[Should this go in Other Gaming?  I guess it's technically NES but only because it's in English, many of our favourite Famicom games are here!]

Hi, I was able to find a few Club Nintendo UK magazines from back in the 80s / early 90s, and so I wanted to share these here with everyone.

Plan is to photograph to archive them and also make them readable for people to enjoy here at their leisure.  I have 3 magazines and one strategy guide so far.

As I scan mags fully and upload to online albums, I'll update the thread with spoiler tags and all the pages so folks can see what these are like but also actually read them.

So far, I've scanned the TMNT cover and the Strategy Guide.  The photos are good enough to read the text when viewed full size, but these will take a short while to load, don't mind my thumb!

Nice!

I'm surprised they have TMNT (erm...TMHT?) artwork with Mike holding nunchaku.  I thought that was really taboo in the UK at the time (at least in the cartoon).

They were able to show them, but not really show him using them as a weapon.  Having said that, I think that artwork is from the comics maybe (whited eyes) bu yeah, it was a big deal back then, although I think it's really stupid that it was even a thing.  It actually made nunchakus more exotic, and I think Michaelangelo was many of my friend's favourite turtle, maybe boosted by that?

What makes no sense to me was that nunchaku were taboo but a katana was hunky dory.

P

Haha exactly! It's not like nunchaku is a very practical or easy to use weapon (historically speaking it was probably not that popular either). I should know, having learned some of the basics of nunchaku in karate.

But I think Mike used the nunchaku in the cartoons in Sweden, and I believe the Swedish cartoon was based on the UK version (it had cuts and stuff). Or maybe I'm remembering wrong.

A friend's older brother had one as well as Neo-Geo - it didn't take me long to whack myself on the head with it :D

I think it was because after the Bruce Lee 70s and as ninjas became more cool - there were a lot of sales of street weapons like nunchakus and ninja stars so they quickly became illegal and I guess that had a knock-on effect on the show.  Obviously the Ninja part was changed to 'hero' -  but yes swords were fine lol - though I will note that in the show they were mostly used to hit light switches and keep open doors, no one, not even robots got cut in half or sliced from memory.

Shame.  I'd love a Ninja Scroll-style animated Madhouse TMNT film!

My brother made his own nunchaku using the adjustable legs from a set of crutches and some shoelaces ;D

I don't think we ever hurt ourselves with them.

P

I simply whittled a pair of sticks from the forest and connected them with a string as a kid.

Not even cut by swords? I deferentially remember Leo cutting up robots.
