I built a one of a kind stunt race fx cart.  This is a converted winter gold cart.  The lockout chip has been swapped from pal to ntsc.  The maskrom has been desoldered and I soldered up eprom wiring and installed a stunt race fx eprom.  The battery has been relocated to the back of the cart and it saves data fine.  This cart has been overclocked from 21.4 mhz to 30 mhz, any faster than 30 mhz and the game freezes / glitches.  I designed the cartridge label myself and paid someone else to print it out and apply it to the red case.

Here's a playthrough video:

Looks nice production-wise as well as the game play.  It's cool to see these games play the way I am certain they were intended to be run.  I don't know why these mods are available for games like this as well as starfox and yet why did Nintendo fail to produce the carts like this in the first place.  Was it a money issue.  Has the tech become for affordable over the years?  Thought maybe you could shed some light on the issue Drakon.

I never worked for nintendo so beats me!  My guess is that when they released the first version of the superfx chip it was still in beta form and that would be the mario chip.  Robivy64 overclocked a mario chip but he says he could only get it going at like 25 mhz and he needed to install a heatsink for it not to overheat at that speed.  So this explains why these chips went at this speed in the first place the original one couldn't do much better.  The gsu 1 is pretty much just the final version of the mario chip so the gsu 1 isn't a whole lot better.  I've overclocked the gsu 1 and it really wasn't worth it.  I think starfox is the least taxing superfx game out there.  Playing starfox with the overclocked gsu 1 when it had to draw almost nothing the game was nice and smooth but once it had to draw more than a few objects it went back down to original mario chip lag speeds.  If nintendo had set the gsu 1 clock speed higher the framerate wouldn't have been consistent at all.  The gsu 2 didn't show up until 1995 and it only was used in 3 games, and one of those 3 games wasn't even 3d.  The superfx 2 / gsu 2 chip is way ahead of the gsu 1.  Why nintendo didn't set the clock speed higher in the gsu 2 I don't really know.  Maybe they kept the clock speed the same for consistency?  Either way we should be thankful the gsu 2 even exists and is backwards compatible otherwise this mod wouldn't really be worth it.

On a side note the sega virtua processor for the genesis came out in 1994 and it rocks the framerate of the superfx.  It looks like sega did a better job at making a cartridge based 3d chip.

Thankyou.  It's amazing what you can pull off with just microsoft paint and a lot of patience.

why does the label say Wildtrax if the on screen title is Stunt Race FX? I thought it was never released in Japan? really cool, I love seeing mods like this.

It was definitely released in japan it's a japanese game after all.  I preferred the look of the wildtrax logo which is why I went with it.
