N64 question

I didn't wanna make a new thread for this, but I had a question about the UltraRacer 64 controller for the N64.  How do I reprogram it?  I tried Googling this, but all I got was the same quote on several different websites and no answers.

WHICH REMINDS ME

I found this weird converter looking thing.

It's about three inches long, and one end plugs into an N64. The other end can have a Playstation controller plugged into it. I dont see contacts in it, and it does nothing when plugged in. Anybody know what this could be?

Hmm..according to this, I can map a button's function by pressing the button that currently does that function, and then pressing the button that I want...

But I don't know which one is already set to "A"...All the others seem to be mapped correctly, except A and B..they're on a throttle kind of thing, and they don't respond at all..they just act as up and down on the control stick.
