should i av mod this famicom

Hello everybody,

yesterday i received a package from japan. i bought another famicom   mainly for the famitsu stickers on the controllers. but on arrival i saw that it had a shiny bottom and board revision hvc-cpu-05. if the stuff i read online is correct this should have been a square button famicom. but mine has round buttons.

my question is would it be okay to av mod it like: https://assemblergames.com/threads/guide-av-mod-your-famicom.49263/ this or is this a rare famicom which i shouldn't modify. and why are there round buttons on my system? did someone replace them.

Please do not mode it especially this way that the links show!!!! 
First try RF with shielded coaxial cable, and then if you are not satisfied from the picture and sound quality then consider modding.
If you want AV mod so bad then just use this simple scheme, and do not cut any traces or lift legs, just this scheme! And you will have RF and AV functionality at the same time

hello,

i did try RF but i live in Europe and the picture is really bad and  i don't have sound.

i already did that mod to one of my famicoms and the picture quality is okay for my standards.
its more like: is it okay to mod this version of famicom  and if i mod it should i place that extra audio jack in the back (than i need to file away some of the case) or is there a better solution? which looks nice and tidy

yes probably they where replaced in the nintendo service ,because the square buttons where faulty

I have better solution for you, I am from Europe too, and I using my famicom on RF without problems

But I strongly recommend not to mod this rear famicom! that you have!
open console and you will find on the RF modulator a little holes they are for adjustment the audio frequency, try to rotate it slowly with tinny screwdriver so you will get sound without buzzing

i am very interested in your RF adjustment but i have a question and a weird problem.
can you also adjust the picture?
and the weird thing: when i turn on my famicom with RF i get a fm radio station trough my tv speakers. so for some reason it picks up a station via the set frequency.

this is normal, because  the radio band in Japan is overlapping with ours here in Europe.

About the picture, you have to fine tune from your TV set !
What is your TV  by the way ? CRT or new LCD, what model?

unfortunately my TV does not have fine tune i think i searched for it and i could not find it. my TV model is a syncmasterb1930HD (samsung) its an LCD

i also think that my version is not so rare i found a similar one on ebay that had the square buttons on player 2 controller for 16$. i think a complete square button is more valuable but im not sure about that

your TV is new there is no way to not have fine tune! just go to the menu and search for all channels, but only analog, and "cable" mode not  "antenna"

I did use that to find the correct channel but it does not have manual adjustment unfortunately. So i cant get it sharp

hi there i see you are from the netherlands to 

i already spotted a set of square button controllers  but im not sure yet if i want to swap them out because its part of this famicoms past. however i am still really tempted to get them.
what would you suggest ? replacing the controllers or keep it like this.

i also have a second revision fami which i did an av mod on. i use that one for playing because rf is almost impossible.

Yeah there's a reason they where changed to a round shape, round buttons don't have any corners that can get stuck.

If there is no option to get a good image and you want it to play then by all means AV mod it. I did a revision 3 board wtih smooth dust flap which is really rare but rf was all janky so it was a nice solution to get to play original 1983 system. I routed the composite out the RF and simply added a Mono RCA jack next to it like the original NES. I removed the channel selector switch and soldered it directly to the RF box so it was nice and solid & only had to run wire to the center pin for the audio and put a 220 uf capacitor in between. I used da bears method from a few years ago but now there's better options that's easier as the one listed as first response to your question. If I mod another I'm going to use that method but still run it out the RF and add the audio jack next to rf where the channel switch use to be.
