I'll just keep this short and to the point. I have just installed ms dos 7.10 on my old computer to use the fdsloadr software, which I obtained here: http://sites.google.com/site/digilogistist/fdsloader. I have it installed on my pc, but when I try to run it, it says "couldn't open file" or something. I've never used ms dos, or for that matter, any cli in my life, so I really don't know what I'm doing. Any help would be appreciated.

Btw, sorry if you consider this off-topic, I'm also new to forums.

Check the .fds image you're using to open the program and make sure it isn't checked read-only or archive. Are you using the correct commands to open it?

How do I check the .fds image? I have no idea if I'm using the right commands. Like I said, this is the first time I've ever used command-line, so I have no idea what I'm doing. It's something like this:
"C:\Program Files\fdsloadr>fdsloadr.com C:\Program Files\fdsloadr>*.fds.
I heard that I also have to rename my .fds files like so "******~1.fds"?

To check the image, right click on it, and select Properties. Make sure Read-only, Archive, etc. are unchecked. However, if the image isn't valid because of the header information, this won't fix it.

DOS uses 8.3 format, meaning any file names longer than 8 characters long should be truncated with ~1 when you enter them in the command line. For example, SuperMarioBros.fds  would be superm~1.fds.

For simplicity sake, just change the file name to 8 characters or less. Once you've browsed to the folder where fdsloadr.com and your image are, type: fdsloadr (image name).fds  then hit enter. A command to open it if the image is named MARIO.FDS would be FDSLOADR MARIO.FDS

I've heard about the header thing. The header has to 16 megabytes right? How do I check that? Pretty much everything else you said I understood. I'll try it out and tell you if it worked.

ericj

It's 16 bytes.

Easiest way to check the file is to try it on an emulator.

Ok. Well I just got it working by doing everything you said! Time to write some fds disks with a little copymaster action! Thanks man, you rule!

Cool. Glad I could help you out.  :)
