You know, I was playing a whole series of Super Mario Bros. hacks and one called Serius Mario Bros. stuck out for something: almost all of the warp pipes lead somewhere. This had got me thinking:

JUST WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM!?

Why don't three quarters of the warp pipes lead anywhere? I mean why are they there if they dont go anywhere? I know SMB makes less sense than most games period, but really......I don't get it  ;D

I think if most pipes were warp pipes, it would be somewhat frustrating because it would get too complicated to follow with no visual cues to make yourself a mental map.

Since it's a 2d game, we can't really see how deep the pipes go in the direction of your tv (that is, the z-axis).  Some pipes could be shaped like O while others are shaped like () or maybe even |

All of the pipes go somewhere, it's just that Mario is too obese to fit into all of them  ;D

There is actually a circular, wooden block of wood, preventing you from going down such pipes. If you play Adventure Mode on Super Smash Bros. Melee, and you play the Mushroom Kingdom level, stand on one of the pipes, and adjust the camera so that it focuses down the pipe, and you will see that it is blocked by wood. That is the official answer!

Kind of like the manholes on the streets ::).

There are tanukis and raccons living inside the pipes, so you better not go down there. They are ferocious. :D
