Hi Guys. what I am saying here isn't written in stone..this is just an idea.
I thought it would be fun to have a high score challenge running once a month, I got the idea playing Spartan X (aka Kung Fu)

What I am suggesting is from the 1st of every month, we play a game, with the 1st game being Spartan X. Game A Settings, and i'll make a table of top 5 players. We run the challenge until the 20th of the month, whoever is top on the 20th, is the champion of that game.

When posting you score (no picture necessary, but of course pictures are always nice of famicom!) maybe suggest a game that you would like to see featured as next months high score challenge.

After the 20th, we discuss for a few days what game we can agree on for next month, then with the next week spare, we have a chance to purchase this game (if you're not everdrive (I'm not for e.g) and if you have the game, maybe get practise in.

Obviously, the more we do this, the more we will see what people want to have as the high score challenge...

No rules again on games you suggest..if the game can be completed but with a high score, aka SMB, then why not...it also give some of us the chance to maybe buy a new game and get involved too (my collection is small, so this is a good way to get acquainted with games I might not of played in a while, or ever!)

Voting system now in place here http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=12537.0

Please get involved.

I love this idea! There are tons of games that would be perfect for this (especially the more difficult ones). With some of the more rare games like the Disk System version of Mario Bros. or Recca, it might be more difficult to organize.

Suggestions:
1. Spelunker
2. Super Mario Bros. 2 (J)
3. Mario Bros./Kaettekita Mario Bros.
4. Gradius
5. Hoshi no Kirby

I like the idea of this too. I also suggest doing games that are super popular and super cheap. We could do games like Donkey Kong Jr, Mario Bros, Pinball, Twinbee, Goonies, Galaga, etc.

I also suggest having prizes. We need prizes to get more people involved. Maybe even spray-painting a game gold and making a special Famicom World Prize cart would be cool. Maybe even a cash prize would be nice! Everyone playing can pitch in $2 and whoever wins gets all the money.

I like the idea of this, but i wouldn't add monetary prizes, it's too divisional.  I also like the idea of burst gaming.  Let's choose, shorter, harder games that are very score focused.

I would say to add a photograph of proof for any scores though, should be no problem in today's day and age) I notice some people do this weekly on instagram with Caravan shooters.

Some title suggestions:
 -  Spartan X first (was playing this the other day- given it's so hard to finish, a perfect choice!)
 -  Pac Man
 -  Dig Dug
 -  Devil World
 -  Star Soldier
 -  Recca as suggested is a perfect fit as well as Blade Buster, but these mean having an Everdrive, a repro, or plenty of cash!

Or, y'know, an emulator. NES emulators run on toasters nowadays.

The compo itself is a nice idea, but it might be worth giving people a chance to vet games before using them in competition. Many old titles, despite having a score counter, really weren't designed with scoreplay in mind. They're unbalanced or easily broken in that regard. You can max out the counter in Super Mario Bros with the 1-up turtle trick, it's more tedious than it is difficult. You'd need additional rules like "first life only" to make the scoreplay meaningful in that game, and those are impossible to enforce.

I'll add popeye for a game further down the line, and ghegs idea of 1man on games such as SMB is great too.
Also, maybe a round of golf in Mario open golf and post your score of that round and what course we play.

I'm sure we will all play with honesty/integrity anyway :-)

We go Live with Spartan X on the 1st :-)

I vote for 1-man run of Ninja Gaiden, or Castlevania 1. But, I'll try my hand at Spartan X for now, definitely.
So ends another chapter in the glorious legend of the Ninja... Until next time...

1 man run at ninja gaiden...wow...that would be some challenge.
I beat the game years ago and I love the game dearly, but, I found it challenging!
I'd love to have another go at the game as its been a while  :)

It depends on how far you want to take the authenticity I guess, places like Twin Galaxies demand original hardware to rule out savestates/other forms of cheating (using the emulator to slow the game down etc), and maintain separate scoreboards for things like arcade and MAME.  This could arguably exclude playing with repros or pirates, as they could potentially be tampered with to make scoring easier.  I'd like to think the fine citizens of FW would be honest and not quite that anal about it :)

Sounds like a good idea, I look forward to joining in :)

I would prefer original hardware (including clones) and Virtual Console where possible, but would rather put emulators aside for now unless there's big demand for it as save states are so easy.

If the competition's working on an honor system, you might as well allow emulators so that more people can join in. Or you need to ban Everdrives too, since ROMs can be hacked for advantage and the Everdrive itself supports Game Genie codes and save states.

Could be of interest. World Record for Kung Fu (aka Spartan X)
Just over 3 million. (please note that the score rolls over at a million)

Great idea! I haven't played Spartan X for a good while, it will be nice to shake off the cob webs  ;D

I'd love to do a shooter next, like Star Soldier or Hector 87...

DahrenDreamcast

May I ask...without anyone giving away any scores...anyone giving it a bit of practise...

I'll join in but don't expect any killer scores from me :)

For me, this is just a good way for us all to play a game together and talk about it as we go.
