Anyone here like anime? some good ongoing shows im watching right now are
Jigoku Shoujo and its second season Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori
and
Death Note
those are pretty good, i know there's lots of others airing now but thats what i've been watching recently.
what do you guys like?
Of course I like anime.
I like Bleach for example. Very funny and well thought anime.
Apart from that I'm really into Studio Ghibli films like "Tonari no Totoro", "Sen to Chihio no kamikakushi", "Neko no ongaeshi" and the likes. Those are great.
And a secret tip from me: Try to find "Haunted Junction" and "Kacho Oji". ;)
I'm into Studio Ghibli films as well; saw Howl's Moving Castle not too long ago - it was nice but didn't compare to Sen to Chihiro in my opinion.
No, I don't like anime or manga. I'm a Marvel Comics guy!!!
I don't like Anime and mostly I hate Otakus or people obsessed with anime. I'm a captain tsubasa, Saint Seiya fan, the common stuff. I hate when otakus talk and talk and don't shut up about tons of series that are dumb or dumber than US/European cartoons. For me watching cartoons or animation stuff doesn't care where they belong, if the serie is good, it's enough for me.

Hey hey, I don't like otakus that do nothing but talk about anime and break it down into tiny bits and pieces where the show isn't fun to watch anymore. But for the general consensus, they aren't bad people.
I'm obsessed with anime. Does that mean you hate me? =p
Seriously, there aren't many US cartoons that are worth watching nowadays... I swear Spongebob kills me braincells... I can't stand that show and dislike it with a passion.
But back to anime. For the topic of Bleach, the show is kinda like DBZ. The battles aren't drawn out as long, but the series is a long one. They're currently in the 120's episode-wise in Japan and I have no clue what they're on in the States since I don't keep track. I'll admit it is funny, but well thought is going to go downhill once you hit the fillers... Eventually it will get better.
As for Death Note, it is another enjoyable series. It can get boring at times and they really add a lot of drama for certain simple events (ex: eating a potato chip). The mental game and the characters are the strong points of the show. It just is one of those shows that makes you question your values at times, and it keeps you hooked with that "fantasy" element that keeps anime unrealistic.
The rate I'm going, I'll turn this post into an essay... So I'll just tell you guys what I'm currently watching that I highly recommend for anyone else to watch. Naruto Shippudden, D. Gray Man, Gigantic Formula, Nodame Cantabile, sola, Darker than Black, Claymore, Hayate no Gotoku, Bleach, Death Note, and Reideen. Long list eh?
Well I hate people who is obsessed with anything. Can be cars, dark music, violence, internet. Obsessions aren't good.
I found this weeks death note episode very lame. this is the only ep i havent enjoyed
I like 80's stuff (hokuto no ken)
And I've watched every episode of Slam Dunk which was awesome. Even read the fan translated manga.
Slam Dunk is great.
I have the complete Japanese manga series. 8)
I also downloaded the anime series the last day, but haven't wantched all of it yet, only a few episodes.
Slam Dunk is really funny and highly recommended. ;D
if we're talking about stuff from the 80s, i have to admit i find the earlier gundam series highly entertaining. but then in the late 90's they decided to bastardize it with that gundam wing crap that i hate.
They were dubbing it in the states (Slam Dunk that is) and got as far as ep 20 I think before the series was discontinued. But its such a great series. The manga goes even further than the series, I'm sure you know that though. Too bad there might never be a second part!
[insider tip]Try to find the subtitled videos of Slam Dunk.[/insider tip]
How about Elven Lied?
I watched it and it's a good anime.
I'm personally a HUGE fan of Detective Conan/Case Closed.

me too I think they are coming out with new dvds hopefully or else I'll have to download the anime via torrents
My wife and my wife's mother (!!) also like Derective Conan.
If you are in Japan, I have another recommendation:
Kaiketsu Zorori.
A very funny children's anime.

Which are some of your favorite anime series right now or some good ones you seen in the past?
For me I love Naruto and Bleach right now but I used to like DBZ and Saint Seya. Also the gundam series were alright.
Well, three of them are like "wowwwwww" for me, in the past I used to collect the figures and books about them :
Saint Seiya
Captain Tsubasa (my fav.)
Dragon Ball Z
And very very close...Slayers.
Yeah Captain Tsubasa was awesome. They should dub it and show it in the states.
Series:
Slam Dunk
Fushigi Yuugi
Movies:
My Neighbor Totoro
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
you mean spirited away en englais
My favorite is Kino no Tabi or FLCL. Number three is probably Mai Hime/Mai Otome.
Galaxy Angel is always fun to watch, too.

That's right. I tend to forget the English title sometimes. :-[
Anime...
I like Yamato!
Very much!
The last Anime that I saw was Noir.
Very nice!
The next I'm going to see is Wolf's Rain.
Series:
Detective Conan/Case Closed
Cowboy Bebop
Yu Yu Hakusho
Movies:
My Neighbor Totoro
Akira
wow forgot of all those series you guys mentioned well there are some that were kinda weird like boobooobooobooooooo somthing like that lol
Ah! Tenjou Tenge is very cool also!
uchuu senkan yamato!

