Over the past several months I've been preparing a list of the top 25 essential games for Retrozone's NES Powerpak. Why 25? Seemed like a good number. The only qualification would be that the games must work with the latest powerpak mappers and must not include any commercially available NES games.

After extensive play testing, I feel I've come up with a pretty good list. Check it out! This took a long time to compile.

Let me know what you guys think and feel free to drop any further recommendations. Enjoy!

A good deal of these games seem to be commercially available Famicom games.

And Ganbare Goemon is fun! :D Why isn't the first one on there? :( Did you find it no fun?

Also, SMB256 wasn't as interesting as I thought it'd be - lots of levels are repeats or don't work :'(

By the way, I'm having trouble viewing the page in IE8 (the left half of the article gets cut off. ???

There are a few of those games that were released in Japan such as Final Fantasy III and Ganbare Goemon 2, but I include them on the powerpak due to the strength of the fan translations for them. When significant changes were made to bring the games to a western audience, I feel they are no longer commercially released Famicom games. It's a fine line I tried not to cross. I could have included the translations for Recca or Crisis Force, but all they are are minimal titlescreen translations. Those are still Famicom games and I wanted to avoid them. The point of this list is games you can't play on an NES as they are; even if you were to use an adapter and run the Famicom versions.

As I put in my mini coverage, I think Ganbare Goemon 1 FC is slow, boring and repetitive. The second game is much stronger.

Spacing issues should be fixed now. If anything persists, let me know.

The Powerpak is a programmable flashcart that plays just about every NES game ever made. It's brilliant.
