Let's complain about our jobs

This thread has been created to vent out frustration you had at work today. Say whatever you want, no one's judging you  ;D

Let's start this off with my shitty job: Deli department at Loblaws. I don't even think I need to say anything else.

I was digging trenches in the crawl space under a school today. My back is killing me. Why they got the tallest employees to do that job is beyond me.

At least you don't deal with customers or have to be work with ladies older than 60...  :-*

MaxXimus

That's true. One of the reasons I love my job is I don't have to deal with customers ha-ha. Still though. This crawl space has like a 3 foot clearance at most and there are 1 foot floor joists every 18 inches or so and I am the shortest there standing in at 6'2.

zmaster18

That's friggin hard to maneuver around :0 I'm the same height as you, so I see how that would be like.

What sucks ass about Loblaws is they kinda treat you like a nobody. They keep making me move around departments all the time. I originally was hired for Meat department and I like working there better. The meat department has low standards for cleaning routines and I barely interact with customers. And when I'm hungry, I just eat a Lunchables from the shelf. I guess one perk about working here is stealing food is extremely easy. But all my jobs were like that. This is my 7th job now (I'm only 21) and I've honestly been able to easily take stuff from each job.

Do I feel guilty? No. This kind of work is demeaning and it's not like I'm going to be working here for a long time.

Since I'm getting laid off I have plenty of complaints. But the only one that sticks in my mind right now is that one of the highest-ups came
to the office a couple weeks ago and told us that the future is looking "super exciting".

Sure, it sure feels like it now that I have to prepare to look for a job again, file for unemployment, possibly move out of my apartment to rent a room again and sell some of my game stuff.

MaxXimus

Wow. Talk about a slap in the face for you guys. It sounds like they are trying to break you both down.

When I first started at Loblaws in June, they told me they were desperate for new workers and that I would be getting lots of hours and starting immediately. I didn't get my first shift for 5 weeks. Then I started getting 0 to 8 hours a week for the first 2 months... I had to basically beg the store manager to put me in 2 departments just so I could get 40 hours a week to prevent myself from being homeless.

There was one week where my girlfriend went away for a week and I was home alone. During the same week Loblaws forgot to pay me. I didn't have any food in my apartment except for a few cans of beans and stuff. I starved all week and still kind of starve just to save money. I actually lost about 20 pounds this month (which I think is actually a good thing) but I totally feel weak now. In deli, I take home meats and cheeses so I can provide some good lunches for my girlfriend.

Because of my lack of hours over the summer, I racked up some bank debt. Because of this, I haven't been able to sell Famicom stuff since July. Soon I will get back into selling since I am finally getting 30+ hours a week and I can start buying and selling Famicoms for people. There is more money to be made in selling video games then working my ass off all week in a minimum wage job. This one bitch in the deli actually laughed hard when I said I wanted to be an entrepreneur.  >:(  She said "good luck". She shouldn't be laughing because I sold about CAD$28,000 worth of video games in the last 2 years.

My goal is to work my way back up to where I was and make a living off of my little game shop while self-educating myself in game programming in my spare time. I would like to be an at-home indie developer for my career so I can choose my own schedule and not have to work with assholes. I also want to be fully in control of how much money I make. I hate being dependent on a boss to give me hours.

MaxXimus

$28,000 in profit? Or? That definitely seems worth persueing. I guess I sort of lucked out in my job. I don't make loads, but I make a modest $15.50 an hour. I was thinking of asking for a bit of a raise because except for the child tax my wife collects for our 3 kids, I am the sole provider for my family. Our rent alone is $1,550 a month plus utilities.

Half of it is profit. That's not bad for someone who sells a little on the side. I wish to sell more than that and have new stuff come in weekly. I want to be making like $800 a week. Whenever I come home after work now, I'm too tired to continue my project. I'm halfway done making my first video game in Famicom BASIC. I just want to keep learning for the next year or so and then start working on a totally original game that I could maybe sell in the marketplace. I also only want to sell video game stuff online for 2 years max. It still is a lot of work and the retro video game market is going to change. It will be harder and harder to find retro video games in the future, so I know it won't last forever.

You make a good hourly rate though. Do you enjoy going to work and like your coworkers? I think that is a pretty important factor. My rent in downtown Toronto is $1,500 as well, but I pay half and my girlfriend pays the other half. This is just a 1 bedroom with utilities included and we live in a fairly new building. We plan on moving this summer to a place with better value. I would like to have enough money so that I can get a 2 bedroom apartment. I need a room to use as a studio/office/mancave. The last time I had some video game stuff to sell, I had bought 150 games and 22 consoles and basically had to stack all that shit up to the ceiling. I need more room if I'm going to work from home.

MaxXimus

Holy crap. I knew living in downtown Toronto was expensive but didn't think it was that much. For $1,550 I get an 1,100sq foot house with 3 bedrooms and a finished basement, carpet throughout. Laminate hardwood flooring in the kitchen with stainless steel appliances, etc and a 2 car garage.

In terms of my job, the work is hard, but I do enjoy it and for the most part my coworkers are fine. They change as the jobs change though so there is some variety in who I work with. All the supervisors like having me on their crew because I don't mess around when I work and sort of take on a leadership role at site. I also usually pick up extra shifts when they need someone to come in and take the crap jobs with a grateful smile (like the one I'm working right now in the crawl space)

Uhh... I know. We're both from Ottawa originally and my girlfriend's sister rents a 3 floor house for the same price as us. I wouldn't mind living out in the country either. I would like to have lots of land and since I want to work at home, it doesn't matter where I live.

I'm also that guy who takes any shift that the boss will give me. Sometimes they call me early in the morning to give me a shift and I have to say yes. I only get scheduled 20 hours and I basically have to get called in for the other 20 hours. It's very annoying. Sometimes they don't pay me because of the retarded punch-clock system they have. I have to ask the payroll lady to pay me...  ???  I shouldn't have to ask, it should just be automatic.
I hope that by winter time I will be part time at Loblaws and working on some Famicoms and Disk Systems at home. At least my work is only a 15 minute walk down the street. Loblaws isn't the worst job I had. I'd say it's the 2nd best.

Alright, I'll bite.

I love all of my jobs at work, though my main job is starting to become more and more of a chore.  With the main job, I am tired of the work I do in the morning, but the afternoon stuff I love.  The morning stuff wouldn't be so bad (only 1.5 hours a day), but I always come in so tired.  I am a night owl, and either I am up late for my own reasons, or because of fighting with my girlfriend.  I live about five minutes walking from my work, nothing sucks more than running through the street to your job, 10 minutes before you need to get in, terribly sleep deprived.

The thing that frustrates me though about my main job, is I haven't had a raise in the whole four years I was there.  My colleagues appreciate that I am serious about my work (with my job, usually they switch people like changing underwear), and I am okay with what I do as well.  So to receive no raise, it is a slap in the face to me.  The only reason I stay is because with my job, they also give me a (large) apartment, and I only have to pay utilities.

But the thing that really frustrates me, is that throughout the working week, I work mornings all week, afternoons all week, and evenings four of the five days.  I do this because I have nothing better to do, and I hope to save money next year for a house down payment.  But at the same time, just to work so much, it can get tiring here and there, and you just want a break.  Especially for those sleep-deprived times.

I've done my time at the supermarket so I know how that goes. I can't fathom the mindset it would take to make a lifelong career in any sort of retail.