Well, kinda... The series was more focused in the past than the present once you hit half-way or so in the anime. The manga I've heard is much better. If you like fights and animated chicks, I guess this would be one for you.
As for me, I'm currently following "Clannad" and "Mobile Suit Gundam 00." I have a bunch more, but I won't bore you with the details.
What does everyone prefer? Subs or dubs?
It depends on the situation, but I almost always prefer subs.
I'm currently watching Genshiken 2, Minami-ke, and Mushi-shi.
I'm currently watching RockMan EXE Stream
Kite200's 2007 highly recommended list:
Death Note (10/10, great series, falls apart a bit second half but still great)
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (11/10 If you haven't watched it, stop reading this and download it now)
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai (sequel to first one)
Darker Than Black (8/10 Good show, the plot is almost non existent at times)
these are the 2007 "Must Watch" shows according to me.
EXTRA RECOMMENDATION FOR MANUEL (still part of the must watch technically):
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
The reason I don't recommend this for everyone is because most of the humor is uniquely Japanese. Half of the humor comes from the crazy character names. The main character is called
糸
色
望
if you write it horizontally though there is quite a problem
糸色望
.......
and his brother also suffers the same fate. added humor because he is a doctor
糸
色
命
糸色命
:D Ain't that a nice name for a doctor! ;D
Thanks for the recommendation. I like that kind of humor and play on words.
I'll look for that one. Seems interesting the way you describe it.
....
It seems there are several groups releasing it. Can you recommend one? (It seems hard to get all the RAWs, because there are almost no seeders for them :( )
ah, I recommend a.f.k for the subs.
once you get to episode 12 the only way to watch it is the raw with the .ass file over at tokyotoshokan
anyway, watch the show, it's great
I wouldn't need subs, but I don't mind if there are any.
I always try to find divx or xvid files that are encoded properly so I can watch them on my dvd player and not on the PC.
Many groups out there use weird codecs (matroska and the likes) that my player won't play and I'd have to watch it on my tiny screen here. :)
I gathered some info on the anime and it surely looks promising. My wife said if the anime is good she wants to buy the manga next year after we moved.
you might want the subs in a few cases because there are some really strange words they use like
hikikomori
which I didn't know what it was until a few days ago.
most of it is pretty simple though, so most of the time you can ignore the subtitles.
a.f.k is avi so easy to put on DVD
I don't mean to brag ... well, a little bit ;) ... but my hearing comprehension and vocabulary of Japanese is quite good. At least that's what all my teachers and professors told me. ;D
I also wrote a little essay on hikikomori in 2003 for a class in Kyushu University. ;)
Most of the time I don't need subtitles. Should there be a word I don't know I have a good dictionary that is my wife. :D
Even on DVD I watch all the Japanese stuff without subtitles, because that is the best training. It's not good to rely on subtitles.
I also regularly watch rakugo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakugo ) which is considered very hard for learners of the language, because of the subtle humor that is often hard to pick up.
yeah I don't think I could understand rakugo.
I have a pretty easy time with Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei because the dialogue is pretty easy aside from a few strange words.
The video / audio quality of the a.f.k releases are what really make them good, though
Yes, I've finally downloaded the first episode. (It sucks to have a slow connection :( )
So far it's very interesting, so I'll be downloading the rest as well. Thank you for introducing me to a new anime I didn't know! :D There are so many mediocre anime, which makes it hard to find the good ones without recommendations.
My fav anime:
Azumanga Daioh
Comic Party
Cowboy Bebop
FLCL
Full Metal Panic
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
Love Hina
Mobile Suit Gundam
Read or Die (OAV, haven't watched the series yet)
Trigun
Although I tend to like almost any kind of anime (even giant mecha occationally though I think its way overdone) my favorites are comedy/etchi and serious drama.
A few series I saw that are defenetly helarious:
Green Green
2x2=Shinouden
Love Hina
By far the most beatufiully animated, well thoguht out, and thought provoking series I can recommend
Cardcaptor Sakura
Rozen Maiden
Kimi Ga Nazmou Eien (renamed Rumbling Hearts in the west)
Haibane Renmei
My favorite stuff is from the 80s and early 90s.
Give me Touch, Maison Ikkoku, Yawara, Creamy Mami, Saint Tail, Rose of Versailles or Dragon Ball (before all the super 9 million power level screaming stuff) and you can keep your Narutos and your CGI and the whatever shows are popular now.
I miss the 80s.
The manga i read now:
Eyeshield 21 Favorite now 8)
HunterxHunter Also serious shit
Black cat
20th century boys :D
One piece
Ive got 8 copies of the naruto series but ive quited cos i cant take the mega conversations :(
My fav's are:
legend of the Overfiend parts 1 & 2
Dominion Tank Police series -
and some of the Bubble Gum Crisis.
Semi-related here, is anyone here a meganekko fan?

Yeah, I watched that once or twice in Japan. I don't remember it too well, though. :-[
To revive this thread, I've recently seen the second OVA series for the wonderful wonderful Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (君が望む永遠 for manuel XD) If you guys are at all interested in drama, this is highly recommended. KGNE deals with real life and real situations. It could just as well be live action. Funny thing is, its based on a ho-hom pc hentai game, but the show itself has nothing to do with that, it isn't even ecchi. It's been released in the west as Rumbling Hearts, which is the name of the PC game's theme song.
KGNE is a heartfelt series about love, trust, friendship, betrayal, and downright simple emotional stress and pain. It plays out like a daytime soap opera meets anime meets good
I highly highly recommend you guys check it out.
Anyone watch Kidou Senshi Gundam? If not, and you want to watch a subbed version... PM me. I am in love with this series. Sure, the animation's kind of primitive, but it was the 70's. It's just got a certain charm to it. The original mobile suits were the best, I think. They were imaginative. Now, they just see how many spikes they can fit on a mobile suit while still being able to fit someone in it. ZIEG ZEON

You watched the live action Death Note movie?
I don't get to watch too much anime series. We do keep anime movies such as Vampire Hunter D (old one) and VHD Bloodlust in rotation...and Wicked City on rare occasions.
I took a chance on a limited series called "Reign: the Conqueror" which is a new spin on Alexander the Great, and was thoroghly entertained. Made by the same folks who did Aeon Flux.
My buddy has quite a collection of "La Blue Girl" :-X
Any of the Minami-ke series are good. It reminds me of Azumanga Daioh for some reason.

Heh, I remember when Adult Swim showed Reign. They got so many complaints about the guys in skimpy clothing and homoeroticism (it's such a double standard!). I thought it was pretty interesting -- but I like Aeon Flux, too, despite how confusing the series can be.

Bleh.

Minami-Ke, FLCL, Cyborg 009, and that one about the 'Host Club' thing at some high school.
I like cyberpunk and ultra-violent 80s anime myself, Megazone 23, cyborg 009, Cyber City 808, astro boy, bubblegum crisis, AD police, wicked city, monster city, guyver old + new, basilisk, ninja scroll, anything Shirow Masamune - the list could go on and on!
I'm not all keen on modern teen (naruto/bleach) and 'romantic' anime - I find it all too silly, but the naruto books are good.

