C64 Floppy Drive Question

I'm setting up a C64 I've had sitting around in the closet.  I have two floppy drives, a 1541 and a 1541C.  From what I've read, the 1541C is an upgraded version of the 1541.  Assuming both drives work, is there any reason to use the older 1541?  Or is it safe to assume the 1541C is the obvious better choice?

doesnt the 1541C use 3 and quarter floppys as apposed to the 5 in.? also a reason to use the older one is because it looks cooler  :P

No, they're definitely both 5.25" drives.  I would have noticed that :P

The C model is better, but I would keep both as you would be bummed if the C ever died. Back-ups are always a good thing.

While I would normally agree with that, I'm in a situation where I've got more stuff than space.  I don't plan on getting rid of the other one, but if I've got nowhere to put it then it just might come to that.

I know that situation very well...

Still, if I were you I'd keep both and thow something else out when space is an issue.

Yeah, I already threw out a bunch of stuff yesterday.  No gaming stuff yet, just some old PC hardware and a CRT monitor.

I probably will try and hold on to both.  It looks like the 1541C is better, but it's a lot easier to add a parallel port to the 1541.

I also want to add a parallel port to my C64, so I can use it with my pc and use some of the 20+ blank disks I have. I am amazed by how many of the disks that came with my c64 had nothing on them.

I want to put good games on all of them.

How much would you charge to do this mod for me?

I can't do the mod :P

But if all you want to do is write games to the disks then you don't have to mod anything, I think.  See here:

The 1541 and 1541C are the same, the only real difference is that the 1541C is cream-colored compared to the 1541's beige. Commodore put out a smaller version of the 1541 called the 1541-II around 1988, but it's significantly harder to find and uses a non-standard power supply.

Ah, thanks.  I ended up using the 1541C.  Drive is working fine.

However, I seem to be getting no audio output.  I checked the fuse inside of the C64 and it's good.  From what I've read, it's either a dead SID chip or a wonky power adapter.
