In the first level, find the first small mushroom, stand on top of it, and crouch down. You'll receive the best sword, shield, helmet, and armor.  ;D

I found that by coincidence when I played it, but for some reason the super sword drains your health.
The guides on the internet don't mention this. Has no one noticed?

When your health is low enough, you will revert back to some kind of shooting weapon.
Also, in many cases one already has collected the armor when reaching the sword.

So the trick isn't that useful. I thought it wasn't a cheat, but more of a fool.
That's why I didn't do it in my video..

You can check another video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI_ohrZZEmE around 01:20.

Today, I found a copy of Contra 「魂斗羅」for a reasonable price.  It was my favorite game on the NES, but I'd never played the Japanese version.  If I'd have known how different it was from the NES version, I'd have bit the bullet and payed the usual going rate!  If there are any NES Contra fans out there that *haven't* tried to Famicom version, I'd highly recommend giving it a whirl!

How did you find it? Every time Contra pops up on here they sell like hotcakes.  :'(

Also, I made it to stage 7 in Mad City (The Adventures of Bayou Billy) yesterday.

Got lucky.  The retro game store, Friends, had a copy in their "daily specials" bin.

Pat and the Nerd are unspeakably jealous of your Mad City proficiency.  :)

I watched that video too - but I think they made the US version much harder for some reason.

Yes I can beat Mad City without dying (if not using light gun mode) but I have never ever beaten the last boss in the NES version. Plus the NES version takes a long time to play because the enemies needs so many kicks and punches before they go down.
Most changes has been documented in the Famicom/NES differences list thread http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=383.0.

Last Famicom game: Bokosuka Wars - I came pretty far then I was ambushed by Ogoreth's army of yellow guys. Almost all soldiers was killed including my heavy knight (my last promoted unit). So I took my chances and fought them with the king side by side with my men... WOW YOU LOOSE!!

Bob-Bob

Mad City is piss-easy compared to The Adventures of Bayou Billy.  :P

However, I beat it today and made a very unusual discovery - after the credits end the game lets you restart from the beginning immediately with your score and items intact. I made it to stage 6 before losing, but along the way I noticed the enemies took more hits to kill and there were more helicopters in the driving stages. Unless it was my imagination, it seems the game has difficulty loops like an arcade game.

If this is indeed the case, then perhaps the US version set the game on the highest difficulty by default? Has this been documented anywhere?  ???

The only cart that's been in my Famicom for the last week or so has been the Asder 20-in-1. I've mostly been playing Bookyman, which I finally beat today. I've been meaning to beat Porter, too.

Oh, and to hell with that suggestion that I tackle Athena! I've played that a few times over the years, and it's garbage. It's just another arcade port screwed up royally by Micronics. That one is possibly a bottom-20 piece of the NES library, and I'm not nearly that masochistic.
Can Nintendo Age Beat Every NES Game in 2015?

Fire emblem. I tried playing it in Japanese using a hiragana and karnataka chart and then translating it through google translate. I think google translate didn't pass Japanese class. I am taking Japanese class in the fall so hopefully I will be able to read this soon.

So I beat Mad City again. Turns out there is an "average" ending as well as the good and bad endings. If you beat each of the three training modes you'll be given life, gas and bullet refills that activate automatically when you run out during the main game. Apparently beating the game with these refills gives you a different ending where you don't see the scene of Billy and Annabelle speaking to one another, the image of the archway during the credits doesn't show them standing under it, and it says THE END on that screen without going to the staff roll. How peculiar.

The endings I've heard about:

Happy ending - Complete the game normally
Bad ending - avoid the girl after last boss
Goofy ending - press UP+SELECT when the girl hugs you.

And then there are two more endings involving the training mode?

Last game I played: My own homebrew attempt at trying to control ROB using UglyJoe's code. Didn't work... I got ROB to make a noise once but I can't repeat it.

Edit: Got it to work thanks to UglyJoe (I had the ROB commands' flashing in reverse order). There's a few more things to fix, but now I could technically make ROB homebrew yay! :D

Still need to buy a hand for ROB...?
Anyways, it will be interesting to see that project. Maybe it could increase the interest of Family Basic. Even if the ROB has so limited movement.

Last game I played, Youkai Club: http://japanspel.blogspot.se/2014/07/youkai-club-famicom.html

I quite like the various Youkai games, some of them are hard to understand though, so I liked your preview - thanks!

I finally got to try Crisis Force, courtesy of gamer888.  ;D

Ye gods, it's probably the coolest shooter I've ever laid eyes on.  :gamer:

Me? I never needed a hand, not for ROB at least. I have all the ROB parts CIB.
UglyJoe shared his ROB Famibe program here on the forum if you search for it. I'm going to release my ROB test program soon too I hope, it just needs a working menu now.