Oh yeah I got tons more faves but as for Akira, I actually prefer the movie to the book. Though the book has some amazing illustrations in, I just thought the story went on for way too long. It's like one big digression!
I also prefer the movie to the manga when it comes to Akira.
In the movie it's the great music and sound in general that makes the difference.
things like the fluidity of the smoke animations, the tail lights on the bikes, along with the music none of that rythum comes across in the manga of course. Having said that none of the linework from the manga really comes across in the movie and in colour of course.
If you really like it you need to consume and enjoy both the manga and anime anyways.
Did you enjoy Freedom? I liked the story but the cel shaded visuals were a bit, um, Phillips CDI...

Um.
I think Neon Genesis Evangelion is the best anime I've ever watched. And the movie. I know Tyler and John have heard me obsessing over it for forever. Anyone else here watch it?
I watched it a while ago. I've been meaning to rewatch it, but the DVDs never go on sale.
I watched the movie. It's amazing. I haven't watched the series in a really long time, so I don't really know any of the characters, but it was still amazingly awesome.
Yeah. The movie is just the amazing conclusion to the psychological odyssey of the original series.
(NOT A HINT)
But I do recommend the original series. It's not too long, and is amazing. It manages to be way more sophisticated and thought-provoking than other animes, behind the whole "GIGANTIC MECH" facade.
I don't know that I'd call it "sophisticated and thought-provoking". Personally, that's how I'd describe a good dramatic anime. Eva is a mindfuck anime. It exists just to confuse the viewer as much as possible. It gets you talking and theorizing, sure, but it doesn't mean anything in the end.
There are some animes I like. My top 3:
1. BoBoBo BoBoBoBo
2. Crayon Shinchan
3. Super Milk Chan
I like funny anime. ;D
My top 5 series in no particular order:
- Guyver 2005
- Freedom
- Bubblegum Crisis + AD Police
- Testsuwan Atom
- Megazone 23 (OVA)
I like robots, ninjas and monsters!

You're probably right, but I've only seen like five series in their entirety, most of which were mindless shonen anime.
I didn't like Evangelion at all personally. I though the Patlabor movies and Shirow Masamune creations were much more elevated.
I saw the Jin Roh movie (Mamoru Oshii) recently and was really taken with it.
I haven't watch animae in over a year... what's wrong with me? I guess collection Famicom games have detracted me.
I'm slowly working my way through Hyakko. Also started watching Robotech: The Macross Saga on Hulu, which is apparently a strange combination of three different Japanese series blended into one.
I'm gonna buy My Neighbor Totoro next time I go to this otaku store in Omaha. It seems really comical, and even though I found the movie online, it has an ugly watermark, and it's in Swedish. >_>
Studio Ghibli makes good stuff.
On wednesday I had a snow day, so I spent it watching all thirteen episodes of Serial Experiments Lain. It was worth it.
I've watched Lain about three times since it came out.........................and I don't seem to understandddddddddddddddddddddd ::)
HAR HAR
Cowboy Bebop is pretty bitchin'. I'm almost done with it.
Hmmmm what's this?
This is the second time this has happened. In Guyver they all sit round "to play some video" and it's a full Fami-FDS set up and everything!
The above is Deburuman by the way.
I used to like it, now I hate it...
Some years ago I grown tired of seeing the japanese releasing the SAME stuff (mostly crap, BTW) over and over again (come on, you know it's true, they ran out of fresh ideas and just keep copying themselves). The whole anime industry is just a big disappointment to me.
Now, the only "massive" japanese animations I care about are Studio Ghibli's movies (I even have the Mononoke Hime laserdiscs), and some from a couple of others directors (I love Satoshi Kon's movies).
I'm eager for the upcoming bluray releases of Ghibli's films. At least I managed to get Cagliostro and Howl on HD some years ago (hehe ;D)
Grab Iblard Jikan if you haven't already, it's HD-designed and superbly beauiful.
I know what you mean though. Unfortunately it's a cultural thing, the Japanese have a tendency to withdraw into any popular element and dwell on it. It's not the same as milking an idea but I have to agree that anime now is not what it was 20 years ago. To me it's lost all the zest and creativity it had - this is really clear in remakes like the Bubblegum Crisis remake for example.
Miyazaki is different because he is a story teller not a gimmick seller, but I'm fed up of seeing schoolgirls with green hair and a sword telling us all about the boy they like that won't notice them or some shit like that.
I love Initial D! If you guys haven't seen that, I highly recommend it. If you do decide to try it out then go with the original Japanese collection (with Engrish subtitles) because the Americanized versions really suck!
I hate how adult swim took naruto out and one piece out, there is also a crappy Sunday line up and no amine during the week... Totally depressing if you ask me.
Yeah, One Piece is really... weird, but funny.

I usually read manga (mostly in original japanese),
but when i do watch anime i watch
One Piece, Lupin III (the newer tv specials), and Detective Conan.

Haha, which theme?
Running in the 90s. It's my ringtone whenever someone calls me. :D
I love anime, thank god it exists, I hate the crappy cartoons from foreign countries, they're watchable.
This is what I watch or completed:
- 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother (Marco)
- 80 Days Around the World With Willy Fog
- Afro Samurai
- Banner Tail - The Story Of Gray Squirrel
- Capeta
- Cowboy Bebop
- Desert Punk
- Digimon Adventure
- Dogtanian and The Three Muskehounds
- Dragon Ball
- Dragon Ball GT
- Dragon Ball Z
- Hungry Heart Wild Strikers
- Kino no Tabi - The Beautiful World
- Koi Kaze
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- One Piece
- Soul Eater
- Shigurui
- The Three Musketeers
- Tom Sawyer
I'm a Dragon Ball fan, but very disappointed with Dragon Ball Kai, it wasn't what I expected to see on TV. Hope in a few several years do a proper transfer from Dragon Ball Z - SD quality to HD quality.
And if anyone thinks that I didn't saw the Japanese Blu-Ray quality of the DBK's is wrong, I did, and they.. Not to my expectations.
Damn it, quite a lot of bad transfers that Blu-Ray has, FUNimation did Claymore on Blu-Ray and that looks just like DVD quality, although it's cheaper and in the new format but it kills a person who wants proper quality.
mine are ikki tousen, koi koi 7, and original pokemon
My favorite is Kino no Tabi (Kino's Journey), followed closely by FLCL
Lucky Star.
Princess Mononoke
and the opening song from Lucky Star !!! :D
Bubblegum Crisis, AD Police (80s versions, modern are ass)
Guyver
Laputa
Astro Boy
Ninja Scroll
Basilisk
Ghost in the Shell (movie - SAC is overrated)
Hokuto no Ken
...actually, I thought there was already an anime topic - this should be merged, ideally

