Recently bought a twin 500b to go with my 500r, it was so cheap i couldn't refuse.
Anyhow as per the course the belt was dead, so changed and aligned and it worked for the very first read and then nothing but Error 22... after spending hours trying to adjust the spindle, nothing but 22...so i gave up until tonight. I decided to try my "for the most part" working drive from my 500r and it too gives nothing but error 22 in my 500b. leading me to think the problems lie on the console side and not the drive.

Is there any likely suspects? the power board is different to my 500r if that makes any difference - this one has two extra NEC chips on the back end, the main famicom pcb is slightly different and this unit also has a cable leading to the upper part of the case.

is there anything that could have failed, from the shock of being used for the first time in possibly decades.

I'm at a loss and any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Well there are a lot of things that could be the problem, as you may know from reading this board....
All important screw put in properly?
Disk is standing properly and stable in place?
Disk drive moves all the way back before starting to read?
Cleaned disk head?

Etc.

Error 22 is because of mechanical problems. Don't need to bother with replacing chips.

yes to all apart from i'm not sure what you mean about the "all important screw".

fredJ

I meant "all the important screws".

These are important

These are not so important when testing

But as I said, it is some mechanical thing. Hard to say exactly what it can be, it is like saying "what is wrong with my car engine and help me fix it"... Could be lots of stuff if you are not experienced with how the disk system moves and behaves.

The alignment is off. I was getting Err 22 for hours until I got the alignment closer..Then you will get intermittent Err 27 as you get closer to correct...I need to finish tweaking it today.. Move the allen screw location in only a few degrees change at a time. Small changes make big differences.

Oh now I see you wrote "working drive from my 500r and it too gives nothing but error 22 in my 500b. leading me to think the problems lie on the console side and not the drive."

Well I guess it is some other problem then, and not the drive...

I haven't had that happen so I can't say what it could be

Well, given that in the current state of my drive, if it's level it works fine, and if it's tilted at all it does not, I would say these devices are extremely finicky. It still may be the drive, in my opinion.
