Anyone play Skylanders here?

I see the new Giants game is out (coming out?) really soon, and I was thinking about adding it to my Wii U list.  I never played the first game, but I'd love some opinions on it.  I kind of like the mix of collecting and gaming thrown together. 

Is the game itself any fun?  Are the old figures going to be compatible with the new Giants game?  Any really rare figures to be on the lookout for?

I don't play Skylanders, but from what I heard from people that do, the old figures WILL work with the new game.