You guys better be picking some good ones. :D I'll need to check some of these out when the anime convention I'm at starts at noon. I've already been to the dealer room and there's boxes and boxes of stuff. I might be able to find some DVDs or something...
For comedy, I like Shin-Chan and Sgt. Frog. For actual anime, I guess Neon-Genesis Evangelion and Death Note. I don't watch a whole lot of it.
If you are looking for something interesting, Angel beats - series is cool, and pretty new (2010) so the animation is worth seeing.
Kimagure Orange Road
Fullmetal Alchemist
Macross (NOT Robotech)
Hunter X Hunter
Now and Then, Here and There
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Dragon Ball (all of the series)
Mobile Suit Gundam (original)
Vision of Escaflowne
Urusei Yatsura (so far, haven't watched a lot yet)
There's a ton more but the list would go on for a while, lol. I've been watching anime for about 10 years now, and now I've gotten my wife into it so I can go back and rewatch shows I've seen with a fresh perspective (along with watching new ones I might have otherwise skipped). So far it's been a lot of fun. Right now we're almost done with Evangelion, and next we're probably going to watch the first season of the original Dragonball. Should be a good time :D.
Oh, and English voice actors still suck for the most part. It took me a long time to talk my wife into watching shows with subtitles on, lol. Now she prefers it, too. I had only seen Evangelion in the dubbed version before, and watching it in Japanese is a very different experience. Shinji actually comes off as a much more stable boy than the English voice actor makes him out to be.
ALSO, if ANYONE has the URUSEI YATSURA boxsets from Animeigo, please PM me! I've been looking for them for a while and would love to pick them up (especially the earlier sets).

I could just as easily say that Mario is a game about jumping on turtles.
But anyway, topic on hand:
Initial D, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Great Teacher Onizuka, Hajime no Ippo, Azumanga Daioh, Genshiken, Love Hina, Lucky Star, School Rumble
Many more too, I just can't think of any at the moment.

I don't watch a whole lot of it.
check for any ikki tousen stuff its a really really good anime

Ikki Tousen = Erotic anime. Not in to that sort of thing.
And yeah, I went as Jigglypuff. :D Me, my cousin and one of the friends friends all went as Pokemon, and the other friend went as a Tonberry from Final Fantasy (with tail!)
I will not believe you without pictures to prove it :D
I have only one as of right now. and I'm not really doing anything. Just playing Rock Band in my costume. :D When we get home my friend will upload all of the pictures...and he's got a lot. I'll post the picture I have right now, and then when I get the better ones, I'll edit this post.

Jigglypuff wears shorts and sandals!
Jigglypuff would so be on vocals. Way to not stay in character ;)
Oh believe me, that was brought up. The guitar was the last instrument I played. I started out by singing like three songs and then moved on to bass and then to guitar.

and a tiny little bit of Hamtaro, like the song
i started watching Shuffle! and its quite funny for a harem/ecchi type
Am i the only one on FW who isnt into anime? Guess im too american !
I'm pretending to not be into it. I figure if I let myself watch it, I'll turn into one of those hideous otakus with no girlfriend and a thousand plastic anime figures.
I'm only watching animé to aide in my relearning of Japanese culture & language; therefore I can be better prepared for when the 日本人 take over corporate America; hence I will rise the ladder faster to rule the world.

Thanks for calling my life dull... ::)
i just dont like the art style, and, dare I say, immaturity of it. At least from what ive seen. I was reading somewhere that thats just the culture. Is this true or i making an ass of myself? If so, it would explain a webpage i saw, i believe linked in here. It showed that the japanese box art for kirby games had him all innocent looking and, well, kirby. The american box art had him frowning, and more serious. I dunno, ill just stick to my old cartoon reruns.
What anime concerns, there must be some immaturity involved, it's like the hippies slogan that stated "don't trust anyone over 40", meaning that only young people are open to new things, new ideas, breaking the barriers and such... it's the culture of young people.
And by dull I meant people not appreciating art in any way (not just anime)... just to cheer you up a bit :)
Yeah, i love art just not anime. Not my thing. I do really like art in games thought. Have you seen eduardo the samurai toaster on wiiware? Thats a work of art!
Something tells me you haven't watched a good anime yet. ;)
Or, hey, maybe he doesn't like anime?
Come on, that's not possible. Everybody has to like what I like. ;)
I still suggest to everybody to watch some Ghibli movies like Totoro, Castle of Cagliostro (Lupin), Spirited Away, etc.
If you think animé is immature, watch Grave of the Fireflies.
Now there's a classic. I even had to go out and buy the candy tin.
GotF is a little hard on first-timer, I would start with something like Mononoke, Spirited Away, Lupin, Girl who leapt through time or even Animatrix. Or series like Lain, Suzumyia Haruhi,... god! there are so many good titles! It depends what do you prefer in movies- sci-fi, romance, horror, history,...pick one!
(Totoro could be a little childish for a first-timer too...I think it's not a good start)
If you are going to be anime-fan, I think it must hit you like it hit me when I first saw Princess Mononoke.
AND I almost forgot - original language is also the key to become an anime fan. I personally hate english dubbed anime, slovak or czech is also horrid, german was so-so,(haven't seen polish so far), and hungarian is awful. In almost every language, beside original Japanese, every anime seems immature to me.
By the way, has anyone seen Summer Wars so far? Is it good? I have in at home, but no time to watch ;(

