Name says it all:  Dianshi Mali, not Dianshi Fortran ;)

What does the F on his hat stand for?

I need evidence. ;)

I'd probably still count it as an unlicensed Mario game though. He even hits a coin block.

Looks like Xiao Mali machines often features Mario, so Mali might not be a pun after all, but having been a reference to Mario all along. Xiao means small btw (Dianshi Mali has no Xiao so that's why it's Big Mario I guess), and Dianshi means television (since it's a videogame version of the machine).

I couldn't actually find the correct rom (the one I'm looking for seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth) but I guarantee you that a somewhat modified version of the background here is in the game. :'( For the record, Bowser's missing in the other version but Mario's still there.

Yoshi's Cookie is also known as Mario 12.
Other "version" of Mario 14 is a Tiny Toon 2 hack.

Also,
Super Bros. Pocker Mali is a hack of Shin Chan: Ora to Poi Poi hack, just to be precise.
Super Mario & Sonik is a Chip & Dale 2 hack.
I don't know if anyone mentioned M.C.Mario being M.C.Kids hack.

And the following two are unconfirmed by me but they do exist,
Mario Bubble is a Bubble Bobble hack.
Mali Boss is a Hammerin' Harry hack.

Hey Cheetahmen, what about that Street Fighter/Mario Fighter 3 pirate where you can actually fight as a stretched Mario? It's hilarious ;D

Here's some info on a bunch of the Mario sprite hacked games.

I have never seen any evidence suggesting that the guy's name was actually Fortran.  I think that rumor started from this:

"Unused tiles within the game reveal the text "Fortran", assumed to be the name of the strange Mario ripoff. Fortran is one of the earliest programming languages that was "portable", or one that could be used on multiple machines."

So a few unused tiles in the game show the text Fortran, which was also a programming language.  The idea that an F on his hat "proves" his name is Fortran is more than dubious, and imo nothing more than internet hogwash.

As P pointed out, just looking at the name and the culture of those Xiao Mali machines says plenty about this game and its characters.  I actually saw a few of those machines a year or so ago, and I thought they were pretty neat, with some Mario music playing and everything.

Yeah I pointed that out too. Nothing is proved, it's just a theory that he was supposed to be named Fortran. It's still an obvious Mario though.

Could you elaborate on that? ???

Well Ossan has Mario's face. As I kid I always thought of player 1 and player 2 in this game as more realistically drawn Mario and Luigi.
It's kind of like Mr EAD in the F-Zero series which is also a reference to Mario in that world.

I found this from a Mario wiki, after doing a quick search (IIRC the Super Mario World guide had some mention of Mario being in Golf):

"In the Western version of the game, the golfer is Mario, though he is not wearing his traditional shirt and overalls.[1] However, he is not the golfer in the Japanese version as the game Captain Rainbow would retcon the golfer's identity as Ossan."

Ugh, retcons.

Okay, reluctantly added. I found the page and it cites Mario Mania Player's Guide without a page number. Any mention in the game's booklet?

Added 3D Hot Rally

What about Hogan's Alley?

fcgamer

I don't think Hogan's Alley ever had Mario in it.

Fan Hacks
Fan hacks

  • Atlantis no Nazo -> Mario's Treasure Hunt

(...)
  • Spy vs Spy -> Spy vs Spy Mario Edition

I redid the pirate part as a table, it was too condensed and unreadable as a list. I chose to put the name of the hack first then the name of the original game. I also separated the numbered hacks to non-numbered to make it readable (since the numbered hacks do not use "Super Mario X" format for their name).
And imo listing fan hacks is a waste of time because there's an infinity and anyone could make one in one hour and suggest it there.

I also fixed some mistakes & added a few ;)

They are lying, Ossan is in all versions of the game, and has Mario's face.
