Quote from: P on May 18, 2025, 02:38:14 pmI see, the original scenario 2 was released as an expansion while the Famicom release was meant to be standalone with the character transferal more of a gimmick that requires a special peripheral.

Oh so the game let you choose another alignment for those? But how did you get a good ninja and evil samurai in the first place?

I guess the starting attributes are simply based on the current attributes when you transfer them rather than some sort of invisible "potential" stat. That sounds like a good reason to use the Turbo File.
Did they become younger too?

Evil samurai by intentionally attacking friendly enemies until my alignment changed (I was preemptively building up evil characters for Llylgamyn) and the good ninja was by using a thief's dagger. It's pretty rare but changes any character into a ninja without resetting their level, having to be evil, etc.

I didn't check but assuming it's like the pc versions when you import, it resets their age as well - you're playing their "descendants."

I do have to say - Llylgamyn feels like a better scenario already. Feels more designed and "professional" if that makes sense. Probably because it was the third release originally, and they'd already had years to learn from the original scenario.

I see, I've been unsuccessful with scraping but my case was maybe a really bad one because part of the metal flap for the battery broke off as I scrubbed it.

I guess Excitebike doesn't have a load-test function, that's too bad.

Do you have Family BASIC (or a flashcart)? I would try saving a small program with that first as it has the "LOAD?" command which tests if it can read the tape without actually loading anything to RAM. That way you can SAVE and LOAD? then if it doesn't work try saving again at another volume level and use LOAD? again. It can be really finicky, but once you find a method that works reliably, try that with Excitebike.

I think that all of Nintendo's games that supports the tape drive uses more or less the same code for saving/loading as Family BASIC does, so if that works Excitebike also probably works.

If your tape recorder has a speed-adjustment knob I guess you may want to center it to normal to get the right playback frequency.

I spent all weekend trying to save some custom Excite Bike levels I did to a cassette tape and then successfully load them up at a later time. I am using a generic cassette player that has been hooked up to the Family Basic keyboard and then to a Famicom. I tried this on both a legitimate red / white Japanese Famicom as well as a Micro Genius IQ-501 clone.

I seemingly had no issue with saving the data. I could hear it save and then the screen would default out of the saving mode. When trying to load the tracks though, I was not successful at all. On my most successful attempts, I received a "Loading / N000" message (from my understanding the bottom part shouldn't be all zeroes), and I also received a read error. On my least successful attempts (about 98% of the time), the game just hung at the loading screen. One could hear the game data if removing the jack from the headphones, so I don't think it was recorded improperly. No idea why it isn't loading up though.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? Can anyone help me? I tried reloading at decreased volume increments, but that didn't lead to a success either 😞

I've heard you can use vinegar to neutralize it to prevent it from continuing to eat away on it.

I just scraped and used rubbing alcohol. I should probably go back and do something more "correct" but it's working fine now.

Quote from: P on May 16, 2025, 04:10:24 pmWhich game did you transfer to though? I think the Wizardry II is a high-level scenario and does preserve levels, while III resets them as you play as their descendants. The transfer is mainly so that you can reuse characters you've grown found of.

The Famicom games might not be numbered though and I think Wizardry III came out before II on Famicom, so I'm not sure it works the same way.

Both of the sequels. Knight of Diamonds (scenario 2, but 3 on Famicom) is the one where characters came through untouched (level wise) on computer but I assume since it was rebalanced to start with level one characters on Famicom, they have it import characters the same way as Legacy of Llylgamyn.

Another thing I noticed - while importing into Llylgamyn it forced me to change out of any "illegal" alignments, like my good ninja and evil samurai. Attributes do seem based on the character you imported, my beefcake of a fighter (Conan) had 18's in every single stat and his imported level 1 version had 15s across the board.