I'm not trying to convert anyone - I just want people to appreciate a style in culture.
I myself am not an animé "fan" outside of Studio Ghibli & the such.
And let's face it - the term
animé is rather vague - moreso than our
cartoons &
animated movies, because in the Western world, they are generally geared toward children, while animé is for all audiences depending on the content.
Yeah, you're probably right, sometimes I try to convert people onto something I consider worth. Sorry petik1

edit:
Wait, do you mean why some people go nuts over it?
Well, here's a violent excerpt from Encyclopedia Dramatica:
QuoteThe Wapanese (親日派, ヰアブ, also referred to as "Japanophiles," "weeaboo," or "fucking idiots,") are, much like wiggers, painfully clueless honkies trying to fill a perceived cultural void by pretending not to be white -- in this case, by humping the giant Godzilla leg of the Land of the Rising Sun in hopes of being assimilated into its culture. They also worship Ayumi Hamasaki and other famous J-pop artists, along with pocky. So badly do the Wapanese wish this that they often dedicate entire afternoons to memorizing up to five common phrases in Japanese, though later misusing them at the food court or at animu conventions. This, of course, only serves to further illustrate what flesh-bags of fail these basement dwellers really are.
And here's a more censored version (http://whatport80.com/Weeaboo)
Now of course, your average Anime watcher is just there to enjoy it, but some people (described above) truly are crazy about these animations which is the single biggest reason I try to stay away from it.
Okay.
GET = LIKE.
I don't LIKE it at all.

Spirited Away kind of creeped me out.
I mean, 3 giant ugly heads stacked together will morph into a giant baby, then a big ugly woman comes to give it candy, all while a spider guy helps out a small girl. :o
Holy crap. I actually remember watching spirited away back when i was like 5! I only have faint memories of the spirit wearing a mask, the man with a bunch of arms who somewhat reminds me of doctor robotnik, and that lady with a giant head. So many creepy memories all brought up again. Thanks guys ::)

I really started watching anime while I was in college. I forget what prompted it, but I watched tons of fan-subbed stuff for like 2 years. Mostly watched love-polygon (like a love triangle, but more complicated), harem (nerdy kid somehow ends up with multiple suitors), and ecchi stuff (pervy but not hentai -- think American Pie only anime), with the occasional slapstick comedy and psychological sci-fi series.
I got bored of it after a while because most anime is just variations on the same themes. It's original at first because the themes tend to be different from the themes used in US cartoons and sitcoms, but once you watch enough they start to get just as boring as US TV.
The ecchi stuff got way too pervy to the point where it's just nothing but panty shots all over the place anymore. A scene with a nerdy kid trying to sneak glances is entertaining because that's what guys tend to do in general (although largely exaggerated) -- it's relatable. But when it's panty shots in the middle of scenes for no general reason, it's just creepy voyeurism.
The harem and love-polygon stuff got increasingly ecchi. The harem stuff seems to have gone into various one-upping series. Mahou Sensei Negima! had a teacher with like 30 students going after him! There's the occasional series that throws in a weird twist (like Midor no Hibi, where the one girl somehow becomes the guy's hand!) and manages to keep things interesting, but I'm generally too busy or lazy nowadays to seek them out as they get released.
The sci-fi and psychological stuff was a fun intellectual exercise for a while, but it got to a point where I knew up-front that the series' were never going to make sense and not really ever go anywhere. There's plenty of good non-psychological sci-fi stuff, but I imagine they all get kind of generic after a while, as well.
I liked slapstick stuff a lot because it was just so Japanese. Some fansub groups are very good about including notes on-screen in order to explain cultural jokes. So, in a way, they're funny as well as educational. Never really got sick of these for a particular reason, I guess I just stopped looking for them.
I still watch the occasional series, but at much slower paces. Been watching K-On! on my occasional off-weekends (which I guess is slice-of-life comedy, but also with guitars) and trying to watch a couple episodes of Ergo Proxy (sci fi) in the evenings (I have the DVDs, so watching the *gasp* dub makes it a lot easier to enjoy).
Anyway, that's my anime story. Not sure why I bothered to type it all up (just taking mental stock for myself, I guess) ;D

Finished watching Ergo Proxy. I thought it was pretty good. Had a kinda confusing plotline, but did a good job (I think) of explaining just about everything by the end.
A lot of people seem to compare it to Evangelion (that is, "it sucks compared to Eva"), but then pretty much any anime that attempts to be the slightest bit philosophical gets compared to Eva. I honestly didn't draw any comparisons whatsoever while watching it. Eva is an anime that's confusing for the sake of being confusing, whereas Ergo Proxy is simply an unconventional (if not pretentious) sci-fi anime.
im gonna finish up ikki tousen: Dragon Destiny tonight and start Great Gaurdians on monday

Dragon Ball Z Kai Part 1 of 7 (Blu-ray Disc)
DBZK is most definite to end with 99 eps, meaning, it'll end with Cell's saga.
Also if you're a newcomer to the Dragon Ball world, check DBZK as it's true to the manga and contains no fillers.
Although I love DBZ much more, the JPN soundtrack is beautiful, the voices, it's a classic.

^ This. I have it on VHS somewhere. Ha ha ha! Hilarious.
Big fan of Space Battleship Yamato/Uchuu Senkan Yamato. I also like the Harlock stuff, as well as Galaxy Express 999 (got the movies on VHS), and an OVA set on DVD. I like Queen Emeraldas too, as how can a Space Blimp NOT be cool? Too bad we never got a second part/volume to it over here. Even as it was, I had to buy bootlegs/imports of half this stuff. Also, the Maetel Legend movie is pretty good. I tend to like the Leiji stuff.
Berserk... there is a reason why I still have this cartoon set.
Trigun... plot gets more serious as the episodes evolve, some comedy, neat premise.
Hokuto no Ken. I'm a sucker for post apocalyptic stuff.
Akira, Vampire Hunter D, and Ghost in the Shell are all good animated films.

I've tried getting into Jojo Bizarre Adventure but I'm really not sure where to start. If any of you know what arc I should start with that would own.
i just finished full metal alchemist:Brotherhood thursday
Finally started watching the English dub of Suzumiya Haruhi. The last time I watched it was when it was airing in Japan, grabbing fansubs the day after. I loved it the first time, especially since they showed the episodes out of order to make it even more confusing. Watching them in the proper order now, and it's still a really good series.
I have got to say that I am completely in love with Urusei Yatsura. I feel like a giant old fart for watching a 30 year old anime, but damn is it well done and so, so funny.

