So everyone/most people will agree this is an amazing game.  But I am curious what everyone thinks of some of the powerups etc after all these years.  We have had more than ample time to play with the game and even its mechanics.  So....

1.  What is the most useful item in the game, may also be your favorite.
2.  If you have a favorite Item which is it?
3. What is the most worthless item in the game that if you get you basically just use it to get it out of your inventory space.
4.  If you could change just ONE thing about the game what would it be.  Even if it were not possible because of system limitations etc.

GO!

Me personally:

1. I think that the most useful is the Leaf.
2. My favorite is a tie between the Tanooki Suit and the Hammer Bros suit.  (I get that the Tanooki suit is like the leaf, I never use the statue power but I just like it.)  Maybe because these are two of the rarest items/ you get them so late in the game.
3. I hate the fuckin' jukebox/music box.  And the cloud is pretty useless to me as well.
4. I wish there was no limit on the number of items you could hold in your inventory.  nothing is worse than not keeping track and having your last item be like a Pwing or a HammerBros suit and losing it to a star or something.

I think this will be a little fun. ;D

1) I'd say the raccoon leaf but that's because the game is designed around it.
2) Hammer Bros. suit even though Mario can't slide while wearing it. Also I can't get enough Kuribo's shoe!
3) Jugem's Cloud (even when I was bad at the game I didn't use them), Music Box (although I like the tune it plays) and the Invincibility Star (it lasts pretty much nothing). Chaining stars in a level OTOH is awesome.
4) I know you said one thing but I can't decide between these two:

  • Allow the levels to be replayable like in Super Mario World. It'd make finding all the secrets way easier and I like to replay the levels I enjoy for various reasons.

  • More Kuribo's Shoe! Can't get enough of it! Either more levels with the shoe or have it as an item.

I love SMB3 because even after all these years and every time I think I've seen everything, there's always something new or interesting to discover or talk about, and since it's so immensely popular it's a good way to strike a conversation and possibly learn something new. :)

1.   Most useful across most scenarios is the Tanuki suit - same as raccoon leaf but with invincible stomping!
1.   Most useful across one scenario is the Frogsuit.  Transforms water levels, but poop on land.
2.   My favourite is the Hammer suit.  Just looks awesome and those Hammers kill EVERYTHING.  I like it because it's rare too.
3.   I think it's the Jukebox, but I think the mushroom is a space clogger too.
4.   Add in a save feature like the SMB3 port on SMB All-Stars, that allows you to revisit levels etc.
4.   I used to do this to get a whole row of Ps, Hammer Suits, Fire Flowers, Tanuki suits, Stars, Frogs and whistles.
5.   Having said that, I think adding Goomba's Shoe as a powerup you can acquire and store would have made sense, but hey.

For the longest time, SMB3 was my favorite game ever. I got it for Christmas, and I played it every day for over 6 months.  I even sat down one Saturday and played through the entire game, start to finish, every stage, without warps, it took me 11 hours or something like that.

The only thing I would have liked for the game to have saving, the game is really too huge for one playthrough. I generally play the SNES All Stars version because of saving, although I would prefer to play it on the NES/Famicom in its original form.

Also, I love stomping butt with Kuribo's shoe as well, it should have been in more than one level!

sconley666

Yeah the shoe is cool as well.  Also someone said something about playing  the game entirely.  NO warps, every stage.  I have been doing that alot lately.  It does take a considerable amount of time.  I heard someone say once that it can be done in 4 hours but I don't know that it would really be possible.  When I finish the game i usually have full inventory of "stuff" and over 50 lives.  At some points I will almost have 99 but I die at somepoint.  I have just started playing SMB3j instead of my familiar SMB3USA and the "powerdown" after getting hit has made the game more enjoyable for me again, but If that was how i started when I was a kid, IDK it may have been too hard.

Also the idea just to be able to replay levels is a really good one.  Never thought of that but seriously the game is huge and I actually just found something the otherday for the first time that made me literally LOL.  On the same token from playing so much of it lately I have seen stuff that I haven't really figured out if it is just "there' or it does something.  Also it is hard for me to break the routine of running a certain pattern through the levels after all these years, breaking that is a good way to find new stuff.  I get a little like that with SMB as well, I can just damn near run nonstop, not warp, and beat the game.  I did a no death run during my days on NA and really impressed myself.  I got something like 850,000 points when i finished the game no warping or dying.  I have started really playing SMB2j and I am getting  ALOT better at that.  even though i had the game on all-stars as a kid i never played it, until it was available for dl on the wii and i sucked at it.  After buying the FDS version I have gotten tons better.  Also figuring out the turtle life trick RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME helped tons.  Saw that one on Game Center CX.

