I have a couple of old consoles and the cart connectors are really grubby and metal tarnished and the carts don't play or play intermittently.

Anyone have tips to clean them? The best I've tried so far it cut up an old credit card to the right width and wrap a piece of thin fabric around, dip it in some meths or spirit and repeatedly insert it into the connector. It's quite time consuming but eventually works.
Sometimes the fabric catches and tears leaving bits of cotton hooked inside I have to remove with tweezers.

Anyone have a better method?

I do the same method as you with the credit card and fabric (you watched Lukemorse1's video :) ) but to ensure it works like new, you must use a metal file and gently file the inside of the slot. It scrapes away corrosion on the surface of the pins and makes them all shiny again. I've mentioned this tip countless times here on this forum and it always works. You can even wiggle or bend the cartridge while the power is on and it will still work perfectly!

My trick is to take a game cart (preferably not one of your most prized posessions), douse the connector in 99% alcohol with a couple soaking wet q-tips, and repeatedly insert and remove the cart into your Famicom (hold it firmly and move it up and down a few millimeters).

Do this a few times, wait for the alcohol to dry, and then try your carts again. I did this for my Famicom that wouldn't play a single game properly and now it works like new.

If it's pretty bad I use this http://www.amazon.com/DeoxIT%C2%AE-DN5-Mini-Spray-nonflammable-solution/dp/B000RGD9PK/ref=pd_sim_misc_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0E9HRW840PX8EGP55SM5

otherwise 90% alcohol and a toothbrush.