Your not old for watching animations, cartoons, and playing videogames that is tens and thousands of years old. Your old once you start to drink coffee to stay awake ( which destroys your voice along with cigarrettes ), unable or unfit to join the military, and then start buying motorbikes which indicates mid-life crisis, or even make on the clock bowl movements. Even so back when Lum was around, 40+ year old guys was banging her real life counter part, for the price of a new Nintendo system. It is also fiction, so don't think about.
I have been looking at
Reboot music videos ( you can guess my new favorite song for the year )

I like to maintain my high-pitch funny singing soft voice. After drinking coffee for a long time, it is like my throat is dry, or has shrunken down, and begins to sound deeper. It takes me a long time before I can make that wonderful Joker ( 1991 ) laughter again, to the correct pitch. The deep voices stays or becomes deeper over the usage of coffee and other sticky products.
Coffee doesn't trash your voice... it's the high levels of caffeine which aids in dehydration, which will gun you up. Smoking will do a number on your voice though.
Drinking "dark" drinks like coffee is some stupid, misinformed advice that voice instructors tell students.
I am a big fan of Classic late 60s- mid 80s anime. I just began watching Great Mazinger and I love it!!!! You cant beat the classic stuff. In fact, I dont even understand anime these days, its so damn wacky!!!!

I watched the first season of Girls Bravo! in college. It's actually the anime that convinced me to stop watching so much ecchi stuff, because it was so awful.
its probalby not as bad as green green though. i watch ecchis for the comedy that aquaites with them (unless its like ikki tousen or some shit. ikki tousen was really good though....)
Green Green is a drama for boys not Milfs pretending to be twelve with milky breasts. Basically if youj don't like that then you don't liike Tenchi. GG was a nice series, but and but it was cut off short. My favorite characters was the two super freaks ( nerds ) who actually made it with each other. Yes I am a guy and I prefer comics for men. Not that anybody here would care about that, since a majority of people are stuck in family land. To me everything past 1995 is when things started to bomb, hard. I have been checking out what I missed before I hit the sack, rather then the latest or greatest......... Some good stuff out their but instead I prefer that.
im not saying GreenGreen is bad im saying its not that appropriate

Pardon my last post i was tired when i did it so i wasnt thinking. What i am trying to say is that GG had a good storyline its just the content was a bit too much in terms of ecchi.
i am sory for getting this topic so off track
Since that is my proffession let me explain. In the world of comics you have men and women comics, with the consideration that children are small people. However due to the creation of Indian Jones, ( G rating ) and the 1980's the art slowly shifted from society to childrens book. So now you have geres which are basically still women and men but there is a consideration for family as well. In general something we all could enjoy.
Take Slayers, in the west ( if anybody remember the late night advertisments )
was advertised towards men, but in reality was one big parody, that was meant for girls. Naga was never animated in the series, asides the OVA due to the nature of the character. This is why you only see her in reference. Basically during the early 1990's the Japanimation was taking advantage over the weak strenghts in fiction and our society as a whole.
In the west ( America at least ) we have slowly shifted away from society comics and wented into masked hero's and then furries. The reasons for this is the Christian era ( late 70's ) , Coca-Cola ( commercial 80's ), and Something else I can't remember ( It might have to do with cartoons ). There is also the division of sexploitation ( which is basically society ) into horror, and sci-fi, and the birth of my favorite gere that I invented.
Right now, I am just throwing this out here. People are even dumber, erasist then the way they see things in 1992. They take things too literal. I described the normal housewife, salary man husband relationship and somebody called that slavery. WIth the internet, propaganda, commercialsim, stereotypes, and people reinforcing them, no wonder why somebody would say such a thing.
Here is a good example of why somebody would be compliantive about X material

I don't know how long ago it was, but I can assure you that in modern day, it's not normal for the wife to stay at home and cook/clean while the man goes out and gets a job. Generally both the husband and the wife have jobs (sometimes more than one), and in some cases, so do the kids.

Ugh, second.
I am not going to go into monolauge mode. I am just going to scratch the point, point, point. It is still the norm for women to be at home, while the husband work. Or at least somebody to be at home. Home business, homemaker, home something. It is not normal on the lowest scale possible for two people to go outside day in and day out, for the sake of providing. It would be a nice thing but it is not normal. In most places ( slums, ghetto's , inner cities, and what nots ) people are aspiring towards a goal that could kill them.
Like in that animation "Windaria" the guy became so nuts after being in the city for such a long time, he forgot about his lover, his home, and his people, and blew up the entire city, for monies. That is what you are talking about. People using people until they are not needed. Like Senntient who had one bad lover, and turns into instant femminist, and thus the creation of Princess Sally, the high and mighty tomboyish terrorist. Blowing up the pugly man robotnik and his smithers like assitant. Going wild, like 1969.
Todays world you also have the stay at home husband, and the employee mom. In fact it is more like the girl gets pregnant, and then demands child support, and the fatheris a recovering drug addict.
That is the truth. So when you see an employee mom, she is most likely alone, or the household is unable to afford what they are already using credit on.
About the kids. The family tree is sappose to rise not fall. I tried providing and you know what they did with money, the got the dog neutered with my money. They complain about not having enough money, but the fridge is allways full. Then I tried to buy a computer from my dad, to keep him away from spending money, and he spend five times more on the same damn computer he does not need at all. What I learn is that people old people are crafty as hell. They will allways have money, they are not that stupid.
is this from what i was talking about? im so freaking confused....
No. RegalSin is drifting off into his own little quadrant.
Anyway, I just got the entire series of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I've wanted to watch it for awhile, but actually started just recently. It's pretty sweet so far.

