I got myself a new famicom and i tried for a few hours to pick up a signal on it using my RF adapter from my NES but being in australia it's a PAL one. Am i wasting my time or could there be another issue?

the PAL RF adapter will work but you need a japanese TV.
Selling  Japanese games in Sweden since 2011 (as "japanspel").

As above.

The Japanese RF signal won't tune in on most Aussie TV's. I'm lucky enough to have an old JVC CRT TV and this does in fact tune in to a Japanese RF signal, but most people aren't so fortunate and have to resort to an AV mod.

So perhaps try a few different TV's if you have more than one, an old CRT will be your best bet. Other than that, make sure you are using the correct power supply.

It probably won't work but you can try every channel. I live in Australia too and sometimes the higher channels like 90-99 get a bit of signal on a PAL tv. But sometimes the music and picture come up on different channels.

I think there may be an issue with the power adapter i got for it as i did eventually get it to work but it only works with certain carts I have a whole bunch of old CRT teev's hanging about and i got a new indoor antennae thingamajiggy which probably helped! (i'm so not technical but i want to learn!) I just got myself an old sega megadrive 2 but i'm starting to think i got ripped off the $20 i paid for it

I tried a few different carts in it and i got either a red or a grey screen on most of the games i tried because they worked on my old one Dragon quest seems to be the only one i can get working at the moment

You probably have dirty carts. Try cleaning them with some isopropyl and a cotton tip. If you don't have any isopropyl use something like Windex.

I will try the isopropyl alcohol i've just gotta find time to do it when my little dude isn't all into everything and when my husband stops wanting to talk about everything! I got a GBA for $3 at a local market and the guy selling it said it did work but it needed a lube job I had to bite my tongue and not laugh at the guy though! I ended up opening it up and cleaning parts of it with the isopropyl alcohol and WOOHOO working order again.

I also ended up using a RF adapter i found for an N64 and took the odd little doodad off the end which i think helped and may even work for the big teev.

Don't use Windex. It contains ammonia in it which is corrosive to copper.

You should also clean the cartridge slot because sometimes it gets dirty oh and if you are having problems with RF try hooking it via VCR this is how you can get it working 100% ( at least on my samsung vcr it worked :) )
I am back everyone :)
