Google fucking sucks, so I'm getting 99% GBA games and 1% actual Game Boy games when I look up "Game Boy co-op games."
Do you guys have any recommendations for good co-op fun on the go?
Trackballs make everything WAY more intense than you'd think.

Try this bro, not many results, but it looks accurate:

Gameboy Original: http://www.mobygames.com/attribute/sheet/attributeId,619/p,10/

Gameboy Color: http://www.mobygames.com/attribute/sheet/attributeId,619/p,11/

You might get a few more results from Google if you add "-GBA" on the search term.  It should exclude anything with GBA in the result, keeping Gameboy and Gameboy Color results.

The original Fortress Zone is a co-op game, I just added it to its page and hopefully MobyGames will approve it quickly.

There are plenty of GB.GBC games that also offer 2-player or more Super Game Boy SNES controller support such as:
Wario Blast
Bomberman GB
Street Fighter II
World Jet Heroes II
Battle Arena Toshinden
King of Fighter games
Kettuo Beast Wars
Nekketsu Beach Volleyball
Hexcite The Shapes of Victory (GBC)
Mortal Kombat 4 (GBC)
Jinsei Game
Space Invaders (SGB Arcade Mode)

Retrospectives

Yeah, really I can recommend some of the fighters for the GB. Especially Takara made some very very nice port of SNK games in particular, that really pushing hardware limits. Sure, is not co op, but really fun way to play on the go.  :D

I wouldn't go as far as to say they pushed the hardware limits, maybe the palette and button limitations of the original Game Boy, but definitely not the Super Game Boy. In fact, 98.9 percent of the Super Game Boy support for games was ridiculously lazy and outright worthless.

As for standard competition Game Boy games, you're looking at more games than I remember for the Super Game Boy.
Faceball 2000 (14 players via link cable! The only game I know that reached this number! Good luck finding 16 people with 16 copies, 16 Game Boys and a myriad of connection issues without link erorr-checking! Hahah)
Tetris
Tetris 2
Tetris Attack
Yoshi
Yoshi's Cookie
Quix
Dr Mario
Tons of games

Retrospectives

In regard of Super Game Boy compatibility of the Takara ports it could be done better but outstanding job on VS fighters like example KOF 96 really pushed the Game Boy hardware limits. Not per se the Super Game Boy limit, but being able play these game back in the day on a simple Game Boy was really amazing.

The Super Game Boy's limit would be similar to the SFC's limit since you can just put in a SFC game in a GB cartridge (like they did with Space Invaders). But yeah, reading the SNES development documents reveals so many things that no games bothered to use. Not only running SFC code.

Retrospectives

Yeah if talking pure SGB features it actually is not even running at correct clock speed (compared to DMG Game Boy), but a little bit faster. In SGB 2 (Blue model JPN only) they fixed it and added link port for example Pokemon game and such. Overall is a thing they could taken much much more advantage of about the SGB/2 hardware and actually do something better since potential was there, but unfortunately rather it was just seen as adapter to play GB games.  :'(

you could do pre-rendered sprites on screen (Donkey Kong Land games) and use programming tricks to take it a step further. Since Takara games do very little in terms of CPU, you can abuse that effect and make it look really good without slowdown. I guess they didn't think of that.
