That's too bad, START and SELECT tends to break first in my experience, despite they being the most seldom used buttons. They are probably less resilient because they are missing button caps.

Yeah I can confirm that the NES d-pad membrane I got from eBay works great in the Hudson controller. The A/B membrane looks like it would be a perfect match to, but as already established the NES Select/Start membrane is different to the Famicom/Hudson one.

Yeah I think Nintendo used the exact same membranes for NES controllers.
But also many 2-button joypads of the time uses very similar membranes and some are supposedly fully compatible (like Hudson's Joycard). Even Sega's joypads seems to use the same or a very similar size.
Nintendo invented the joypad and dominated the market with it, so I guess it makes sense that everyone copied their design.

Oh the whole game is there indeed, complete with all items! The illustrations are not in color but that's normal for FDS fold-outs.

Maybe they finally decided the game is too confusing without a map and started to include it with later disk writer versions or something. ;D It might have helped preventing people from giving up on the game and overwriting the disk with something else too.

Nice find and thanks for sharing!

Bumping a decade-old thread because I just learned to my surprise that the instructions that come with the disk-writer version of Metroid, as well as having all the cool enemy art that's in other versions of the manual, also has a FULL detailed map of the game (not the little outlines-of-the-whole-areas map that's in the retail FDS and NES manuals). This changes everything. Well, some things.

As above - today I started playing Metroid FDS. I'd briefly started the NES Classics version on my GBA before, but this is going to be my first proper playthrough, on my recently acquired red & white Famicom and knockoff everdrive.

Quote from: r.cade on September 20, 2025, 05:45:33 amSurprisingly, they all seem to be the same design. I've used the ones you can get now in the kits for all sorts of 3rd party controllers (I bought a large lot of broken ones) and they all fit fine.

As you noted, the start/select is a bit different, but easily modified. The buttons and DPAD membranes all seem identical.
That's brilliant, thank you  :bub:
