launch. I don't regret either, but the first year with only a couple of good games sucked. Thr 3DS has a good selection now, but the Vita has little new on the horizon.

am I excited?  About as excited about the 3ds!......which isn't a whole lot.  Having a great system means NOTHING if there isn't any great games to play on it.  I thought people learned that lesson from all the failed systems of console past.  For all I care the graphics and sound can look like an atari 2000 just as long as the game is fuuuuuuuuuun!

I'm not super-excited, but I'll probably get it near-launch anyway.  I like the idea of being able to play the console games on the pad.  I can play on the TV for a while, and when my wife wants to watch TV, I can switch to the pad ;D

But I agree, nothing really jumps out as a must-have feature.  At this point, I'm most looking forward to various asymmetric multiplayer games.  Pac Man VS is awesome, so more games along those lines would be great.

Well isn't that why we still play the great classics from the past? They are and will always be fun to come back to. If there are only Nintendo titles coming out for this "new" console then I'm going to skip on it. I miss the SNES days where there was amazing third party support...just amazing! Same with NES! What happened to those days!!!

The Wii U GamePad on E3's Nintendo video conference looked so damn big, seriously, it reminded me of Sega GameGear.

If I were to play Wii U it'd definitely be with Wii U Pro Controller!

I can't say I'm excited.  I'm more concerned that this will hurt Nintendo, to be honest.  The tablet controller gimmick will, I believe, spawn tons and tons of shovelware- uninspired shovelware that will not be so far removed from $1 iPod/iPad/Android apps that you don't need to bother looking up from your controller to play and you save +$50.  I don't doubt there will be a worthwhile game or two that does something nifty with the new format.  I just hope a day will come again when video games for Nintendo systems will no longer revolve around the latest gimmick/angle that they pull out of their less than inspired magician's hat.

Also, I tire of Mii/super family friendly crap themed games.  An occasional rockin' Wario Ware mingame fest is a good thing.  A ton of poorly conceived and equally poorly executed minigame collections is not.  I suppose it could be worse (i.e. infested with FPS games).   ;D

With all of that said, I hope the system rocks and there are many, many memorable games that come out for it.

Meh, I think they'll pull through. Every system, home or handheld, since N64 has been "OMG THE END OF NINTENDO!!!11!1".

The games shown so far haven´t exactly impressed me. So far, Wii U feels like a console for Nintendo loyalists. And... I am one of them  :-[

From a technical standpoint I find the machine kind of embarassing. It seems like Nintendo are going to sell me 6 years old graphics chips again. And the name is ridicolus.

Lego City Undercover seems surprisingly appealing. Could be a very fun tounge in cheek adventure. The new "New" Super Mario Bros seems kind of lazy at first glance. Same old, higher resolusion. Even music seems to be recycled. I fail to see why littering the map with "twitter" messages would make it a fresh experience.

No doubt there WILL be killer apps in the future (Retro Studios still haven´t revealed their project) but the launch lineup isn´t very strong. Rayman Legends will be awesome though  ;D

Price tag concerns me a great deal.  I'll skip this and save for the next Sony / Microsoft offering.  Will buy a new 3DS when it comes out though, especially if they do a VirtualBoy edition :D

Well, Nintendo´s official price tag has yet to be set. So we´ll just have to wait and see. 3DS is a fun machine though, so good luck with that!

EDIT: Oops, I incidently wrote "has been set" which is completely wrong  :-[

Not really. Wii U is aimed towards at all hardcore gamers from Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony, note that Nintendo has upgraded their hardware to keep up with X360 and PS3, and the games too, more variety too now on a Nintendo console.

Though, I sure hope the Wii U game covers aren't like this on pre-order for AC3 Wii U.

http://www.shopto.net/WII%20U/VIDEO%20GAMES/WIIUAS01-Assassins%20Creed%203.html

Something more like the GameCube or Xbox 360 design cover with the Wii U logo at the top and whatnot looks better than this.

Upgrading to keep up with consoles that are already out of date isn't really aimed at everyone though is it to be fair...
So, I would definitely say it's aimed at loyalist so far.  3rd party games are already out on existing, cheaper consoles.

Don't worry, that's just placeholder boxart they give out to everyone so that they'll get the pre-order pages up for those games.
If you look carefully, you'll see it's pretty botched anyway, they're just doing the best with what they've got.

I don't see the point to have something too much powerful. Ok games like Uncharted looks good. But you are just following a path, there's many many cutscenes and you can finish it very quickly (= no replay value, not enough gameplay). Which is very bad for a game (and I guess the last of us will have the same problem)... And it is going to be the same with next Sony system I guess, all money on power and nothing on improvement.
Title: Re: Excited about Wii U?

