I meant home consoles.
I like to glitch old VHS tapes and turn them into visuals for live music events. Check out what I'm working on - www.instagram.com/tylerisneat

Yeah, sorry.  "Home consoles".  According to the Wikipedia entry:

"With dimensions of 14 cm x 14 cm x 3.8 cm (5.5in x 5.5in x 1.5in), the NEC PC Engine holds the record for the world's smallest game console ever made. (Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition (2008))"

And besides, the Gameboy Micro is smaller than a PSP Go.

I have owned a SuperGrafx since its launch, and since then I have always been in love with Hu Cards. I never got a CD system.

So I haven't had any luck finding a Duo R or Duo RX.   But I have found a Duo.  What's the difference between them?

Also, what kind of price should I realistically expect the RX to be?  I did find that one for close to 19800yen, at this cramped expensive shop, but I won't be doing that.  Manuel, I know you got yours super cheap, but if you didn't, what price would you have expected, otherwise?

manuel

I don't know about the differences...

The last time I saw a PC Engine Duo in a store I think it was 7800 Yen. That's console with controllers & hookups (no box). That might be an acceptable price, although I'm sure it can be found for even less.

There's a PC Engine Duo for around 5000yen with the wires and I think one controller at a nearby A-too store.. But I'm not sure if I should hold out for the more ideal RX of which you speak.. I'd certainly like to get a hold of the most reliable all in one machine.  I'm still blown away at how many variations there are.

manuel

I'm not sure if the RX was the best one, I think it was the last one.
For 5000 Yen it's a good deal IMO.

Alright, bought that PC Engine Duo, which came with a controller and the wires, including a massive power adapter for 4900 yen.

Thanks for your advice everyone!   :)

Say, I have a question regarding PC-Engine.

With the Duo, I can play both Card and CD ROM games... but I've also seen a ram card and some other kind of system card.  Are those required to play certain games? Even with the Duo?  I should probably pick those up while I have the chance, eh?   :gamer:

Not sure about the RAM card, but I know that there was a card needed to run the CD peripheral to the core unit. With a duo, this shouldn't matter. I could be wrong.
I only own a PC Engine Core-Grafx (because it's a small console, which is awesome in itself). I've been in the hunt for a duo off and on, but could never swallow the prices when I did see them. One of these days though.  ;D

Dunno if you can do it to the Duo, but the PC Engine and TG16 can be modded to have a region selector switch (making it all region essentially). It requires internal modification of the pin connectors, which is why I haven't done it yet. Might be something to research...then you wouldn't have to limit your selection.

Thanks for the knowledge.  I picked up a CDROM System Card V3.0  just in case, but yeah, it would make sense that a Duo wouldn't need it.

And I'll have to look into fixing it to be region free.  I want to get into meddling with the internals of things, but I'm a total n00b, so it may be a slow process.

Continuing with PC Engine questions. Hope it is okay.

I bought myself a PC Engine CD-Rom2, as "junk". It came with everything needed, including the interface unit and system card, except for the Pc Engine unit itself. I suspect it's because it doesn't work.

I was told I could power it on and listen to CDs on it, but it doesn't spin when i turn it on. So is it broken, or do I need to PC Engine for the CD to spin?

You can use the CD section by itself (meaning out of the interface unit) and use it as a semi-portable CD player. If it doesn't spin up the disc, that means the CD section is busted. What sometimes happens is that one of the gears inside the CD section breaks apart due to age, and there's no way of replacing it short of getting a whole new CD drive.
