I know you can start a new game and just save over previous data, but I'd prefer to erase all the old files if it can be done.
I was able to do this with my Mother cart, but can't find any option to do this in the aforementioned Final Fantasy games.

Although this probably means I can't. I figured I'd ask anyway.

Try turning off the console as it's saving your game.

A more extreme measure would be to open up the cart and take out the battery for a while.

FamicomFreak

I don't recommend this but I once drop the cart from a high distance and all the saved games were gone....I really don't recommend this though.

You could erase it with a copynes. You can also open the cart you can use a 9 volt battery (be careful, it's easy to break the plastic that holds it together). Hold the positive to the positive and the minus to the minus for about 30 seconds (touch under the circuit board where the tabs attached to the battery stick through). That should erase the save games.

133MHz

That sounds dangerous to the SRAM :o
Shorting it would drain the battery pretty quickly, so don't do that.
Desoldering one of the battery contacts is a pain in the ass, but it's the safest option.
I'm inclined for the corrupting option given by UglyJoe.

I tried shutting it off during saving, and either it doesn't work or I'm some variety of moron because the files are still there.
I'm not going to take it apart and mess with the battery because that kind of thing is out of my area of expertise. I know I'd foul it up.

But I appreciate the help nonetheless.
