LOL, I was 0 when the N64 came out XD and nintendodork... youre 14 right, you should be one. the console was released in 1996 -.-

UglyJoe

The year that the N64 came out, I got a 32x from my uncle ;D

I remember because he managed to get an N64 for my cousin, which was quite a feat that Christmas (not unlike finding a Wii for Christmas a couple years ago).

Yeah, but now that I think of it, I didn't get one until I was 3 or 4

That's about the same age I got my N64!  Super Mario 64 was my very first video game.  Nostalgia alert.

Hello all,

I had a quick question....

How can you tell if your expansion pak is official or third-party if it's already in the machine ?

All N64s that come out of the box are first party original "Jumper Paks"  If you got it used, you can just open it up, and look.  The Expansion Paks look different from the factory Jumper Paks.  Official ones also look slightly different than third party ones.  Official ones are always red on top and black everywhere else.  Third party ones can vary.

\/ Thank you, Rob64 for telling me that :)

Random fact: Original paks are also reffered to as jumper paks

I heard that if I pop it out....I'd have to get a jumper pak just so it would turn back on...is this true ?

Rob64

What?

If you mean pop out the expansion pak (granted official like mine is), you should just be able to pop that back in and it'll be fine.

If you have a lot of questions about it, I believe Nintendo had an instruction manual that came with the first party expansion pak, I'll bet you could find it somewhere within the archives of the Nintendo website, or Google it.  But, to answer your question, you need to have some kind of pak in there, so the N64 can operate.  The Jumper/Expansion Pak contains the N64's RAM

Thanks for the info guys

I found this in the Nintendo archives:

Important Expansion Pak Notes:
Once the Expansion Pak is installed, it is normally not necessary to remove it from the control deck. If you do remove the Expansion Pak, you will need to re-insert the Jumper Pak for your system to opera
te.

Who reads the manual anymore, I removed my expansion pak to do the import mod, put it back when I was done and it worked.

Hey Nintendodork, you should check out my recent NES find, you'll be impressed.

Awesome find, I still haven't had a chance to play Battletoads yet.

Anyway, I was thinking about doing that import mod.  I looked at a guide for it, but it seemed to make it overcomplicated.  Couldn't I just do what I did to the SNES?  Open the dust cover, and snip the tabs?

Well, there's two method I know of for the N64:

This method I DO NOT reccomend: You get a flat head screwdriver and a mallet. You gently chip out the tabs and somehow it'll work. However, I heard this can damage the system, and I assume you want to play it after you're done.

This method is safer (but more steps): You'll need a flat key, a 4.5 mm gamebit, a phillips head, and a buzz wheel thingy.

Take jumper pak/expansion pak out with key.
Flip system over and take out the 6 screws one the bottom with the gamebit.
Remove top half and leave it upside down so you don't mess with the flap.
If necessary and if you feel like it, clean the system while it's open.
Use phillips head to unscrew the screws that hold the gray case that would cover the cart slot.
Use some type of buzz wheel or saw or other cutting tool to get rid of tabs.
Put it all back together and voila.

If you have questions, go to youtube and watch"MN12BIRD" do it.

I was dumb High schooler when I got my first imported N64 game, Super Robot Spirits. I melted the back tabs of the import game down to play in my American system. It looks slightly  ugly but it worked, and I could play in other people's systems. I have since bought a game bit and did a proper mod with a rotary tool to cut the tabs on my n64. I also replaced the back of my melted game with a far less cool imported N64 game that I got in an import lot.