Yeah I know what you mean, but if you're always a generation behind it means that the best 3rd party developers do exactly that - leave you behind.
Title: Re: Excited about Wii U?
Post by: MasterDisk on June 12, 2012, 10:39:08 am
Well we're not that behind now. WiiU is more powerful than PS3 (it seems from the games, and these are launch games so it'll be much better in the future). So I guess it'll be ok this generation. Trying to do stuff too much powerful is killing video game business. As cost of developement explode completly, only very big studios will be able to develop on the next system (if the PS4/720 are very powerful)

That´s just what I worry about. And while the graphics will be okay for "this" generation, a new generation is likely to take within 2 years from now (nothing confirmed of course, but Sony & Microsoft are likely to confirm new hardware next year).

The therory that only bigger studios will be able to afford development may be true to some extent, but the same was said about PS3 and Xbox 360 versus Wii. In the end most major third party developers moved over to Sony and Microsoft, likely because their games didn´t sell nearly as good as Nintendos own games for the Wii.

This is already true and has been for quite some time.  This is something I know a lot about and is actually a big part of my job.  It's a difficult scenario.
Games cost a heck of a lot of money to make, even for 3DS and this has fuelled games platforms like the appstore and Android, facebook etc.

To me, the concern is that a new system that's essentially competing with an old system, at a higher price is instantly not competitive.
I really want a WiiU because I love Nintendo, but I'm really struggling to justify it.
Title: Re: Excited about Wii U?
Post by: crade on June 14, 2012, 12:11:11 pm
I wish they wouldn't try to compete against Ps3 and xbox by basically saying they are finally able to run the same games..  It makes them sound pathetic imho.. lol
Nintendo needs to focus more on the retro experience and their virtual console and wiiware stuff... Thats where their strengths are (that and in milking old franchises)
Bragging about how they finally going to put out something that competes with the others old hardware is definately not going to impress me or make me want to buy...

WiiWare isn't in a good place though - XboxLive on the other hand...   Basically one makes money and one doesn't.

I nearly pre-ordered it today through Amazon UK though, just cos it was £200 - but they closed the link and started cancelling pre-orders because of the price guarantee.   :(

I wish I was but I definitely am not. First of all I hate the name of the console so much that it alone turns me away. I don't even like saying it. It sounds like a college where you can learn how to use a wiimote.

The thought of first party Nintendo games in HD isn't even enough to make me want to buy it and I think it's because I am still so happy with the Wii. I could play Skyward Sword, Super Mario Galaxy and Kirby's Epic Yarn over and over again, not to mention all of the games I've yet to get to.

Can't wait for Kirby's Dream Collection  ;D

As IBM said, the WiiU will have a POWER7 processor. Which is much more powerful than a cell and a xenon. Don't know for graphic card but it'll either be one in the 4800 series or a 6670, both more powerful than the ones in PS360. No reason to be scared about the power of the Wii U  :D

Oh, I see..  I was thinking more that it would be like the wii in that it would be underpowered compared to it's competitors, which should be the the PS4 and Xbox whatever, not the old stuff.

I'll buck the trend and say that I'm excited   ;D  I actually went over to Gamestop yesterday and pre-ordered another game, Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed.  So that, along with Nintendoland and New Super Mario Bros. U makes three launch titles for me.  I also have Lego City: Undercover pre-ordered, although I'm considering changing my pre-order to Wal-mart, as they're offering a free Lego character there.  I'll wait and see a little longer if anywhere else ends up offering a bonus.

I know that Wal-mart had opened up some extra Wii U pre-orders if you do it through their layaway program.  That might be worth checking out.

By the way, when I went to GS yesterday, they had a Wii U kiosk set up, and I gave Rayman Legends a whirl.  A couple of impressions:

- The Wii U Gamepad is much lighter than I was expecting.  I rather expected something as heavy as a Kindle Fire or an iPad, if you're familiar with those, but it's barely heavier than an Xbox or PS3 controller.  I was pretty shocked.

- The graphics look great (at least on Rayman).  It certainly blows away the Wii, and it's at least on par with the current gen.

- Using the touchscreen on the Gamepad is going to take a little getting used to.  That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's still worth noting.  I had a couple points in the demo where I stopped and wondered what to do next, only to realize 10 seconds later that, "Oh yeah, I have another screen to check!"  Sure enough, the touchscreen was waiting for me to do something.  It's neat, but at the same time, until I get used to moving my eyes around, there going to be some interruption in gameplay flow.  However, the game mechanics employed on the Gamepad's touchscreen were worth the interruption, because it was really cool to do something on there and have its effects instantly reflected on screen.  I didn't notice any latency issues at all.

I'll probably pick up the games first and then get the unit when it becomes more readily available(when I can just walk into the store and pick one up like I can a current system). This way, I can build up a library so when I DO have the system, I have games ready to go.

I was not really excited for wii u, but I can honestly say that I like my basic set. I did not pre-order and found one on the shelf at walmart on 11/22. I did not leave the store with it that day. I kicked my self later for this. I went back on 11/24 and they still had the two basic sets on the shelf. After the battle of tracking down some one that was working in electronics I walked out with my new wii u. I was so excited.

edit: I was just at said walmart and they had 2 deluxe wii u's and 1 basic.

You don't know how much I'd pay for this.
