A few months back I became aware of a homebrew game that really resonated with me. A man named Edward Thompson had designed and developed the game during his senior year of high school. He had a free block of time in his schedule and was able to get approval from the computer science department to work on creating this game during school.

The game itself was inspired by space shooters of the early eighties, such as Vanguard. While not necessarily impressive from a technological standpoint these days, I really had a lot of fun playing through Infiltration. It's quite a lengthy game, much longer than I had expected. It's well-done too, I don't recall encountering any wonkiness while playing through it.

For me, I really enjoyed playing through this game for a variety of reasons. The game really does feel like it would fit in with other video games from the early eighties, so I really feel as though the developer nailed the aesthetic that he was going for. Furthermore, I find the backstory behind this game to be so wild and awesome.

When I was in high school I developed and maintained a Nintendo website, and I also managed to produce a low-quality PC game my senior year. NES homebrew really wasn't a thing back then, and at my high school in rural America, the technology department was really lacking. This was circa early 2002 - 2004. As such, I really find it quite neat how the developer was allowed to create a Famicom game during school time. Similarly, I really enjoyed seeing his interpretation of how a classic game might play. I believe that the developer did a really good job here capturing the zeitgeist of the early Famicom era with this game.
