For any of you with a massive pile of Famicom (or NES, etc) games on hand I've found kind of a cool party activity with them.

There is this TV show in Japan called "Otameshika" that is on every week on Monday nights.  Its hosted by two comedians and every week they have these different challenges they put themselves and their guests through.

One version of the show which they put on every couple of months is the Famicom game challenge.  Basically they've got 4 people and about 100 or so Famicom games.  The rule is that they are not allowed to leave this little room they are in until they finish the challenge.

The challenge is that they have to finish level 1 of 10 games - without losing a life - in a row.  They take turns and the games are selected by choosing blindly out of a box.

It sounds easy but usually it takes them 6 or 7 hours to do it.  My wife and I have been trying for months now but have never gotten beyond 5 games in a row before we lose a life.

Its a lot of fun though, especially if you've got 4 or 5 people who are somewhat familiar (though not necessarily skilled) at the games.  You have to choose appropriate games for the activity to work though - RPGs and games without a level 1 aren't any good.  Ideally its the arcade type games (Pacman, Galaga, Excitebike etc) that work best.  You also need enough games to make it interesting (at least 50 good ones would be ideal).

This is the shows website, you can see some pics of them playing (and if you can read Japanese a description):

That's sounds pretty fun. Could be easy depending on which games are "randomly" selected.

Sounds like a Game Centre CX style challenge, why the heck didn't we run our own weekly competitions like this!

Thoughts?!

I'd love to have a little group where we had a challenge like this every week, people could propose a new challenge to replace it etc.

yeah looks like a gamecenter ripoff, still would be funny to do stuff like that

im thinking im doing my own version of game center on youtube for quite a some time now, but the video editing would be a monstrous work...

I didn't know there was a show like that. It's because I usually don't watch TV that late in the evening.
I might have a look when I get the chance.

They still play with the Famicom? Talk about behind with the times.

11:15 on Monday nights, TV Asahi.  They don't do the famicom version every week though, but its usually a decent one to watch even if they are doing something else.

Its a bit like Game Centre but the feel of the show is a bit different.

I've been trying to find a video of it but TV Asahi has apparently had every one of them removed from every blog/youtube I can find.

If you can get a group going, it is definitely a fun thing to do.