1.  What is the most useful item in the game, may also be your favorite.

Tanooki.  The Jizo statue's invulnerability is quite handy in certain situations and can even be used to kill otherwise invincible opponents.

2.  If you have a favorite Item which is it?

I have been known to stockpile Tanooki through a certain trick/loop hole until my inventory is filled with them.   8)

3. What is the most worthless item in the game that if you get you basically just use it to get it out of your inventory space.

The star.  It is way too short to be of any real use.

4.  If you could change just ONE thing about the game what would it be.  Even if it were not possible because of system limitations etc.

Just a bit more hammerhead, frog, and tanooki suits would have been nice.  Anytime I got a hammerhead suit I was so nervous about loosing the damn thing it took most of the fun out  of having it.  More than one of Kuribo's shoe doesn't even need to be said, does it?   ;)

For the win.  Along those lines, being able to beat levels in multiple ways and unlock hidden levels, ala Super Mario World, would have been great too.

1.  What is the most useful item in the game, may also be your favorite.

Pwing always felt like the most "broken" item in the game. Infinite fly could make a lot of things trivial.

2.  If you have a favorite Item which is it?

Frog Suit.

3. What is the most worthless item in the game that if you get you basically just use it to get it out of your inventory space.

Star is pretty much universally considered this.

4.  If you could change just ONE thing about the game what would it be.  Even if it were not possible because of system limitations etc.

I pondered this for a bit, and really the game is one I can't think about changing much. Storage, I guess.  I feel SMB3 is the definitive 2D Mario game.

as an additionally note: I feel that the Kuribo's shoes love comes mostly from the fact it's rare. As a child, I assume we were all in awe over getting it our first time. Going through all these levels getting the normal powerups. I bet myself felt I had found a secret only I knew or something. The Shoe holds a special place in a lot of hearts because of such.

I just played through SMB 3 a few days ago and I think I'll go ahead with this one...

1: The Raccoon Leaf. It's great since you can use it to gently fall to the next platform and it's great for breaking blocks if you miss grabbing a Koopa shell.

2: See above.
3: The music box, as I usually like to fight the Hammer Bros. for extra items and so I never wind up using them.
4: A save method would definitely be great. Of course it was added for SMAS but having it on the original NES would be nice, whether it be battery backup or a password.

I'm just going to ahead and say that this game bores me.  :P
jump-jump-jump-jump, where's the action?

alright anyways...

p-wing
Quote2.  If you have a favorite Item which is it?

don't know... I have kind of started fancy the mushroom because it just gives you a little jump start for the level...

Quote3. What is the most worthless item in the game that if you get you basically just use it to get it out of your inventory space.

I actually use the star sometimes, I know one level begin with hammers bros.  so it is useful there.
I'll say the jukebox and cloud are useless. The hammer is boring too.

Quote4.  If you could change just ONE thing about the game what would it be.  Even if it were not possible because of system limitations etc.

something to stop me from getting bored... Maybe if they started with the 7:th world and then made world 8 the second, and kept it at that level.

Strangely enough, you aren't the first person who says this about this game.  But I have heard it alot more about SMB1 than 3.  I know its not everyone's bag and that is fine.  I know some people get all pissy anytime someone says anything bad about mario or any game that "they" like.  But I admire that you are willing to say it bores you cause some people will get all shitty about that by itself, YET you have quality input.  (i.e. you weren't a troll, and for that Kudos good sir!) ;)

Hmm, I definitely prefer the fun easy levels like 1-2 and 1-3 than the later harder fiery world 8 levels.  They're like easy listening.

Having said that, I appreciate the game mainly for the engine and level design.
I'm sure you could find a rock solid hack online that would turn it more to what your taste asks for.

Most worthless is the frog suite.  The game gives you so many of them and there's barely any underwater stages.

My favourite item is the tanuki suite.

While I'll echo the P-Wing making just about every level trivial, the Warp Whistle also could be considered a useful item prior to saving on the remakes... you could get back to the world you left off on providing you knew the locations of them.

I always liked the Tanuki suit and the Hammer Bros suits... probably because they were rare. The kuribo shoe was awesome as well... but I wanted to bring up an item that hasn't been discussed yet, the anchor. I always thought it was amazing how much it transformed the scrolling levels... you could take your time and explore the levels fully so the next time you played it, you wouldn't panic as much.

Star or Music box. Reasons for this have already been stated by others.

More levels, more powerups, more story... it's so good I wish there was more.
