Weird cartridges design?

I've saw in the past weird carts that AVGN shown but not a J-Cart, which is this:



Road Rash for SMD has this sort of design too but without the option to plug more controllers.

A friend of mine actually has a micro machine cart that is like that one. I'm not sure if it's the same design but you plug the two extra controllers into the cart itself to enable 4-player mode (which is loads of fun!).

Codemasters made carts like that for some of their Genesis games.

Couldn't you just use DB-9 serial cables to extend them?

I grew up with Megadrive so for me it's amazing to see that this is new to some people.  When N64 came along, with 4 ports on the machine itself, it was a feature in its own for us!

I had a Genesis (US version) and I had never seen anything like this.  I wonder if they did this for the US region too.

I know they had a  multitap but I had never seen such a thing within the actual cartridge.  It'd be a disaster if you had babies or pets walking around in front of the wires.  I can't count the amount of times kids ran tripped over the wires and pulled the console off it's stand.  Would the game come flying out?

Yes, I have one or two somewhere.

Look on the bright side, carts could have this but discs don't.

Most people just play by themselves or with a 2nd player.
