Hey guys, I installed the chip and everything works great! Now I'm able to play PS1 or PS2 games of any region. Can I get some recommendations?

Homebrew all the way! ;D

Yes you have to get the SNES emulator because it plays real good on the PS2 unlike the dreamcast version. http://ps2emu.dcemu.co.uk/snesstation.shtml Check that out

Oh crap, sorry forgot to mention a few things. During the whole PS2/GC/Xbox era, I was mostly a Gamecube player, with PS2 thown in to mix it up a tad. Because of the loadtimes and the more complex controller, I was a little putoff by the PS2 and focused more on the GC. Because of that, with almost every case where there was a multi console release of a game, I got the Gamecube version. This covers Metal of Honors, Call of Duties, Need for Speeds, Retro game collections, etc etc.

Also, I'm not really much into RPGs, espically since I'm still playing Tales of the Abyss. Never been a real Final Fantasy fan.

Also, regarding homebrew:
SNES emulation isn't a real issue for me because

1. I own and still play my real SNES
2. I can easily emulate it on my handhelds (both DS and PSP, though PSP is preferred)
3. The reason I modded my system was so I can play downloaded PS2 games, mostly consisting of Japanese Imports.

With that in mind, I'd still like some suggestions you guys can give.

Then I recommend Captain Tsuabasa because of the original way you play the game. It's a soccer game with a command system that is just so satisfying at least to me it is. It's quite easy to beat if you have seen the anime too because you know what to do if you play in story mode.

Okay, so I'm finally going to get my PS2 fixed and modded next week, so that means potentially new PS2 reviews in the future. Thing is, because I haven't had a working PS2 in QUITE some time, I really have no idea what I should either buy, import or download for it.

What games MUST I have?

General intrists:
-retro compliations
-anime fantasy RPGs
-fighting games
-shooters
-crazy japanese only games
-some PAL exlcusives like Global Defense Force (of the Earth Defense Force series)

what I am NOT interested in:

-multiplatform games. If its on Xbox 1 or Gamecube, chances are I already have it.
-most adventure games. only mention if exceptional.
-ditto for racers
-extremely slow paced RPGs
-RTS
-sports games

Here's what I already have:

GTA III
GTA San Andreas
Final Fantasy X
Katamari Damacy
Tales of the Abyss
Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistance
Megaman Anniversary Collection
Megaman X7 (shudder)
Megaman X8

With games still being made to this day, I feel its time I, as a gamer, got onboard with the PS2 and started to play some of the no doubt endless stream of great games over the years.

Flash1087

Ratchet and Clank, specificially Up Your Arsenal. The first two are more platform-y, whereas Up Your Arsenal has more of a shooter bent (although don't go thinking it's SOCOM), but it's my personal favorite of the series thus far.

-retro compliations

Fatal Fury Battle Archives
Art of Fighting Anthology
SNK Arcade Classics
Capcom Classics Collection
Metal Slug Anthology
Sega Genesis Colection

-shooters

Raiden III
Silpheed: The Lost Planet
R-Type Final

Those are some games that I have in my ps2 collection. I hope to get more shooters in the future! Perhaps I can see what other shooters get recommended in this thread.  :)

I too love the Ratchet & Clank games. They are lots of fun! My favorite is Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction on ps3, but that's a game for a different thread. heh.

Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari.

Metal Gear Solids.

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.

The new Mercenaries Game- Forgot Title.

Edited, I reread the first post.

The only thing I could recommend is having a look at some of the great PSX titles, I don't have much experience when it comes to PS2 titles, but I hope this can help in some way though it's not directly what you asked for. If it isn't then just disregard it.

Graphically they might be a bit dated, but seeing how you are asking for collections and the likes I don't think you would mind too much. Games like Tomba/Tombi 1&2, the first 3 spyro games and the first 3 crash games were truly excellent. (The past PS1-era spyro and crash games just royally suck, in comparison)
Team Buddies, Ape Escape, and Looney Tunes Sheep Raider (aka Sheep, Dog'n'Wolf) are also great games

Seeing how you already have X7 and X8 (though I haven't played those two), you could grab X6 if you don't have it yet.

Shmups-wise I think there was a Strikers 1945 port for PSX, which is my favourite frantic psikyo shmup

Also iirc "Three Wonders" was included in one of the capcom classic compilations, which is one hell of a fun set of games (originally for cps1). If that's not the case, I believe there's a port for it for PSX as well.

Yakuza! Only the most over looked game on the system. It's an action RPG with a tight storyline. It is a must own. They sequel was finally released with little attention by the public rececntly after simmering in Japanese shelves for two years. Buy Yakuza!

Seconded. Yakuza was super underrated. It helps if you were a Shenmue fan.

I have a copy of Shenmue, but I never got into playing it. The game seemed quite boring to me.
