I just pulled the cart up from my basement.  I wasn't sure I had it so I pulled all the purple carts I could find :P

71,840 on my first go.  I haven't played this in years.  Need waaaay more practice.

Well played, Joe. Being able to loop Spartan X is no easy feat, the Magician boss gets pretty tough when you have enemies rushing at you...
So ends another chapter in the glorious legend of the Ninja... Until next time...

Thanks, guys.  There was a week or so in college where Kung-Fu was the only game I would play.  I don't recall why.  But I got pretty good at it.

I've never played it for score before, though, so it's fun figuring out how to progress while getting the most points.  I didn't know that punching was worth more points than kicking, for example.  I still haven't figured out if it's worth it to run down the clock and beat up guys after a boss is cleared, or if the time bonus will end up being more points in the end.

That magician boss, though.  I think everything else in the game is pretty consistent.  If I die anywhere else it is usually my own fault.  I just haven't figured out a reliable method for getting past that guy.

Its the magician boss I fear the most too  :)
After the 1st loop, you get the bad guys coming too....I have a technique in my mind, but, it doesn't always work out!
especially as the game kinda freezes as he transforms....

My best run yet...had X down to one hit away on 5th loop and he pulled out 5 fast jump kicks in a row and knocked me down!
Think I was slightly too close! Ah man!

I never used to do this, but now I figured out..it is actually better to defeat enemies whilst running the clock down rather than get the time bonus...
if I'm at the end of the stage with little health...I don't risk it...

Seems fun! I'll join in too! :D
I played a few early Game Overs before finally completing a whole loop, then I died about halfway through the second loop. Need more practice! :)

The pic is just of the attract screen showing my top score: 206630

There now when I posted a bit worse score maybe more people dare to join in.

BTW I was most successful with the magician when I approached him and ducked any spells he shot at me, and then ducked and machine-gun punched his face. If he shoots a low spell (which he often does when you get that close), chances are that your punches will destroy it. But I guess the timing and distance is very important or maybe just dumb luck.

Well Done P  :)

This is how I approach the magician, when he is coming towards you, I go forward with a jump kick...if you get your timing right, if he throws high, you will connect with projectile, if he goes low, you jump over it...then you low punch his stomach and repeat and adjust depending on oncoming enemies..

However, this isn't perfect because after a few loops, he seems to throw faster and when you jump kick (my way) a low projectile seems to hit me...(Thomas)

What I have done has worked best for me...but..its far from perfect!..

I have a suggestion for next month, but, I would really rather someone else said as I chose the 1st game.
I was going to say, 3 leader-boards, DK/DK Jnr and DKIII, if that would get more people involved, that would be fun.
For the record...I'm pretty rubbish at all 3!

OK gotta try that strategy next time I play. I always had some trouble pulling off jump kicks though. I guess it's timing-sensitive when you should press B. I guess it's an important move to learn because it can defeat many bosses.

The three Donkey Kongs, Ninja Ryuukenden or Castlevania are all fine by me.
I used to be OK at DK1 since I had that for NES as a kid, but I'm quite rusty now. I'm not very good with DK Jr or DK III though. DK with Pie Factory would be cool but that would probably limit how many that can participate since it requires a flashcart solution, repro or Wii/emulator.

I'm pretty good at DK Jr. That was my first NES game I played as a kid, so I know all the tricks ;) Donkey Kong 3 would actually be a great game to do for a future challenge. I also recommend a game like Balloon Fight or Clu Clu Land. I have been playing those games on my 3DS every time I go to the bathroom for the past few weeks ;)

Not sure about the 3-games-at-once thing, but I'm always game for some DK3.

Some title suggestions:
 -  Spartan X first (was playing this the other day- given it's so hard to finish, a perfect choice!)
 -  Pac Man
 -  Dig Dug
 -  Devil World
 -  Star Soldier

I'd love to have an excuse to dig into Star Soldier.  Dig Dug (or Dig Dug II) would be fun to play for points, too.

DahrenDreamcast

Star Soldier is a game that's been mentioned a few times...I'd like to try that too  :)
Ah man...just noticed more posts above...so many great games...looking forward to next months challenge already!

Yeah not three games at once. But all the mentioned games are good IMO. Can't say I'm confident in most of them but I think this is mostly about sharing playing experiences and tricks, and see how high of a score we all can get. :)

Played Spartan X tonight again and tried Dahren's strategy with the magician. Didn't work very well at all. jumping doesn't get me close enough to punch him in the stomach. It only worked once for me and only because I kept hitting his head with my jump kicks so he did the fake-body-replacement-technique and teleporting backwards until he hit the wall and couldn't teleport anymore. My top score this time was only slightly better than yesterday (207360 pts today) so it wasn't worth it taking a photo again.

At least I learned to do proper jump kicks. That problem before was that I always pressed B directly after pressing A. You have to wait until Thomas is fully in the air before pressing B.

DahrenDreamcast

Spartan X is a childhood game for me, I kinda have a natural feel for it and my main attack throughout the whole game Is jump kick rather than punch.
I've been playing it on and off (with other games since the challenge started)

I'm looking forward to a new game as I'm not very good at many games and would like to see my own progression with other peoples scores  :)
I am a master at tetris though  ;D

and I currently don't have a tetris game on famicom, for shame!.....as I was unsure which one to buy...

I consider it a childhood game for me too even though I never owned it (I play it on my Everdrive at the moment). It was a very common game and I borrowed it many times from different friends, and beat it many times. But I don't think I ever tried beating a second loop of the game before.
I've seen speed runners using the jump kick as the most used move in order not to slow down, but it requires very good timing.

I'm OK at Donkey Kong, Pacman, Dig Dug II, Ninja Gaiden, Akumajou Dracula, Tetris and maybe DK III. Bad at Dig Dug, DK Jr (except the G&W version), Clu Clu Land and Balloon Fight. I'm really poor at any scrolling shooter.

I'd like to nominate Xevious, as it's a classic and I played it quite a bit for a shooter (I'm still quite bad though).
Rockman 1 is also fun, but it's scoring system is kind of flawed considering there's no time limit and respwaning enemies, so you could technically max out the score early on by keep defeating respawned enemies.
