Funny how mosts posts so far mention Pokemon...

GB is my field and I can tell you that that are lots of japanese RPGs for the GBC. Quite a few for the GB too.

When I was a kid I played through Sword of Hope, and I think it killed my interest in RPGs ever since. That said, I did play through it, but you have more time as a kid I suppose. If only they gave me Zelda instead, I might have been a sane and happy person today...

Here are some GB titles only released in Japan

If you want to try something similar to Pokemon but not Pokemon, there was the Medarot series by Imagineer in Japan. Also, Hudson tried its own Robopon series with their funny shaped GB Kiss cartridges. One of them (Star Version) was released in NA.

There would be too many titltes to list for the GBC, but very popular in Japane were the Megami Tensei titles (Last Bible, Devil Children), and the Sakura Wars (Taisen) titles.

Super Chinese Land! Seems there is a compilation for the trilogy. Also, I bought both Sakura Taisen GB games. The latter of the two seems to be rarer than the former. Also, I want to know what other RPGs there is, especially the obscure, like Koto Battle. I can't read Japanese, but as I said...

It's hard to know obscure games, especially games that aren't playable, and I have already mentioned a bunch to keep you going a while. You might as well do a search on gamefaqs for GBC RPGs.

Give Great Greed a try. It has a very umm interesting storyline and the names of the characters are quite funny at the least :)