What is your problem with green green. It was about how a girls only school had to share with boys only school, and the lives and events of these people. That is all. Duh all kinds of stuff happens when you put the opposite sexs together. You don't like guys being guys or girls being so dirty minded? Maybe that is it? From a mens perspective, the guys look normal but from a womens perspective we look like a bunch of tenticle sex crazed maniacs.
Was it the scene with the girl who communicates with cactus? The obviously reapetitive bath house scene? The sickle girl who obvious spends her time thinking about guys too much. The scene where they make a big deal where a girl students shitt gets wet. Where they gang up against each other. The sneak into the girls room scene. How they knew each other but love was lost.
????????????
Perfectly normal.
I dont have a problem with it at all (i am in fact QUITE dirty minded) im just saying it had alot of fanservice and perversion if you will. to me thats what makes an anime good, minus the giant fighting robots
I don't know what your definition of FS is, but I think your talking about gift items, and self promotions that belongs to a product.. Various imagry, is also done, in terms of actions or events that would most likely occur. This is mostly the covers of comics, or in the booklet ( where nobody cares to look ).
What are you talking about? When I see that all I see is a bunch of guys and gals
living together. I have exprienced that, it is called puberty, when you discover yourself can do amazing things, and that girls have something amazing about them. Maybe I am too desensitized, to understand what you mean.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7m_OLgHhEY&feature=related
That pretty much sums up, the previous.
I know what its called and you've stated what you see in GG many times, and while i may agree with your opinion im saying that in my personal opinion i think its got a bit too much of ecchi and stuff compared to other animes
Ecchi means dirty minded. GG is not meant to be that on purpose. These are the just the characters playing their normal roles. Like anything else on television ( not cable ) there are standard of limitatations ( like gravity ).
This is why sometimes they split the series, into two differnt series, with mulitple outcomes. One for the new audience ( the people who is new to the something, I mean like kids watching the Krypt Keeper ) and for continuing auidience ( the people who is willing to sit threw a senario of a character eating breakfast, with casual conversation and does nothing else but clean, goes to work, gets into arugmentation, spend money, and even have sexual contact ) Basically a video complitation with extra content, or lost episodes.
Ecchi is with big breasted, law abiding, old used up, continuing people, who will have a moment or two, and maybe, just maybe the motor is able to ram like it should. Not perverted feats ( which has nothing to do with GG ), or new womenly girls, or even the use and abuse of sex within a series.
GG bypasses the above like a tumor, or kidney stone being removed.

anyways, I am a pretty big anime fan. I like alot of anime such as keroro gunso, the melancoly of haruhi suzumiya, clannad, and a few more that im currently watching such as shakugan no shana, lucky star, and higurashi no nako koro ni. And there are alot I also plan on watching.
Anyone saw Arrietty (Kari-gurashi no Arietti - 借りぐらしのアリエッティ) from Ghibli studios? I have it prepared to watch soon and hoping for another pleasant Ghibli experience!
(by the way watch "Ponyo on a clif" (also Ghibli)! It looks childish on first look, but it's great!!!!)
I love the Arrietty movie. My son watches it all the time. :yoshi:
Definitely recommended!
been watching girls bravo season 2
Yu Yu Hakusho - Season One: Disc 3 on Blu-ray
Not really sure if I'll order all sets, I like it, but not completely.
Uff time to dust off this topic...
Any good 2011-2012 (I mean recent) anime recommendations? I would really like to watch something, but if I may be so selfish - I don't like those fighting types like Bleach (or Pokemon or Dragonball, I liked Inuyasha though), nor mecha like Evangelion. Kinda like mysterious (Suzumyia Haruhi, Angel Beats) and real life stuff... Oh and studio Ghibli is the best, but since I've seen Arriety, I don't think there's something new.
technolyze
My stance hasn't changed since I last chimed in on this thread. Never really liked anime, probably never will. I'm just a good ole 'merican.

I can respect that. Animu isn't for everyone. Then again, it isn't even a genre, it just describes a country of origin for animation. I believe that for every person, at least 1 particular animu exists that they would like, if they happened to see it. Unless of course, it's someone who dislikes animation all together.
As for my favorites... Hokuto No Ken. And Samurai Champloo.
I have to say i am a bit of a sailor moon retard! I also like evangelion the old series and the new movies are awesome!! Tekkaman blade is also a favorite. Then theres the old stuff like astroboy and manzinger z which in english was tranzor Z i had on VHS as a kid! I liked dragonball seirieseses and well there is also this http://teamfourstar.com/page-episodes (http://teamfourstar.com/page-episodes) which is so funny
I hate modern anime and Ill stick to the golden era please, thank you. Casshern, Tekkaman, Don Dracula, Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Steel Jeeg, Galaxy Express 999, basically anything 70s and early 80s I dig.
Casshern and Tekkaman... oh yes. Anything by Tatsunoko is gold. Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Karas, and Hurricane Polymar are my personal favorites.
just checked out "Vampaiya" an incredible Japanese half live action/half anime from 1968. Its so cool, apparently its a really rare series, I only have the first 4 episodes from a rare Japanese television broadcast, lots of werewolves in it too.
and this isnt anime but I also received a 2 disc set called "Secrets of Ultraman" a very short lived game show from 1990. Its taped from Japanese TV obviously and it still has the awesome toy, snack, and famicom commercials intact!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to look into Vampaiya, it appears to be the exact type of thing I'd be into.
you'll be hard pressed to come up with any info. I couldnt find shit. I may upload an episode or two to youtube or if you are interested in a DVD-R copy pm me....
Just picked up the Original Tekkaman Series (None of that Blade garbage) complete on remastered DVDs. SO. FUCKING. PSYCHED! I only had a crummy bootleg set before that taken from like Hong Kong VCDs (VCD stands for Video Crap Disc, why do these even exist?! uggggh!)
The original Space Knight Tekkaman, the greatest Tekkaman... on the topic of Tatsunoko, has anyone else seen Golden Warrior Gold Lightan? Out of all their animes which I've seen, it was probably the strangest one. The titular character reminded me so much of Sunshine from Kinnikuman.
And as for Vampaiya, that would be great if you could upload an episode or two to YouTube, I'm sure some interest would be generated over it.

