Maybe the reflective coating behind the LCD could be peeled off and replaced with something similar, placed a couple millimeters back to make space for a little light diffuser (ever disassembled a laptop screen?) and a row of tiny superbright white LEDs could be placed on the top or bottom row, wired in series and pointing to the diffuser. The edges of it should be covered with black electrician's tape to avoid losing precious light inside the Gameboy (unless its one of those semi-transparent models, in that case it would look awesome ;D). Gameboys step up the ~3V from the batteries to 5V for the electronics and some negative high voltage for the LCD contrast thing, so power shouldn't be a problem, but battery consumption would be. If you check, a Gameboy Light uses AA batteries while the other Gameboys use AAA's. I should stop drooling now  ::)