I have a few episodes of Gold Lightan, pretty cool series but usually gets lumped in with the rest of the thousands of generic Giant Robot series....hes a damn lighter! definitely needs to be brought back into the limelight. I actually bought a Lightan chogokin reproduction a few years ago, I just wish it worked as a real lighter.....Also, its a lighter, and was marketed towards young kids....oh Japan!
Ill see what I can do to upload an episode or two of Vampaiya....itll have to be in parts though which is lame cause Im not going to spend money for extra youtube video time.......and Ill probably have to title it something weird so it doesnt get deleted super quick due to copyright, yadda yadda yadda.
So I just picked up a ton of series from my friend
Vampaiya - Complete series
Gold Lightan - Complete
Ogon Batto Complete
+like 14 oldschool tokusatsu programs. All ripped from the official and unholy expensive Japanese DVDs, except Vampaiya, which is digital cable rips.
You guys have it so easy these days. In the 80s and early 90s it was an almost impossible feat to get obscure stuff from Japan for reasonable prices, let alone free... :'(

Oh I lived through those days as well, I remember my super crappy fansub Mazinger Z tapes that were $24.95 each from the local comic shop back around 1992-93, terrible, AWFUL Dragonball Z tapes that were like 10th generation copies of a copy, oh man...memories! 8)
These days are great though cause its actually feasible to obtain complete series in remastered quality for a reasonable price, also really obscure series are now available that Ive wanted to see for 20+ years.
Anyone ever hear of Microid S? just got into it, I sugest you all get in to it as well, a truly unheard of gem!

just finished watching 'Daltanious' as the story goes, when World Events purchased a few rights to dub various Giant Robot anime in North America they specifically asked for "the one with the lion" meaning Daltanious, Toei ended up sending them the GoLion series and World Events ended up preferring that over poor old Daltanious. A simple mix up and the history has since been written. Anyway, this series was intended to be the original Voltron and is one of the better Giant Robot series that hit Japan during the late 70s and early 80s! what do you think if this became Voltron? think it would have become as popular and nostalgic or fall into obscurity like so many other 80s toons?

Tell me about it... I remember making copies on VHS and mailing to everyone in my group. It makes it much easier to go back and watch series that I only partially saw now though!
Wait, does The Last Airbender count? Because I watched it. Every episode of it.
Elfien lied as far as drama goes.
Fun, tacky, action, my pick goes to new cutiey honey
1. Hokuto No Ken
2. Samurai Champloo
3. Bobobo Bo Bo Bobo
4. Crayon Shin Chan
5. Dragon Ball (Original, not Z)
6. Super Mario Bros: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!
7. Kinnikuman
8. Yu Yu Hakusho
9. FLCL
10. Cowboy Bebop
Honorable mentions: Doraemon, Ninja Nonsense: Legend of Shinobu, Papuwa

@Jay-ray
I merged your thread with the old anime topic we had.
I'm still urging everybody to watch Haunted Junction and Kacho Oji. They're not very well known, but very funny!

Kacho Oji is Legend of Black Heaven, right? I actually saw a few episodes of that and liked it a lot. The music was good too.
Probably... The subtitle of the DVD set I have is "Hardrock Save the Space".
The music is of course awesome.
I'm really enjoying Sword Art Online right now. It's really quite good. I've managed to avoid all the spoilers from the light novels the show is based on, so that's a plus, too. It's on Crunchyroll, if anyone's interested in checking it out.
Well, some Animes I enjoy include the following:
The Slayers- THE anime that got me into the medium, the first season in particular made me the up and coming Otaku I am. Lina Inverse is probs my all time favorite anime character ever.
Gurren Lagann- Another awesome one. WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!?! 8)
Full Metal Panic!- A bit more serious then the previous two(well, for seasons 1 and 3, anyway), but still another gem. Kaname and Sousuke (sp?) are a pretty rad couple.
Ah! My Goddess- Both the 90's OVA and the 2005-06 series are very nice, and Belldandy is one of those characters whom you just can't dislike or hate.
Just to name a few. I've seen a few others, but overall I like anime, and I view it with much higher respect than American cartoons geared at adults.
I really like Ah My Goddess/Oh My Goddess, too. The OVA was one of the first romantic-comedy anime I saw, and it's probably the show against which I measure a lot of similar anime. Frankly, I think it's awesome the author is still writing the manga (and that it continues to get an English release!).
:pow: :pow: :pow:
Subscribed to Crunchyroll a while back, so I've been watching anime again.
Watched Genshiken Nidaime first, since I had no idea they did another season of Genshiken. The series follows the goings-on of a college club devoted to otaku activities, called "The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture." This season was an interesting departure from the earlier story arcs since most of the club members are girls instead of guys, and so the conversations were mostly about yaoi instead of yuri. Uncomfortable at times, but interesting and entertaining to see things from a different perspective.
Occasionally watching Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Lovecome o Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru, or My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy. The series is this curious mix of ecchi, slapstick, and absurd. The protagonist will randomly be presented with two absolutely terrible choices, and must choose to act out one of the choices or else feel incredible pain. It's like, instead of a cheesy ecchi anime setup that puts the protagonist into a questionable situation, the series just says, "we're doing this now, go!" Pretty mindless, but I find it fun because it's so ridiculous.
Also watching The World God Only Knows: Goddesses, which is the third season in the series. This is another series that I really like and didn't realize had a third season already. The basic plot is that the protagonist must use his extensive knowledge of dating sims to get girls in his high school to confess to him for a number of metaphysical reasons (the first episode of the first season explains it all very nicely). This season changes the formula up a bit in order to keep things interesting, but still has plenty of gags revolving around applying dating-sim logic to "real" girls.
I can't stand modern Anime, so I caught up on some Geno Cyber. I'd recommend it if you like 80s gore, but not otherwise.
Manga looks good:

You can read it online here:

I can't post a pic of the anime, so Google Image Search it if you wish to get an impression. You can view the whole OVA on YouTube.

Have to say Ranma was my favorite.. Friend brought it over when i was maybe 9 or 10.. thats when i first started to noticed Japan :/
Yeah almost anything by Takahashi Rumiko is classic.
Saw these at the local Goodwill. $0.48 per tape, though, so I didn't pick them up. Also didn't really like DBZ after the Frieza arc ended. Makes a nice mural, though.

Would look nice on the shelf, but VHS... no thanks. :-[
